Broughton Audio Super Thread

I have a question about stacking drives -

I run, now, a Studio Boost and Solarian which both either color or boost the signal respectively. Being both have a level/volume I can get unity gain so I'd say they probably color more than anything. I also have a Sunray, Azure, Locust and now Sunder for drive, I don't really run either at once but that is my options. After all of that I do use a Monocomp to level things out a bit, sometimes, but when engaging different drives at different moments its hard to tell if I'm getting drive from the drive pedal, and drive from raising the input on the Archetype/P15 ect. preamp? I've ran boosts into many clean preamps to make them dirty, but is there a way to tell if I'm over driving my preamp, or is this just something I shouldn't worry about and run with what sounds good. I like to know what's going on sometimes and I really wonder if my end result is something like 75% Sunder and 25% preamp valve drive. Thanks

** maybe I made this overly complicated - I shouldn't be worried about driving other preamps with boost and/or OD pedals correct? for instance, using a SV Boost in front of a Sunray, a Studio Boost in front of a P15, Solarian in front of a SVPCL? using boosts/ODs to push the preamp downstream more, is similar to pushing the preamp itself?? **
What are you trying to gain by doing this???

Seriously though, there are differences to all approaches and the main thing to avoid is unintentional clipping along the way. I like putting my Saturn VI in front of the SV-pre. I feel I get more out of the SVP because I am not running a hot bass into it.

I always have my solarian either first in the dirt chain or last in the dirt chain. I like how it sounds with every pedal I’ve tried in either setup so I haven’t ever tried putting it in the middle of the chain. It just adds magic sauce to everything :roflmao:

Speaking of which, I’m still looking for a solarian to buy for my dad. I haven’t got much to trade other than some non-brotones, but I’ve got $$$$ too

I’ve been noticing more recently as well that the SVP doesn’t like an overly hot signal. I was getting some pumping the other day when using several fuzzes at once

I have my bass (Lakland 44-14) set with a fairly low output and have even been using it in passive mode. So the Saturn probably brings it up to a “normal” active bass volume. But if I change settings I’ll keep your info in the back of my mind.

I have really bad habit of over explaining things.. - it really boils down to this question honestly, can I hurt, any piece of gear for that matter, with a hot signal, where ever it comes from (signal boost, hot bass, OD pedal whatever)??

The only thing I'm trying to "gain" from this, is long lasting gear due to proper use

Excessive gain (too hot of a signal) shouldn't cause any permanent damage, that I'm aware of, other than possible speaker/tweeter damage, if a clipped transient hits them with enough output to damage the speaker.

You can certainly get into situations where too much gain from one device/pedal can cause clipping (will sound like really crappy distortion) on the input of the next device in line, but that will just make it sound like crap, not do any actual long term damage.

I think the worst thing you could do is overload the input on the tube with an extremely hot signal, which should sound nasty enough to warn you long before you get to that point. And I'm not even sure that would kill the tube.

OK, yeah I try to stay away from any solid state clipping aside from the SB and I'm guessing Solarian, from my output, and tube clipping sounds good, I just wanted to make sure nothing was getting damaged by running a hotter than normal output into a preamp/preamp pedal. Thanks!! That being said, Sunder(mid tuned)>Sunray>SB>Solarian>Archetype(deep bass tuned) sounds amazing, I'm just almost positive that hot signal before the pre is helping the Archetype to breakup. Its crazy how much the Studio Boost helps with bringing out definition in dirt pedals, I'm just now hearing that, before it was only for clean "treatment"

Oh hello.

Assuming you’re interested in home playing, or low volume jams, I can highly recommend the Phil Jones Session 77.

Does it have a Effects loop?

I've been considering a change up from my current Ampeg BA-110 for my small on the go/practice combo amp.

It's alright tonewise, nothing spectacular, but I really wish it had an Effects Loop, so I could just run out from a Broughton Pre and right into the power amp/cab.

Come to think of it, might make as much sense to just get a small lightweight Power Amp of some kind, to pair with the SSDI or P-15, and my existing smaller Mesa Boogie Subway 112 cab... Maybe one of the Quilters or a Baby Sumo?

Hmmm...

Anyway, if anyone has any good smallish lightweight combo suggestions with an effects loop, I'm open to suggestions!

How loud do you need it to be? And how much do you want to carry?
I don’t need it to be too loud, I just want it to not take up so much room as my RS212. I never gig, very Seldom ever jam with friends. I really only struggle to play Stevie wonder when I do turn my amp on.

the new Ampegs look neat, but I wonder how much difference there is between those and the other class d combo amps besides looks.
