So, the gig went pretty well in many respects, but not without problems.
A week ago, our lead guitarist quit. We scrambled and grabbed a guy to sub - I had played with him just once at a jam, but I knew he was up to it.
We had just one long rehearsal and put together 35 tunes, not perfectly, but workable on the bandstand. He fit in with us really, really well, so I was very confident.
So, the show comes, we had a weak first set performance, then the second set rocked hard, and the third was gravy and maybe a little self indulgent, but it was almost 1am by then.
When done, the bar owner approaches me and says "Do I pay you?" and I said yes. She says, "We never really talked about $$", so I say "I assumed we'd just get what the other band was getting (that we subbed for since they couldn't play that night)". She said, "I'm gonna pay you more because you have more people in your band and you played my absolute most favorite song ever (Turn the Page - Seeger). Also, I want to talk later about you being a regular band in our rotation - you are just what we are looking for."
So, hard to beat, even with all the mistakes.

had a gig at a rap festival thee other night, went real well, we were a little worried because we're not really rap, we just got a rapper for a lead singer (RATM wannabes) got paid decent, lucky for me, i had to pay my rent
We (Chronic Acid) go on tonight at 9:30 at The Gasoline Alley in Largo, FL. We're 1 of 4 bands, all original rock.
Post gig analysis:
Gig went great! First time I've ever gone wireless and it did not fail! Got a great recording of it from the soundman. The place had very PRO sound and a very good soundman! Everything went smooth..setup between bands, monitor mix, our set, my rig...all around great night for us!

First gig tomorrow. It's not much, very local bands and only a couple of songs, but a landmark, I suppose.
It's been a ride, the band formed literally the night before auditions. Our drummer had never even played before. Drummers are very scarce around here, we did not have many options. He got a crash course, and by the end of the night demanded that we make his parts more complicated. He's really, really dedicated. I am very impressed with how fast he's picked up over the past three weeks, he's a solid timekeeper!
Our first singer was a very confident person. Not arrogant, just confident. He completely flubbed the auditions, froze up from stage fright. This is unusual as he is a regular public speaker. His nose was dislocated by our drummer in an unrelated and accidental incident. He didn't even flinch, but the drummer was scared ****less. We later booted this singer for an extreme lack of dedication. We scrambled to fill the spot just three days ago with a guitarist friend of mine.
I only have one concern; Our lead guitard is guitarded, and not too flexible. I can only hope he is on his game tomorrow.

This show went ok - there were people dancing all night but I don't know... we're basically a rock cover band and this place has stressed their desire for "dance/r'n'b" stuff... we've added 30 new songs to our repertoire in the last 3 weeks to accommodate this club - not so sure it's gonna work out. The owner said her business/clientele is changing and she doesn't know why, yet she's depending on the bands to make things happen. It's hard because we're working hard to make "her" happy when the crown digs what we do as "us" but doesn't seem to respond when we're doing the stuff she wants.
Ok.. nuff whining... we've got some stuff at some of our other clubs coming up - I know those will be a lot more satisfying!
Just had my first gig with the new cover band on Saturday, learned 40+ songs in a month, played almost everything especially the hard stuff perfectly (RHCP, RATM...) but screwed up the easiest song on the whole set list...Dammit by Blink 182 of all things "Ohh crap, how does the chorus go again?!"

Sometimes, it takes a while for the whole story to play out. As it turned out, I never played the gig. Got to the location, found a close parking spot and my son did his 'roadie' thing: getting all the gear ready to move in. Moved my arm and felt a "crack". Well, I actually heard it as well. Also felt the pain afterwards. Went inside the venue and I had my son take out my bass to see if I could play it: no dice. excruciating pain. The leader starts calling people,trying to find a body with a pulse and a bass to replace me(its Saturday night, 1/2 hour from our downbeat for a very lavish Bat-Mitzvah, good luck with that). So my son is asked to wear the bass for the beginning of the party (supposedly the only time the hosts of the party will be in the big room where the band is set up) while our band will begin the evening with some high intensity Hora's and some other Jewish material:the DJ will then do a set and it will continue to alternate like that through the night. He played alto sax in high school and is somewhat musical (loves Radiohead, he certainly doesn't have pedestrian tastes in music) but now he is going to Milli-Vanilli his way through a set of music, attempting to look like he's playing while either the leader or one of the other band members is going to play left hand bass with a keyboard. And he's a shy guy so I can only imagine whats going on in his head about this. I peek in and he looks good with a bass on. He's looking at the leader for key changes. Can't peek in for long because the pain is only getting worse and there is no comfortable position for my arm.[my other friend after hearing this tale of woe tells me "what a way to have your clubdate cherry popped"]
I drive home left handed and after a few phone calls, go to a local hospital for them to splint the arm and (most important) to get something for pain management. Nothing like the emergency room of a hospital on a Saturday night.I'm put on a morphine drip for about 15 minutes, not given a splint (contrary to my orthepedists instructions) and given a perscription for some Percaset and a sling.
Admitted to the hospital on Tuesday, where they have their stuff together, and on Thursday, my scheduled biopsy/surgery takes place. Just got out yesterday, and I have more procedures to go and a whole bunch of Physical Therapy ahead of me. I also now have eleven inches of titanium in my right arm, running from my elbow to my shoulder. Think of it as a tone bar.
jgsbass, I feel for you. I had minor surgery in November, and the cure felt worse than the disease in my case. They'll take the titanium rod away after your fracture has healed, so enjoy your tone bar for the time being.
The doctors call it a nail and it's permanent. The plan was to keep it there because of the extensive bone damage from the tumor. I'm waiting til the radiation starts. I wonder if my son will be able to pick me up with his night vision goggles

