Well - I doubt this very much - especially given the times we are talking about and the fast turn rounds on sessions - but there is a lot more to their styles than just pick vs fingers and I cannot believe that any reasonable bass player wouldn't be able to pick them out easily, in a test where they just used their ears with no preconceptions.

Not really. It was brought up, but it never convinced me. From my experience with recording, and compression & EQ etc - they don't account for the differences. Listening to the WAV of Kaye playing "I Was Made To Love Her", and comparing to the original - I'm not at all conviced that compression & EQ account for it.

And, they *certainly* don't account for the difference in feel.

gbp1, have you read this:

If you have - how can you still claim that Kaye played those lines?

Note the part where he went back to the original multitrack masters, and solo'ed the bass tracks - comparing one of Carol's to one of James'.

Also note the fact that not only the songwriters and producers claim it was Jamerson, but Stevie himself says Jamerson played on "I Was Made To Love Her".

I can't believe the debate is still happening.

What next, is CK gonna claim she played Teen Town? Maybe she'll say she actually played on the Hejira sessions :D

No, this is not a girl, guy thing. I have just listened to Mary Wells doing My Guy and I know this is an Upright bass. . BL (Satie) is quoting Dr. Licks. Original thought is not accepted here in this thread. Every time I say anything I am accused of worshiping Carol or that I am into man bashing or its racial, which is not me or my feelings.
I wish a mod would merge these threads! ..:hmm:

Before I read Slutsky's account, I thought CK was just a confused old lady. Now I think she's a liar, period.

Thanks for bringing this back into discussion, gbp1 (and Garf!). Sunlight is always the best antiseptic. Keep up the good work.

I haven't said or mentioned any of these things which I consider irrelevant - all you need do is listen and let your ears tell you the answer!

What has original thought got to do with it, though - this whole argument was old, several years ago!

I prefer fingerstyle players! ;)

I don't understand all the fuzz over her.

Bad hair day? ;)

There are loads of muscians who do illegal, bad and stupid stuff...

But only one Jamerson - who can't reply now and never got enough credit in his lifetime! :(

But I will listen to some stuff of here..it is always nice to hear new people...
Well...you probably have heard her play before - just don't know it - have you seen the film Bulitt with Steve McQueen, for example.....

I stated to you once before, I have excellent hearing, in fact I own and operate a highly successful commercial recording facility in the SF bay area. I have engineered on several projects for numerous labels over the past 20 years. I currently am signed with Sony, Yet my reputation is not in question here is it.My bass tracks are not being discredited are they.
This is the reason for such a discussion.:D

Im not saying you're lying here but something doesnt make sense to me. You have springfield oregon listed as your location, so its safe to say you reside there now. You're studio is in SF. and since you said you operate it and said you have dsl or 56k service at work its relativly safe to say you actually work there in SF as well. What doesnt make sense to me is that you'd drive aproximatly 542.3 miles, 10 hours 29 minutes to get to work.

Now I'm no authority on who played on what and I don't particularly care either way....

But I do have to wonder if people's loyalties aren't seriously affecting their judgement here. Just because you like someone personally doesn't mean that they are infallible. Try to look at the facts, and forgot how you feel about the person you are defending while doing so.

I've read several things that Carol Kaye has written on TBL that have made me shake my head. I don't doubt her talent, but then I don't believe everything she says either.

From what I've read, I would be inclined to think that Jamerson played on most or all of the tracks in question. As far as the weight of the evidence goes, it strongly supports this claim.
