Tom Richards and Kevin Brubaker personally touch each bass for QC and setup. And I'm sure Donovan does his checks as well. A quality product for a decent price and a whole lot of cats behind it that care about what they do. When you buy a Brute you're coming into the family not just buying a bass. And there are many folks that can and are willing to talk to you.

I picked up my JJX-5 off eBay unseen and unplayed nearly 3 years ago now. I initially had some neck issues, and the stock strings were horrible, IMO. Kevin and Brad were very helpful getting the neck issues (I'd never dealt with a dual-action truss rod before) resolved quickly via PM's and emails. The strings issue . . . just threw on a set of DR's and I was good to go :D.

The support you can get nowadays from other Brute owners on TB is awesome. Much more info and advise, if needed, then when they initially hit the market.

As far as who to buy/order from online (ebay or whatever) . . . One I'd buy from is Donovan at FretSpot. He seems to have built up a good reputation as a seller, and frequently shares his wisdom here in this forum, and throughout TB. Another eBay vendor that I've had luck with was Grand Central Music out of Duluth, MN. I bought my first 5 string from them about 4 years ago, and the setup on it was perfect when it arrived! But, that was 4 years ago so you might want to review their more recent feedback ratings if you want to give them a try.

So no, no problems or reservations in buying sight unseen. My Brute is here to stay!!:bassist:

Thanks for the kudos, my friend! I do this primarily as a labor of love - I love the gear, and really enjoy getting to know other bass players. In fact, many of my customers end up becoming friends, and I try to meet up with them whenever I'm traveling. Just see if anyone from GC or anywhere else does that! :D

Well guys I sent my money off to Donovan today for a Merlot Brute SC-5. Also paid to have a 3 way coil tap installed prior to shipping.

Guys I'm now playing the waiting game so I decided to track my Brute SC-5. so far I know.

China
Ap Intl (NJ)
Fret Spot (Springfield MO)
Dover DE (pickup shipment)
Newark DE -final destination

I plan on tracking the shipment to see how it gets from MO to DE. I wonder how it will go from NJ to MO. I must be bored.

Well boys I'm still very happy with my brute bass's , but after seeing a brubaker NBS 5 on the forums at a unbelievable price I have taken the plunge and am looking forward to playing one of Kevin's hand made creations on a daily basis .

I just picked up this one on the classifieds. Got it yesterday, just in time for a gig last night. Man, it killed! Pickups & electronics were upgraded by Kevin to Barts & he also made a custom yin yang pickguard to go with the markers. I love it!

Welcome to the family Falsey! by the way, that is the best of the modded Brutes ever. It has the Brubaker Custom Bartolini package in it. It is literally almost an NBS-1, and I can vouch that the sound out of your new baby is THE Brubaker sound. Congrats!

yeah the Brutes are a nice intro to the real deal. I hope to get there myself one day. still for a workhorse that you can take anywhere, a tweaked out Brute is just a monster to have. There will be gigs and places you won't want to take the NBS, so don't get rid of the Brute just yet.

Tom were you referencing the Brute 5er with the bartolini soaps and preamp? if so, just by description it is the closest I've seen to the the config of Kevins' custom basses. I wonder what it sounds like live. I think the blurb indicated it WAS a MJX-5.

Yo, Philly,

I was referencing the Ying Yang bass in the posts above. I heard that bass right after Kev put the mods in before it was shipped. Even with the MJX config, it sounded almost identical to my custom when in the second and third toggle switch position. Some slight tonal differences due to the body wood differences and the strings, but this Brute is about as far as you can go before you step up to the Custom, like Johnny bass recently did. You really need to hear the clips of Doug before he had the mods done to the Ying Yang, and then imagine a whole other sonic level!

It is now June 2012, In a few weeks Tom and Kevin will be QCing (is this a word) and setting up the next shipment of Brutes. I 'm happy to say that one of those new Single Cuts is mine. I'm hoping on having a happy and funky 4th of July. Anyone else here getting a new brute?