Just got back from our gig down in Rockford. There was a pretty decent turn out. Maybe about 100+ people there at the peak. Some girl was having her B-day party... they had a "southern skanks" theme. I'll have to see if we got any good pics for the CAS thread. Ended up getting some nice compliments from some of the non-friend patrons.

I'm performing with the Journey tribute band "Separate Ways The Band" tonight in Newport, RI at the Newport Blues Cafe.
Should be a great gig. Free food and drinks, hotel room and a decent paycheck. These tribute gigs are always a.good time. I'll report back tomorrow after the show and breakfast!

Okay gig went okay considering our Keyboard player could not make the show We cover Classic Rock and most if not all have keys in them so, he has something to do ha, ha, ha anyway what we decide to do since it was a biker bar was to throw out the keyboard songs for some metal stuff Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Metallica songs most of us grow up playing this stuff so it was very easy to switch and work them into the show It was nice rocking some old Geezer Bulter, and Bob Daisly riffs great stuff and of the bikers loved it as well we throw in some Rainbow and Deep Purple on requests and the show rock and went off without a hitch only that happen that was out of the normal a chick dancing fell over a mike stand on to her butt! two shows this weekend Friday and Sat....RTS
My cover band, Lips, is playing at Callahan's in Azusa tonight - 9-1... rock and dance covers - usually a great time at this smallish place!
Okay both gigs Friday and Sat night went very well pack house for both shows the fans really came through for us! We nothing unusual happen either gig so that is my story and I am sticking to it lol. This Sat we are playing in a place called the Orange Lantern, this one has many strange rules connected to it, have to start at 10, you most play 4 sets and the show most end at 2:30AM so you have to figure out all the play times of every song and not go over break time in between the sets has to perfectly time per the signed contract. Supposed to snow up to our eyeballs here North Jersey I would hate to have to cancel this place again hopefully all cleaned up by Sat night I will keep you posted!
This night went very well... there was a lull in the 2nd set and we took too much time between songs to build a good rhythm... but 3rd and 4th set were off the hook and the whole room including staff was on the dance floor till closing - not a huge crowd, but definately a great time!
This week we'll be at Oh Grady's in Granada Hills. This is a new venue for us(as this band) so we'll see how it goes - trying not to over saturate our friends with requests but still getting the word out like mad to be there.
Saturday 2/27 my band Virtual Machine will be at RP McMurphys in Holmes PA... Nice little club/bar parking is not great but we do really well there. We're a classic rock cover band. Lately we're Struggling with whether to get involved with a booking agent as alot of places in the area wont even talk to me...
The venue is a movie theater, with the movie seats still there. They've put in a bar and a small kitchen. They also kept the marquee, which it was fun to see our name on, in big letters.
The stage area is large enough for a backstage with comfy seating, and plenty of room on the stage itself. So we had dancers right in front of us, then a few people in the close-up seats, then an expanse of empty seats back to the bar area, where the rest of the crowd was. It wasn't full by any means, yet we played for part of the door & made good money.
Our performance was a little rough, due to the fact that 3 of our 4 rehearsals were vetoed by the evil Snow-pocalypse. But we got some good grooves going, and we were very well received. And the light crew (81 Productions) that we brought in was a nice addition to the show. Thanks, Terry!
Best of all, they want us back!
Next gig: back to the country! Brandy Stills Friday & Saturday, March 5 & 6, at Addy's in Manassas VA. (Insert boot-scootin' smiley here)
