Speaking of pickup covers, I wish these were a little more rounded on the edges. I tend to anchor my thumb and after a few hours of playing last night, that sharp edge was really bugging me.

Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 2!

Well, I had *zero* problem getting a huge MM sound out of the last SB5000 I played - none at all. Heck, I just played it flat with both p'ups open wide. I was *all kinda* marcus...
And a Bart preamp is *not* what you want if you want to cop MM...

All Bart stuff is very "polite" sounding. I tend to like the sound of Bartolini pickups and electronics when they are recorded - it sits well in the mix. But their stuff certainly doesn't have the aggressiveness that the Marcus sound needs.
Yup. I'm a Bart "fan" - I have them in 3 of my 4 basses - but they aren't for everything. If I get an SB5000, which I am sorely tempted to do, I'd leave the stock kit in place and use it as 5 string J bass.
Question for all with a SB4000. I know it has a 1.53 nut, but what's the neck like thickness wise? I have heard some gripe about the "thick" neck on the 4000 compared to other Jazz style basses. Any comparisons to any basses on the market? Thanks in advance.
Thanks Harry. When I had my pups changed if they were not placed as close to the strings as the originals, would that affect the sound?
I don't find it thick at all. I was playing it the other night and wondering how anyone can think this neck is too thick or chunky. It really reminds me of a MM Sterling neck.
That's great to hear! I am looking to order up an SB4000 to compliment my SB5000F and I was curious about the neck profile as well. I had a couple of Stingrays at one time and the big reason I got rid of them was the baseball bat neck. The Sterlings I've played have a great neck profile, more like a Fender Jazz.
You're welcome to try mine before you order. I like Stingray necks.

I'm thinking about ordering an SB4000 with a solid Koa body & neck, flamed Koa top & peghead, ebony board, & single coils w/active electronics.
Does anyone here have one in solid Koa, and if so, can you give me your comments on the sound, weight, balance and build quality?

I haven't done a side by side comparison. I used to own a Sterling so that's what I'm basing my opinion on. I currently have 2 Stingrays though and I don't find them to be chunky either. Chunky to me is my upright neck.
For me, the SB didn't remind of of EBMM at all - The 4000 neck was rounder/thicker than my Sterlin, and the SB5000 was thinner/flatter than my StringRay 5 was...
We I forced to make a more familiar comparison... I'd say that the 4000 was more like a Warwick, the 5000 was more like Lakland.
