Cheap G&L necks, who's using them in builds?

I picked up 2 of them, and other than SERIOUS fret sprout, they're pretty great. I did have to mangle them a bit to get them to work with Fender bodies (under cutting them to expose just the fretboard). This one's nearly complete (the pickups aren't aligned correctly due to the body having problems with the cavity routing) but I test-fitted everything, so there's very little left to be done on it. I kinda like it.

I bought two as well. One is earmarked for my $100 build. The other is for some future project.

They both have fret sprout, but that's easily fixed. The hassle is the odd sized tuner holes. This too, can be fixed, but the plugs might be visible underneath the smaller tuner size. I'll put some thought to camoflaging the headstock.

Sweet looking P, did you do the sparkle finish? So, the truss rod isn't in the way if you wish to shorten the neck. That answers @hover question.

I picked that up on guitarfetish.com. It's not perfect (patch that's more white on the bass side of the body) but I think it's pretty cool. Not too sure that I like Pauwolina as a wood b/c it's VERY light and dents VERY easily, but it's a very cool bass. The quarter pounder pickup is perfect for giving me that P sound that I was listening for. I think it's going to be getting a LOT of use. You can't tell from the front, but I put an extra Fender neckplate on it that I had lying around, just to be kinda funny. I don't think it'll fool anyone!! :D

This is mid-modification, I always forget to take better photos. What you can't see is that the headstock is resting on my drummer's crash! :) You can see the bits that were cut off right there by my file. It was nerve-racking and I cut totally expecting to ruin the neck and expose the truss rod but I I didn't. Here's proof on the 5'er neck. I took a strong magnet to where I thought it might be (right around the 20th fret is what I assume) so that gave me some confidence, but I breathed a sigh of relief when I didn't hit it!

Not to make this thread all about ME, but I thought I'd post this for others who might be interested in using these necks on "Fender" bodies. Here are my 2 basses complete now, and I want to note that the intonation is perfect. I've got a couple detail shots of how I undercut the necks to expose the fretboard. My son and I thought it would be cool to make the heel match the F profile on the 5 string. I think they're pretty great. The 5 is a VM body, US P Pickup and the G&L Neck w/ tuners I had lying around. Great Father/Son bonding!

Those look great! Pardon my ignorance but what is a VM body? I liked this thread so much I just ordered a 5 string neck to play around with.
