Cabinet under powering?

You call up a company and say, "The doods (sic) on the internets say that no 2x10 can take 700 and live." People do that all the time in our shop. "The internet says smoke came out of my amp because the bypass cap tends to go on these amps" Us: Good, send it to the internet for an estimate."

Do you really think a rep for the company is going to say, "Yeah, we high passed at 250hz and for a few milliseconds the power crested at 700 so that's the rating we gave it but it's kind of a BS number that looks good in ad copy."

These numbers games are as old as speakers themselves. The only ratings that matter are the ones where the test conditions are specified and hopefully followed the AES standards so we're not talking about marigolds to describe daisies.

BTW, it's "ciao" but maybe you were being purposefully obtuse.
Maybe? O.K., well maybe. Likely? :roflmao:

Yeah, you're right. No way. That box doesn't exist. 10" Delta Pro LFs don't exist.

But 700 RMS 210s can be built. 800 RMS 210s can be built. Drivers exist. Maybe even higher RMS 210s can be built. But ain't nobody that I know of or have ever heard of that has those kinda 210s in normal production. They'd be prohibitively expensive. Plain/simple.
O.K. Dude, You're right, have a nice day.

? British watts? What the hell is that?!

Well, the CONCEPT is valid.
If you have an underpowered SYSTEM you risk damage to the speakers by running it to the point of BAD distortion when attempting to achieve the volume you need. OR if you have a LARGE inefficient cab that needs a wad of power to really work you can "underpower it" and it will SOUND terrible (though zero risk).
I suspect this are where the myth of underpowering amps comes from.
Also - in sound reinforcement and hifi applications under-powering really is a thing - again, because if your power amp is distorting all night at truly full frequency reproduction you can easily damage speakers rated for considerably higher than what the amp is rated at - because the spikes in frequency are unsmooth (moving the speakers in a way they don't like) and potentially 2 to 3 times the rated RMS power. (so a 100 watt amp could be putting 250-300 watts into a 200 watt speaker - see?).
Again - really does NOT apply to bass reproduction - but probably a source of the mythology.

Uhm, no. You can only overpower. 'Underpowering" is not a thing when talking about speaker or amp limits. Can a system be underpowered for it's required usage? Yes of course. Just like if I try to drive my buick in an F1 race, I'll have no chance of keeping up. But the car will have no problem zipping along at the limits of its own power and speed. It will just be peaking at half the speed of the F1 cars and taking twice as long or more to get around the track each lap. But the engine isn't "underpowering" the wheels, it just doesn't have enough power in general to compete in it's surroundings. Just like if you bring your 100w 1x10 practice amp to play with your thrash metal band against 2 full stacks. Will you blow the speaker and/or amp? Maybe, but it has nothing to do with the relationship of output of the amp vs power rating of the speaker. You could have a 250w rated 10 in your combo powered by 100w and you'll most likely be 100% fine other than not being loud enough. If you have a 150w speaker and blow it, it's not because the amp is 50w less than the speaker, it's because when you crank it and/or crank the bass eq, you are putting way more than the rated 100w, and probably more than the rated 150w of the speaker. So you are still OVERPOWERING. Plain and simple. Tweeters can be blown with too much distortion, but you're still OVERPOWERING them. If someone is too dumb to stay within the limits of the system, then it's user error, not "underpowering".

Ask them about their 10" Delta Pro LF. See what they say.
I had to know, so I looked on their site and couldn't find that driver. There were some 10s rated for 500-600w, but nothing that said "LF". Even if it's the Deltalite series they're only rated at 250w. I, too, am prone to argue when I think I'm 100% right. However, I learned a long time ago to say "I'm willing to be wrong". Dude, be willing to be wrong.

I'm not wrong, Trevor at Avatar Speakers MAY be wrong, that's where I got the info from; You seem to think I make this stuff up on my own just so I can say I'm right, Psssst, Please, Again, I don't build and or design speaker cabs and since I couldn't get a straight answer to the original question from anyone here, I called and asked the one's that DO build cabinets. I THOUGHT It was a simple question for some of you "experts on everything Bass", but instead I get crap about there's no such thing as a 700 watt 2x10 cab, Geeez!! OK, I get it, If you say there's no such cab/speakers, then I guess there isn't o.k. Done! ... and I really don't think you called and spoke with Trevor or anyone else for that matter because of ... pride maybe? G'day mate.

I am sorry if I offended you- that was not my intention. I make the same joke about British ohms.
