Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 5!

well.. i am kinda bummed out that this was the bass you returned which had finish problem..

We will see if carvin fixed anything about it. If not, i will probably return it too.

BTW, how did it sound when you had it?

Yea man. Did they list anything like that?

The finish flaws were minor, but for a bass I ordered to spec that was brand new, it had to be sent back.

The bass had finish cracks where the body meets the neck and had 2 black dots on the underside of the bass beside the input jack.

This is an example of the stress cracks:

The bass played well and it did sound good, but it wasn't the bass for me, finish cracks or not.

Yeah.. I basically bought it because of its weight. I just have to get lighter bass for now.

If it's sound good and plays great, i may just keep it. we'll see.

Did carvin offer you any discount or partial refund for the damage?

No, they did offer to pick it up and fix it and return it, but after playing the bass for a couple of days I knew it wasn't right for me.

This however is:

Hey SB fans...

I'm itching to join the ranks of the Carvin crowd. I have a Lakland Joe Osborn with a John East JRetro preamp that I'm willing to trade for the right SB5000.

Here's a link to my classified thread: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f126/ft-lakland-sl-jo-5-lpb-jretro-786926/

I'm looking for:

  • Maple or Ebony fingerboard
  • SB style headstock
  • J99A pickups
  • Standard preamp with V, V, Bass, Treble, and Tone

I'll do an even trade for the right instrument. Just thought I'd pass it along! :D

Just pulled the trigger on a blackity-blackity-black stealth SB5K via Carvin. Kudos to Don in CS for his sage advice...

Thinking this War Machine would be arriving around Labor Day? Can't arrive soon enough.

There's a fellow from the Carvin BBS who has one I'm emulating, but mine has the SB headstock. His pic is included.

Glad to be aboard, fellows! First round of drinks is on my tab!

Were those pick ups painted to match the body? If so, did Carvin do that? Sweet looking battle axe.

After wanting one for quite some time, I just took delivery of this beauty today that I got here in the classifieds!

First impressions: I have to get used to 34" basses. All my other basses are 35".

I love the electronics. It seems to be wired V V tone/passive(pp) T/B. I really like that combo, and love having the passive tone control that works even when active. The Circle K strings fit through-body!

I love the neck. A very, very close second to a US Lakland I once had.

I'm not sure if the fingerboard is Rosewood or Ebony.

I have a black pickguard and plate on the way.

In a few weeks, either this or my Lakland 55-60 (skyline) will likely be in the classifieds....

So far so good, though!

Oh man - I was checking that out this morning and you beat me to it! lol

That bass looks sweet - if you wanna trade hit me up! :D

Some new SB5000 clips:

Here are some clips I recorded this afternoon with my new TC Electronics BG500 2x10 combo amp. The bass is a Carvin SB5000 with a new set of DR Hi-Beams on it. It's recording directly from the XLR out to my computer by way of a Line6 Toneport UX-2 set as flat as possible. I did post eq out and used the memory presets on each.

Link Removed - pretty flat eq, little comp, bass bumped, little tube tone
Link Removed - contour 1, no tube tone, little more bass and tweeter tone
Link Removed - same settings as Finger above
Link Removed - this is much cleaner than what came out of the speakers, I guess Tubetone doesn't pass through the DI?

I've been using a Carvin BX500 as my amp since December. I made some similar clips with it to A/B the two. The BX500 does not have a post eq option so these are all straight through. Here they are in case that is of interest as well:

And that sir, is exactly why I'm parting with my Lakland to fund an SB. :D

Great tones man! I've always liked the TC Electronics stuff too.

Some new SB5000 clips...
Very cool!

You can definitely hear the more classic tone in the BG... sweeter up top, a bit rounder down low, maybe a bit fuller down there in the low mids too... just a tad. And the tubetone is really nice. I like what TC did with that for sure. I'm not normally into that kinda' thing, but I use that one sometimes.

The BX, on the other hand, sounds about as uncolored as any amp I've ever heard. This is SUPER useful for me personally, and I think it has a very "revealing" character as a result. More tonal detail is preserved.

YouTube - ‪Satellite - Acoustic‬‏

Hey SB pals, just thought I'd post this vid of my band's acoustic rendition of one of our tunes. I'm playing my SB5000 Fretless! Let me know what you think!

And if you like the stuff, find us on FB or come see us in the NYC area!

Hey, thanks for posting this! I've never heard the Humbucker/Single Coil combo before on this bass.

Sounds great! Were you using the Humbucker the whole time or a mix?

(Your singer looks like a combination of Josh Homme and Thom Yorke :)).

Haha I think he'll laugh at that!

That was all humbucker, I was going for max mwah for the acoustic setting.

Thanks for checking it out and the positive comments, it's my first time playing this bass outside the bedroom (even though this was just in the living room :)

The figure on that flame is gorgous. The black will complimnet well but In one of the earlier threads there is another member with a 5 that had a clear pickguard made up and it looked great. That would look killer on yours. I think he said the company should still have the template.

I saw the Koa(?) 5001 with the clear guard. It looks nice! Thanks for the heads up!

But like many others, I'm not a huge fan of the floating Jazz plate. Since they are relatively inexpensive, I'll probably get a couple of different guards from Carvin and mess with then some. I have an idea or 2....
