Bulleit Rye, Old Fashioned glass, fill with ice, good measure or two of whiskey, fill glass to the top with water.
One of my go-tos too.

McGregor's wrong, not that I'd say it to his face, but Bourbon ages faster because of the new barrels. That's why they use them, then sell the used barrels for Scotch.

Jack is ok but extremely overrated, IMO. Gentlemen Jack is alright though.

Agreed. Jack is actually considered a "Sour Mash" being outside of KY.

If you are looking for a weeks vacations adventure, take on the "Bourbon Trail" in KY.

Jack Daniels doesn't even claim to be bourbon. It's great for what it is though.
Recently had some Garrison Brothers, a Texas bourbon. I was impressed. Impressed enough to buy a bottle.
I seldom partake while at a restaurant, but when something shows up on a menu that I'd like to try before I drop in excess of $75 on a bottle, I will go for it.

Here are two bottles (I was told) that are not distributed but available only in the distillery. These both happen to be from the Lexington Distillery - Town Branch. They were the first Distillery in KY and just reopened a few years ago. I worked in Lexington for two years and lived about a mile from the Wild Turkey ageing barns. If you recall, the place caught fire and polluted the local streams. EPA gave them a huge ticket. Also here is the link for the Bourbon Trail. Home

Sort of . . .
Jack Daniels meets the US Federal Laws in order for it to be called a bourbon whiskey. Jack Daniel's does the charcoal filtering which is a unique characteristic of the Tennessee Whiskeys. Additionally, historically for something to be Bourbon, it should be made in Bourbon County, Kentucky.

There has always been a little confusion by the general public. Not a deal breaker by any means, just territorial.

I hung on to the 'I only drink bourbon from Kentucky" mantra for a few years until I realized all the good bourbon I was missing out on being that way.
I still consider Kentucky as the gold standard, and anytime I am introducing someone to bourbon, I use exclusively the Kentucky bourbons in my collection.
I wasn't disputing that JD met the legal requirements to be bourbon, just that they don't even call it bourbon themselves.

I heartily agree! I have heard many folks use both terms interchangeably and not give a care. And it's all good until you tell a Kentuckian they can get good bourbon, not made in Kentucky, anywhere. At that point you may be a Hatfield or a McCoy.
I meant no harm, it's a colloquial thing in this day. I understand your original post.

Sounds like a good week to me!

Okay, can someone answer a question about sour mash: basically it's using the same yeast from the last batch as starter, plus adding some of the back-set (the mash or low wines after distilling) back into the fermentor to keep the yeast happy. A lot of old Scotch recipes call for this, as do some of the high-end Japanese whiskeys, but does it have to be primarily a corn mash, as opposed to say barley or rye, to be considered a true sour mash?

Garrison Brothers Distillery - Texas Bourbon Whiskey Their Website is impressive.
Only 10 hours and 43 minutes away! This place looks like a weekend paradise.
Fortunately for me I can run over the state line to MO. and get a bottle of Garrison Brothers Boot Flask. Perfect!

The Hurricane Tough is an awesome gesture of mankind. The 1000 folks lucky enough to be a part of this will have a reminder of Harvey in a unique way as part of a unique group. Hats off to Garrison for the kind gesture of help.:thumbsup:

This will be my first bottle of the 50 state collection. Yep. This might take awhile.
