Bullit - the tune that was used on a car commercial where Steve McQueen is included with new footage?
But there is no confusing their 'signature' sounds - Carol uses a pick and gets a strong attack to the note which is nothing like Jamerson's sound which was very audibly fingerstyle.
That's why these huge debates are so ridiculous!!
Anybody can tell the difference!!
Ahh, she played on Pet Sounds didn't she? I'll have a listen to that tonight. I just wanna hear what her playing does sound like, and where the confusion is. Really, the only way I'm familiar with Jamerson's playing is from those songs that are in question. So, I guess I need to hear the difference myself.

didn't somebody say she played on the theme for the Brady Bunch? I watched that with my kids this morning, you can definitely tell that that is a distinctive style that's different from the Motown groove Jamerson and others had going on...
She is also on the bumper music for the Brady Bunch. (The stuff that gets played in and out of commercial breaks) I was raised on her sound and didn't know it until years later. Great stuff.

Kaye says 40% of motown was recorded in LA so wouldn't this leave room for 60% to have been Jamerson?

I have an interesting story for talk bass. I was contacted by girlbassplayer1 (aka treena who posts regularly on Carols site) asking for proof that Jamerson played the music and I wrote back directing her to several sites on the matter, now I see she is here with statements like:

Girlbassplayer has been spewing this same trash on other bass sites too!!! Ever since the Standing In the Shadows DVD came out it seems the Carol Kaye camp is really trying to discredit the Funk Brothers.......it makes me sick!!!! I once really respected Carol Kaye....it's so sad she has turned into this!

The Music and who made it is very important. No one I know of say "I like that music but I dont care who made it". It is a basis for wealth and prestige and the admiration from millions of fans. Just ask any Greatful Dead fans. Besides if it werent important why is Kaye trying so hard thru you and others to lay claim to this music?

I think you're paranoid. I might also add that on some boards you can get banned for having more than one account.
Mr. Bob Lee (satie) BassLand this doesn't sound like the calm, cool, collective man I was speaking to earlier. This subject is somewhat emotional to those who feel their friend and mentor are being discredited for their work. We both feel passion for our music and history! I feel this matter will never have a conclusive answer, questions will always be asked with each generation of fine musicians who reasearch the FACTS and come to a cross road in Motown.... Detroit and LA is my search, not Kaye and Jamerson. They are the product of each end. They are caught up in the middle of this as much as you or I are.

It is obvious that you are coming from some very different avenues. Which is cool. There has been and always will be this controversy as long as Ms. Kaye continues to bring it up. I don't say that to discredit her or to disbelieve her. It just seems that as long as I can remember Carol Kaye has taken credit for things that others said that she did not play. In her heart I am sure she knows the truth. Babbitt said in the Bass Player article that this is all that really counts.
I still have copies of Carol Kayes bass methods (30 years old) sitting on my shelf. They were the first books I studied from. I have great respect for her.
Jamerson, however was another story altogether. James Jamerson was light years ahead of his time. He revolutionized the instrument. He got absolutely no credit for any of this. Carol Kaye was the most acclaimed bassist of the 60's and 70's. It is a pity if (as posts on this board would indicate) she does not seem to be able to give him the credit that we all do (for at least the songs that he did play on).
One last thing, I truly believe Bob Lee is a sincere in what he offers to the table. I had the opportunity to meet him, speak with him and hang with him and Max Bennet at the NAMM show in January.

Well, maybe, maybe not, depending on what you consider conclusive. Sometimes it's pointless to seek absolute certainty. In those cases, you just go along with where the preponderance of the evidence lies. For me personally, there's VASTLY more compelling evidence in favor of Jamerson's claims *to those particular songs in dispute* than there is to Kaye's. This isn't to put down Kaye's achievements, which are legion, merely to say that I see little or no reason to think they extend to those songs. I don't intend to go over all the evidence all over again. That's been done.
And yeah, it kinda does matter who gets the credit.

If you are referring to my post, I didn't say it didn't matter who got the credit, I said that those who did the song, know, in their hearts, that they did it. Of course it matters. I was just talking about IF people are taking credit for things they didn't do ... that in THEIR hearts they know that they are living a lie

No no Mike, I was referring to a couple of posts from girlbassplayer (whose thread I was quoting) in my post just above, where the implication seemed to be, let's just enjoy the music, who cares who actually did it. I certainly believe in enjoying the music, but I also believe in credit for work done. I wasn't referring to what you said, which I agree with. The posts just crossed in time.
