Can I swear on Talkbass?

I think his point was if you’re swearing an oath then your word and intent are sufficient. Props and similar drama aren’t necessary and are there just for show.

And I’d have to agree with him. “Your word is your bond.” I don’t need anything more from someone than that. You either take the promises you make seriously or you don’t. Putting your hand on something doesn’t change that.

To be pedantic, I don't see swearing mentioned in there, unless the swear is profane in nature. I imagine some acceptable swears in today's society would be:

  • "By Odin's beard!"
  • "I swear to God, our band outnumbered the audience last night!"
  • "DAAAYYYYUUMMMM, that is a tasty burger!"
  • "My favorite song is Hell's Bells"

I see that curse words are not outlawed by this rule, but I believe it would be in poor taste to verbally attack a fellow forum member by saying "Damn you to Hell for not recognizing the inherent superiority of Fender P-Basses!" Such a curse would be a little extreme considering the topics normally covered here.

Most interesting to me is that vulgarity (potty language or sexual euphemisms) is not specifically mentioned, although the banning of such is implied by their examples.

What disturbs me is when a forum is programmed by somebody with a filthy mind. For example, I was on a comic book forum and I was unable to write the real name of Batman's sidekick Robin, because it came out as D*** Grayson. I found that level of censorship to be offensive because at the time our president was George Bush and our VP was Dick Cheney, so I found it odd that a forum would find their very names to be "bad words"!

Couple people criticized Miles on TB and I didn't swear or curse them. I pre-auto-corrected. It was aktually much more fun than swearing. I also know that they was just ig'n'rant in the extreme because you have to research this stuff and what's in the court of public opinion usually has more power than the truth.

What about swearing in languages the mods don't understand? I can swear proficiently in Spanish, Russian, Latvian, French, Japanese and German as well as the vernacular on talkbass. Ooh, Morse code would be another interesting medium in which to swear...of course it would just be easier to swear in comic book language (for words like !@#% and @#^&^%*) or not bother. I gotta say, the worst word I ever saw on here was ********-****-*******. Nearly made my mother disown me when she saw it.

Amongst your adult friends? Sure. I’d agree with that. But in a public place where small children could be present? No way. That should never be OK.

I use profanity with my friends that also use it. No problem. But I will refrain when strangers, kids, or seniors are present. I will even admonish my friends if they do it under those circumstances.

That is why I stay away from some of the threads that are absolutely run by individuals who are above reproach and treat anyone with a different opinion like dirt. I do like it a lot when moderators shut down mean people. Opinion is one thing. No one owns a thread. Treating people mean on Talkbass is really a thing. Some get away with it continually. I don't get it at all.

I feel the same way, but have you ever been within earshot of grade 7 boys when they don't know you are there?
