Thanks guys, I saw it and knew I had to have it. Got it from Dan at Premier Bass in Boulder. It's an LM strap though, not Levy's.

Thought I would share this as it was a surprise to see for me.
Talking to someone on another forum about the Carvin SB series, he said he owned one on and felt it was a "steaming American loaf"
That's the first time I can remember hearing anyone talk about the SB's like that. It made me think he might have something against Carvin as a whole (as some do) and was taking it out on the SB's.

It doesn't make any difference. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, no matter how wrong it is! 
So many people think that the price tag reflects the quality. The more expensive , the better ,,, right? Smh.. True carvin was not always on top of their game, and I admit , it made me stay wary of them, but every company has its gems , and the SB is one .
Definitely. I have a decent collection of some pretty high end stuff, and while the SB doesn't make me want to sell it all off, my SB5000 does get a lot of regular play time.
Just sayin', these basses kick a LOT of ass!!
I can only assume that he meant that the SB series was like delicious, fresh out of the oven bread.

Sounds to me like they have an agenda. It'd be interesting to hear some examples given by this person. It's easy to throw out generalized jabs, but an agenda, if present, comes out pretty quick once specifics are given. I'm assuming they haven't given any yet, which is at least a decent indication of an agenda.
After owning 60+ basses of ranging value, I can say my SB5000 is an amazing jazz bass, period. My only regret (regarding jazz style basses) was selling a Sadowsky RV5, but its difficult to say which one I liked better, as I owned them almost a year apart.
People get a heat on for everything. Just because something doesn't appeal to you doesn't mean it is insufficient in any way. By reputation I don't think highly of Carvin amps, but that is really uninformed as I think of the old redline series...a lot of new developments since then. The only Carvins I have tried over the years were the neck through designs and they seemed really well made, just not my cup of tea. In fact the guitars and basses are what Carvin does best.
So, just to be clear, unless you travel to Southern CA the only way to try a Carvin is to purchase it? I'm really interested in the SB4000. Seems like a great value and I love the preamp layout. Also, very cool body shape. Reading this thread gets the GAS going.

No, they have 10-day trials on almost everything. You can order a SB4000 off of their in stock page and be playing it soon. If you don't like it, ship it back.
For me its cheaper to ship them to me than to fly to CA Where I live, there are very few good basses available to play in stores. So it's always a ship in trial kinda deal if I want to check out something nicer than what GC carries. And most places only do a 48-hour trial. I like that Carvin does 10 days. If you work it right, you can get a rehearsal or even a gig or two in there during that period.

And because you're in northern California, the shipping would be pretty minimal. Too bad they don't have a Carvin store in Sacramento anymore. That would have been considerably closer for you.
I haven't even gotten my first one yet and am thinking about the second. If that that one had a maple board, it'd be pretty tough to resist...

I had visited the Sacramento store years ago. At the time I wasn't crazy about the basses but that was before the SB line. Unpleasantly surprised to see the store had closed!
