Done them - phew!

1st gig - not bad...I was getting REAL pissed off with our singer being a snugglemuffin toward me though, played a bit crap because of it (instead of being tight and playing what I usually do I improvised ALL over it coz I felt like jacking it in...)

2nd gig - BREAKTHROUGH! Everyone in the band had given the singer a hard time over his attitude toward me...I felt GREAT again - played well too!

3rd gig - don't THINK we played QUITE as well, but a coachload of people came in just as we were going on and stayed til the end of our set before buggering off...

4th gig - another good one...sound was MUCH better than last time we played there and we met a couple cool bands (one of them's actually playing more locally to us tonight so I'm gonna go down there and hang with 'em) - the guys don't wanna play the place again (well, it was emptier than it was last time and the stage isn't really big enough for a 5-piece...but I'm just glad we proved to them that we're miles better than our first gig there!)

Playing a Happy Hours gig Friday from 5:30 to 9 at Kaminski's bar and grill.
The place is full of hot young women and old drunk men, our best demographic.
The band hasn't played together in 2 months, except to go over a new batch of original songs.
I'm fighting a bad cold/cough combo, and the drummer, who's usually late, has the PA.
We are expecting a big turnout of friends and co-workers.
Should be an interesting gig.

Doing a husband-and-wife gig tomorrow. The twist is, they don't perform together, they each have their own band!
They're throwing a big bash tomorrow. Should be a Fantastic time!

Wife's band is at 3, then another band, then husband's band around dinnertime. The guitarist and I are common to both outfits. Also on the bill are Bill Kirchen, the guy who played Hot Rod Lincoln with Commander Cody, and funky blues-rocker Tom Principato, back from Europe.

These two should draw a big crowd. I hope they come early!

Got to the Happy Hours gig yesterday, and another band was almost set up and ready to play. The Bar owners had asked them to play originally, but they never called back to confirm, so he booked us. Awkward!
The other band, Into the Blue, agreed to pack up after being offered dinner and a night's worth of drinks. Good thing, since we had a ton of people coming to celebrate a few birthdays and such. The fact that we hadn't rehearsed in two months showed on the first couple of songs, but we slipped into the groove after that and had a great time. The cough and cold gave my voice a nice raspy edge, but it is shot today. I sound like that kid Froggy from the Little Rascals.
Oh, the other band hung out almost our entire gig, mostly pounding free martinis and smirking at our songs, but we won a couple of them over by the end of the night, and a few girlfriends came up to dance. Again, Awkward.

I have an outdoor gig at a pig roast party this afternoon. Should be 200+ people there and the weather looks great. That's the good news. Now for the bad news...our rythym guitar player who also sings about 1/3 of the vocals seems to be MIA. He missed the last two rehearsals and hasn't returned phone calls. Could be a train wreck if he doesn't show up. But, I suspect he'll wander in right before we're scheduled to play. :rollno:

Food festival gig was a blast!!! Beautiful weather, friends and co-workers attended, the stage / PA / lighting were state of the art, got to play thru an Ampeg SVT CL / Ampeg 8x10 and :eek: was that a pleasant little 'bit of kit'!!!

The best part: playing for families, moms, dads, sisters, brothers, kids etc. is such a treat. It is so enjoyable to see families having a good time while being part of their entertainment.

Played yesterday, 4-8pm, at Crehan's in Belleville Ill (Metro St Louis). I was subbing for my brother who had another gig on the Riverfront (Blues Festival) and aside from the singer, whom I had met only once, I had never met any of the members of the band. We were hosting an open mic blues jam which is usually pretty improv anyway. It turned out to be a great gig and we laid down some great grooves. only a handful of players showed up to sit in but there was a nice crowd of onlookers and dancers.

Not many people were there at 3, so it was a low-pressure set. We played OK, pretty good for 2 rehearsals. She is asking me to play again on Halloween.
The 2nd band had a lot more people, plus it got dark so I could imagine as many people as I wanted ha ha! We also played OK, pretty good considering that the guitarist was the bassist until last week. I'm also asked to play Halloween with this band.
Kirchen and Principato were both great!
Net profit: $15, minus gas. :rolleyes: better than $0!

I just got back from a gig at one of our better local venues, the Jamhouse (a Birmingham club partly owned by Jools Holland).

Band line up - 5 saxes (2 alto, 2 tenor, bari), 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 2 keyboardists, 2 guitarists, bass, drums, percussionist (including vibes) and female vocal. 21 total.

Music - funk, soul, disco, rock, pop...

Highlights for me as the bassist - Earth, Wind & Fire's "In the Stone", "Rio" by Duran Duran, "Yaleo" by Santana, "Kids" by Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue, "Slave to the Rhythm" by Grace Jones, Sting's "If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free". I quite enjoyed grooving along to "Rosanna" by Toto, as well.

But the best bit - we played tonight, for the first time on a gig, Tower of Power's "What is Hip?" and it sounded just great. The drummer and I just locked into it really solidly, I thought, and even though he counted it in a tad fast I managed to just about cop Rocco's 16th note lines pretty well. I was very pleased with this one, absolutely loved it!

Tomorrow night our band has a show at the Clubhouse in Tempe. So if there are any Phoenix area TB'ers with nothing to do, I'd love for you all to come check out our band. We're play all originals and have sort of a bluesy/hard rock sound. I also think it'd be cool to put faces to some of the names here on TB, and get a chance to introduce myself to some of you, and also maybe get some feedback on our performance (haven't done many, but ya gotta start somewhere). For those interested, our bands name is Distorted Image and we hit the stage at around 7:30.

Hope to see some of you there!

Oops, forgot to check in before the gig.

Played Wednesday night and last night at Willhoite's in Grapevine, TX. It was the first gig with my new band.

Wednesday went pretty well. We started out with a *lot* of technical difficulties, but got everything pretty well sorted by the middle of the first set without losing the crowd, then rocked it pretty well for the remaining 3 sets. Only one trainwreck--my mind went completely empty on the intro to "Interstate Love Song" when the guitarist played the acoustic part with his distortion on. Picked it back up when it went into the verse though, so just a blown intro.

Last night the Steelers / Titans game was on and people were watching it (the crowd was mostly regulars), so the bar asked us to do a quick set at halftime then told us to go ahead and play again in the 4th quarter. They wanted to close up early, so we only did an hour for that second set. Same pay, less playing, get home two hours before you expected on a week night? Yes please!

Work was considerably less rough this morning than it was yesterday morning. :)

Band is playing our first gig this Sunday ...

We formed at random for a band scramble, and took first place. Part of the prize package is a one hour opening set this Sunday at a local spot as part of their kick off for their Oktoberfest celebration. Since it was part of prize package there is no money involved, but food and drink are provided to the entertainment :) ... so that should be fun.

Finally get to take my bass rig out of the house and use it above 2 on the volume :)

Playing a 40th HS Class Reunion (not my own), tomorrow night. It's my first time subbing with a band of very good, experienced players and frankly I'm a little nervous. I got the gig through one of their guitarists who I've been jamming with, who recommended me because he says I'm better than the other subs they've been using. The other two guys (guitarist/singer and drummer) I have seen and heard of, but have never played with before. We will be doing some jamming/run-throughs at set-up tomorrow but that is it as far as rehearsing. Then it will be follow-the-leader and keep your head on a swivel.

I really want to nail this gig cause it sounds like they need a sub bassist pretty regularly and if I do a good job maybe I'll become their first-call sub. They get good-paying gigs that finish before midnight and don't require hauling a lot of P.A.!
