Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 2!

Ok, so now today I am more leaning towards this type of finish

Only difference would be maple fretboard, probably with white blocks....but not totally sure on that. I figure since I am going with Alder, I wont try and show off the grain that much - I've always wanted a bass like this!

:hyper: Recieved my SB5000 Fretless on Tuesday and it is absolutely un-flippin-believable. I have not been able to put it down. The paint job flawless, the neck is perfect, the tone is incredible (J99's) and the look is such a great take on the classic Fender J. This is easily the nicest bass I have ever owned. :cool:

I know the TB rules, but I left it at the store and will come back for it after work... So pics to follow.

Specs:
Alder body (I believe... As there is no Ash option listed on the tag; and more importantly it sounds like Alder)
Black finish
Rosewood board
All black hardware
Standard electronics package
Abalone dot inlays
White pearl guard (but I think I will replace it with black)

I originally ordered a 4 string, but I couldn't wait until its estimated completion date of 12-22-10, so I canceled that order and bought this 5 string today which was in the store. I've never played a 5 so this is a good a time as any to learn. The only difference between the 4 I ordered and this 5 are the creme pickups. I plan to change these to black pups. Anyone know a place in the Inland empire or surrounding area that can change the pups?

Nice Bass! I live here in the Inland Empire also and the only places I know for repair would be Redlands Guitar shop & Chris (guitar tech) at Guitar Center in Rancho Cucamonga. Ontario music closed earlier this year..that would have been the place to go. Shouldn't be to hard just to swap out some blk J99a's in place of the cream ones though. :D

Hey onetime maybe you should try to see if you can just swap out the covers instead of the entire pickup... Worth a shot, a lot of covers just pop off.

Also, would it bother you guys if your abalone inlays doesn't match your white pearl pickguard? It's kinda getting to me that the abalone has blue/green shades instead of just regular mother or pearl that matches the pickguard... I know it's stupid.

Yeah, swapping covers is no big whoop. I'm sure you could get a pair in black from Carvin and do it yourself. I think at worse you'd have to take out the screws that hold the pickups in, pull off the old cover, then pop on the new cover. No electronic stuff to mess with at all. This is my educated guess.

As for the abalone inlays, nah, it wouldn't bother me at all. But its your bass. If don't care for the look, consider a black pickguard instead?

Since my Koa SB5000 is due in the next week or so and nothing on my bass is going to be black except for the truss rod cover. I wanted to get a truss rod cover that would match..Koa body/headstock w/ Abalone Logo, Birdseye fretboard w/Abalone Dots, Ivory nut, Chrome hardware w/Abalone knobs,creme J99a's & no pickguard.. I couldn't decide on Abalone or Birdseye Maple...so I ordered both and both of them arrived today in the mail :D

Both places did an awesome job and prices were reasonable + they both have the templates on file for future orders now...they will fit on both the SB4000 & SB5000.
Cant wait to see them on my Bass :bassist:

i am sure it's been discussed --- but how is the preamp in comparison to the lb70?? I bought 2 lb70s- and I returned both - even with the pre amp turned all the way down on the trim pot output level, it was still too hot for me and would clip the amp - does the SB series also suffer the same issue? I play HARD, too... so I know that doesnt help

Hey all you SB5000 fans.. I wanted to let you know that i'm selling my incredible sb5000. Just listed it in the Basses for sale section here on talkbass. I have decided to go in a completely different musical direction and want to let it go.. This bass has been one of the nicest is not the nicest all around axe i've ever owned.
