Most social study “experiments” are hardly worthy of the term experiment if you know anything about experimental design.

They also get widely misinterpreted when reported by the press. Look at all the fun that came about when the Higgs-Bosun was dubbed “the god particle” by the popular press.

Amongst your adult friends? Sure. I’d agree with that. But in a public place where small children could be present? No way. That should never be OK.

I use profanity with my friends that also use it. No problem. But I will refrain when strangers, kids, or seniors are present. I will even admonish my friends if they do it under those circumstances.

*Whoosh!* That was the sound of the point of my post going right over your head. The discussion was whether or not it makes sense to judge what is reasonable to talk about based on what they allow on Network TV, what is acceptable in one's workplace, and what is acceptable around one's family. My point was that this is probably not the best way to judge what is okay to say on TalkBass, since Network TV allows more than TalkBass does, my workplace allows more than TalkBass does, and my family talks about things worse than what TalkBass allows. None of these 3 scenarios has anything to do with your friends, strangers, other people's kids, or seniors.

When my son was 3-4, when he was really mad, he would make up the most imaginable curses. Not cursing as in swearing. But like old style curses. "I hope your hands get so heavy they break and fall off so you can never pick me up again!!!" It's really amazing that a 3yo could curse more creatively than your average 20-something.

My then three-year old son (now 27) called me a "basswhole" after getting upset about some perceived slight. I could barely keep a straight face.

That is why I stay away from some of the threads that are absolutely run by individuals who are above reproach and treat anyone with a different opinion like dirt. I do like it a lot when moderators shut down mean people. Opinion is one thing. No one owns a thread. Treating people mean on Talkbass is really a thing. Some get away with it continually. I don't get it at all.

I've seen at least one confrontational member has been banned. But I agree with you for the most part. It seems like being a douche is ok as long as you don't use any "bad words" that violate the rules. I don't blame the mods though. They can't see everything and I've never reported anyone and probably never will.

i love swearing. my mother used to tell me that people who swore a lot did so because they were ignorant....worked for me!

i tried swearing on TB = had some $%^&* points deducted. now i don't give a @#$% about it. i just don't $%^&*#%$ do it anymore.
