"Check In" here before and after your gigs, Set #2, the sequel!

After going to band practice at church in the morning on Saturday with my daughter, came home and mowed the back lawn. Then got cleaned up and took the kids downtown for Pride Fest, which is an annual event sponsored by the local lesbian/gay/bi/transgendered rights group. I warned the kids that sometimes at big events not everyone behaves themselves, so they should expect a little weirdness.

And by that I don't mean just being gay, or drag entertainers or whatever, my kids know about that. But when we got there, there were indeed a couple people there who were a little "out there," in particular one little Asian lady with long straight gray hair who basically danced around the whole time we were there, whether any music was playing or not. At one point, she came up to us and pointed at my mandolin, said "That's a mandolin! Play it!" and so I played a few chords, and she said "You're an artist!" and danced away. The kids thought she was hilarious. I wonder if she was just eccentric or on something, haha.

At any rate, some friends of mine were closing the show and had asked me and a bunch of their other musician friends to come up onstage and sing on their closer, which is why I brought the mandolin. They were going to be filming for a video of the song, and I thought it would look cool onstage and add to the peace/love vibe, which is part of their stage show (they bring flowers to every show and pass them out to the audience, etc.). I found their bassist, Tom, beforehand, and cleared it with him, because I didn't want to do anything to upstage them or throw them off.

The show was running late, as most benefits seemingly do, and we had to sit through some pretty awful lip synch acts (ugh), then a different band, before my friends went on. On their penultimate song they pulled us all onstage even though there wasn't much to do but clap along, although I was familiar enough with to sing along, off-mic. Then they did the closer, and everybody tried to get at least within the vicinity of a mic, and we did the song, which is called "Let Freedom Ring." I positioned myself opposite the lead singer so the mandolin would be far away and wouldn't throw him off or anything, since none of this had been rehearsed. It was a lot of fun.

Press release from today's paper. This is our first real gig as Passing Wind in something like 5 years. We decided not to wreck the vibe by actually rehearsing...:p

On Saturday, Oct. 10, Portland band NINJA debuts at the River City Saloon. Former local musician Chris Troiano (Sugarbush, Johnny Lux Explosion, The West) is currently performing with NINJA. Troiano has spent the past year traveling with the band — a ferocious, fully ninja garbed live show — to venues throughout the Northwest. Give a listen at Link Removed.

Opening for NINJA is Charlie Escher’s own Passing Wind. Passing Wind invokes the influences of Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Sun Ra, Shagnia Twain, Boxcar Willie, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Tom Waits, and according to nearly everyone who sees them play, Frank Zappa. They will be debuting material from their new CD, 'Alienacana'.

I wrote the copy and they printed it as such in many places.
I forget where I saw it that way to begin with, but it definitely works for me... :cool:

Will be playing my biggest gig yet with my Death Metal band tonight, it's our EP launch and we have worked long and hard to to get our set and performance ready, I have even battled through glandular fever in TWO WEEKS just so that I can be ready for tonight.

My car is packed, all I need now is some petrol and some energy drinks. Very nervous.

Did I mention we're playing with one of my favourite Australian bands, Sleepmakeswaves? Should be very interesting!

Wow...that was an experience. I was dead nervous beforehand but wound up having a ball. Was pretty annoyed that our set was cut short by 4 songs but the crowd was huge and the pit looked pretty dangerous from where I was standing.
Have had a bad run with mixers lately and we're seriously considering just taking our own mixer along to shows. We had to hire the backline for the UK Subs and had no transport so it was a huge mission hauling the rigs there. I was allowed to use the bass rig. I only have a Fender combo amp and won't be in a position to purchase anything flash anytime soon so it's good to get a chance to try out different stuff in these settings. The bad part is that the mixer was a ____ and I couldn't use the Ampeg head - he was insisting on the DI box. Ended up using a Warwick head with the Ampeg cabs. Lighting was really bad and the mixer gave us more to gripe about but apparently we "tore it up" and it was fun so that's what counts. Hell, we even got paid for a change. A couple of people said it was our best show so far with the new line-up and Charlie Harper had some nice words to say too - gotta be happy with that. Next weekend we're playing a party and then I think we're having a break while we try to find another guitarist.

PS. Now we find out some tool who was putting the rigs in their roadcases tried to do it w/o taking the lead out and it's snapped off inside it. Of course it is us that gets the bad name for hiring gear now...

We have an 11 song set happening this weekend at the "4th
Annual Motorcycle Musicfest" held at the Sam Ash in King Of Prussia, PA.
We are a cover band and have a 14:00 slot Saturday (Sunday Rain Date).
This is only our second "real" gig. The first was a Fall Festival a couple weeks ago, also outdoors. For that we played three full sets as we were the only band that night. It was a hoot.
Plenty of original music will be there as well with performances from Sideways Johnson, Midheaven, Last Hour Battle, Mesina & School of Rock.

rescheduled for this Sunday, 10/25 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. "Work
Release" will be performing our 1-hour set beginning at 2:00 pm. Sorry

Heading out in about 2 hours for an early Halloween party. It's a zombie theme party, and therefore I will be breaking one of my Halloween rules: no greasepaint. How can you be a zombie without greasepaint? Can't wear a mask, I sing. So, greasepaint it is.

I just hope I can clean it off my basses afterwards.
