Boutique basses

I usually regret these interweb battles but...

http://www.fodera.com/Main/NewBornDetails.aspx?FeaturedItemID=45

"looks every bit Fodera but its tone is right out of the 1960's!"

"An all Alder body (including the Tone Block), Indian Rosewood fingerboard and 60's pickup spacing make this the ultimate updated vintage tone machine."

Google is your friend :)

Of course you take it out of context and don't include the rest of the description:

"The woods sound vintage, but the ergonomics and tonal flexibility imparted by the Fodera / Pope preamp (with Mid switch) ensure that this instrument can handle any gig thrown its way -- as can its player!"

Plenty of reasons to not like boutiques. But some of the ones put forth on TB are pretty fallacious.

Wow, so if I buy that bass I can handle any gig! Awesome! I want to spend my money to be a better player too.

Hey, why does this goalpost keep moving?

Don't feel bad, no one can :)

Mostly because wine is not priced by it's taste. Though people who pay a lot for wine like to claim it is.

I always chuckle a little on the inside when I see Fodera or Allevo or other boutiques brag about how their $4000 and up basses can nail the tone of a mass produced budget bass that sold for less than $300.

Wait, isn't the vintage crowd the first to claim that ONLY vintage sounds will work in the mix? Many preamps are capable of a very wide range of tones from vintage to modern. The fact that I can get a vintage tone out of of my boutique as well as other tones isn't a bad thing. Now I know you're going to claim that you'd rather have a bass that has one good sound to a million poorer sounds with the obtuse assumption that having multiple tones means that they're not as good.

Why do you chuckle, are you better than them?

Yes.

Why do you get so angry because I have an opinion? What is this need to get me to agree with you?

Based on just a few posts, I really don't care what you think. We all have opinions, but I don't need to validate my opinion by tearing others down. Need I remind you that folks like you are snobs, yet try to convince yourselves and others that it's the boutique players who are snobs.

I started on a no name bass that I spent $69.00, that was 36 years ago. I have been through more instruments than shoes over the years, buying, selling..trading. I have graced and/or played more brands than I can remember. Within the last couple of years I walked into a store to try an Alembic Mark King..I will tell you with absolute clarity that it is the finest instrument I had ever played. Forget the fact it is a work of art, the tone, playability and able to take any style I threw at it. The price tag, at the time was $11,595. (I did not pay that, there was some negotiating) but In my mind I felt perfectly justified in buying it. I can say my playing improved because the instrument better resonated what I was doing.

If you can afford it and doesn't put you or your's in the poor house, I say "try one then buy one" it will be one of the last instruments you will buy.

I am looking into a Fodera at some point.

Both are snobs:

"I have a sophisticated bass palate (turns up nose) and a portfolio handed down to me by my rich uncle, please peruse my collection of fine Alembic and Fodera basses."

"I don't need no highfalutin custom bass. I'll blow you away on my humble ol' Squier that I got used for fifty bucks."

Nice, wise ass. No, as you are trying to be cutesy, you're very condescending.

You said it was condescending and I was quoting their ad, now you're name calling all because I said "I chuckle". You really may want to look at why you're so angry with my opinion that you would lose control.

Fodera does brag that they can sound like a Fender that cost $300 new. Calling me names doesn't change that.

Wow, so much name calling, you've really lost it :hyper:

I've never tried to call anyone a snob, that's what we call a straw man argument. Yet you've called me and the boutique players snobs. So you've called me a snob twice.

Best post so far in this thread! :)

Being purposely obtuse is not helping your position.

For someone who doesn't care about my opinion you seem to be obsessed with it. :hiding:

No, I just don't have anything better to do at the moment. You seem to think you're the first to have challenged us like this. Not even close and not even remotely as clever.

OK, enough of this playground. Let's just say we all won.

You sound like the guy who gets all competitive, but rushes to claim that it's not a competition the second he feels threatened.
