did anyone see the Special Olympics last month?!! what a great event only to be soured at the end when a guy with a script and a mic asked a contestant (with a script) how he felt about the word "********".
of course the answer was a bunch of contrived BS, that was totally UNNECESSARY, and it F'n RUINED an awesome celebration of sport.

Don't be disingenuous, Clef. Anyone can tell the difference between something that's offensive and something that isn't. Even the anti-PC folks know the difference...they just don't care.
Because it doesn't matter. Jimmy if someone says, see ole 10cc over there he is a "(whatever)" I simply do not care. Wether it be good or bad, positive or negative, inoffensive or offensive. I eat and drink and live everything else is just happening.

It's forcing a belief system on someone who doesn't want it. Plain and simple. Like going door to door and saying believe in MY god or do't go to MY heaven. ..say MY words and be offended by words I say are offensive or be forever called a racist or bigot.

There. theres an answer. and it cuts both ways. Cannot cherry pick. NO bad words are okay or all bad words are okay. Once you start micromanaging everything...you're asking for more trouble than its worth.
You seriously believe that? BWAHAHAHA!

Let's get it straight...as stated before, "freedom of speech" ONLY prevents you from getting arrested for your speech. It does not prevent people from judging your words any way they see fit. If you say something that people interpret as bigoted, then they have every right in the world to call you a bigot and shun you from their presence, and ain't a thing in the world you can do about it except complain.

Actually it's nothing like that whatsoever. This is a public forum. The OP started a thread pertaining to a particular subject and did so without spite or ill intention imo. He's not going to people's homes and shouting at them to stop using particular words because HE finds them offensive. He wanted to start a dialogue about something that can affect other people.

Also, I personally don't believe that it's more trouble than it's worth to be, just in a very general way, respectful and aware of others feelings and concerns . That's not micromanaging it's just being decent.

Exactly, I am not offended by Patti Smith's song Rock N Roll N*****. I am offended when some racist jerk uses the term. I am not offended when I see pictures of old punks in the 70s wearing swastikas because it was a statement. I am offended when I see a neo nazis wearing one.

or careless. Or "complain" about a particular word used on an Internet forum.

And only you can prevent yourself from judging

The op started a thread asking everyone to not use a particular word that's used in an endearing way towards our guitar friends, I consider his intention to control others ill, others may not. Whether or not the word guitard is offensive or not is purely subjective. This thread ain't gonna see another sunup:)

When people use such terms in an effort to offend or belittle others, it says more about them than the ones they refer to.

Theres nothing I can say that can possibly offend anyone who refuses to be offended. It is all up to the reciever to determine the effectiveness of the insult.

So why don't we put all this effort into teaching people how not to be hurt rather than convincing people not to insult others?

It's kind of like thinking that making guns illegal is going to convince a criminal to not use them in their business of breaking the law.

You go right ahead and ignore whatever you want that is your perspective. I will go ahead and voice my opinion. That is the funny thing about the anti-PC crowd their argument is basically saying "stop voicing your opinion"

Well then they aren't guitards. What I find offensive is someone trying to modify my behavior by telling me what I can or cannot say, enough of the pc crap. You are implying that it's used to specifically degrade those who are disabled. A little insensitive to them, sure, while we're at it lets ban the use of the word stupid as it's degrading to anyone with low intelligence. And I find your use of the term douche bag offensive to women as it refers to a necessary hygienic practice.

Those "some folks" you refer to are basstards :)

Gotta' agree about the PC crap these days.
Waayyy too many overly sensitive people populating the planet for me.
Had a neighbor that told me not to say the word "weird" around his kids.

Why? Because his kids were weird?? And they were, just like dad.

OK, I cannot say the word "weird" now. What's next?

Weird Al Yankovic better find another gig.

1) "guitard" implies the word "******". I don't need to explain how offensive that is. Even the term "********" is dated and offensive.

2) the guitarists I work with are talented, considerate professionals and I like them personally

3) "guitard" promotes a separateness, an otherness....an "us vs. them" vibe that just isn't good

It's important to dream big. Keep at it.

So if I'm walking down a city street and hear someone berate a person of color with vile, racists remarks my natural reaction should be to approach the person of color and explain to them all of the ways that THEY shouldn't have a problem with it and how the onus is on THEM to move on and ignore that filth?? With all due respect that is a totally outdated mentality and society has evolved from it. It's 2015 and that stuff doesn't play any more.
