First gig in about a month tonight. We had 2 cancellations over the last two weeks :rollno:

We played our local British Legion and it was great fun! 3 1/2 hours with breaks every 1 and a bit. We got the usual person telling us we should play something different :hmm: The setlist is about as eclectic as you can get! Saw the woman dancing her ass off in the last set to Brown Sugar!!

We had a bunch of guys wanting more at the end. We had already over ran by 10 mins, I would take that as a plus.

We were gonna start charging more for 3+ hour gigs but thought better to play the gigs and get the name out. Then again I had a great time and walked away with £50 in my hipper so I cant complain.

I'm just back from a festival gig.

We opened the Napton Festival, going on at about 12.30.

To be honest, we didn't expect more than a few people to peer into our marquee out of curiosity, we weren't on the main stage or anything.
However, we pulled a great crowd in and they were very enthusiastic - not bad for the first act on, when the bar had only just opened too.

We finished with a storming "Paint it black" and they went mad for an encore. The running order was pretty strict but we had a few minutes spare, so indulged them with "I fought the law".

Well, they loved that and we got a hell of a cheer at the end, plus people looking to book us for other shows, one of these was a 40th birthday - in April 2009!

Anyway, great fun was had by all.

Tonight, it's my country band at the Charles Town WV Moose lodge...
Went pretty well, we kicked out the jams because we don't have a gig til Oct. 5.

...tomorrow my brother, my cousin and me at Coleman Power Sport, a motorcycle dealership in Woodbridge VA, starting at noon. I hope the weather cooperates...
Weather was great, and we had many more people this time. Things were going real well until they fired up the Dynojet, about 25 yards away from us. I'd never seen the Dynojet before, but we found out what it is the hard way. It's a mobile motorcycle diagnostic device, mounted inside a box trailer. You roll your bike in, they strap it in upright, then they start it up and gun the heck out of it. As you might imagine, it can get a tad loud. OK, really f'n loud. Did I mention it was about 25 yards from us? Nice planning there, folks! :rollno: Especially helpful on the quieter songs.

A nice GB gig in Lexington, VA, sponsored by three of Virginia's biggest law firms. The crowd was in a festive mood, the catered food was great, and stage and FOH sound was sweet.

And then amid folks coming up with requests and saying nice things about the band, we had That Guy. A very preppy law student who looked to have found his way to the open bar a few times tries to get the guitarist's attention *in the middle of a song he was singing* to ask if we "know the new Kelly Clarkson song." We wrap up the tune and tell the kid politely that Kelly Clarkson isn't on the set-list. "Well," he says, jerking his thumb at us, "if one of you can sing it, *I* can play it on guitar."

:ninja:

The Benders for a club gig tonite, and another club gig tomorrow nite.

Tomorrow morning, a jazz gig at 9 AM outdoors.........really! Looks to be about 49 degrees and a chance of showers as we get started..........yuk.

Well, both club gigs went really well.........a very appreciative crowd Friday night, and the band was absolutely "on" for Saturday night.

As far as the jazz gig.....at least it didn't rain....the gig went fine, but when the strings are cold and crunchy and you barely have any feeling left in your fingers, it's difficult to be inspired!

We're playing our usual 2nd Friday of the month last Friday, and boy, did I have an off night. I sent out the usual email anouncements the week before, and my brother and his new wife, as well as his ex-wife and her boyfriend show up. Fortunutly, they ignored each other, but I still had to make time for both and felt a little unconfortable.

I slept very poorly the night before, and felt like crap. I figured I'd use beer to get me pumped up during the night. It's not that I don't have a couple beers when we play, but a couple more is not a good idea. Made a number of playing mistakes.

During the first set, my sound was awful, distorted, lacking volume. During the break I tested the battery in my J, replugged all the cables, and made some kind of adjustments. Struggled all night long. As I found out on Sunday, my amp had a problem and needs repair.

Several co-workers came to see me for the first time. Fortunutly for me, they had been drinking before they arrived after the first set, so they did enjoy themselves. One of the girls continued drinking, until she had too much, and puked in the bathroom, so they had to leave. She needs to get out more often.

Yesterday, I sent the band an email apologizing for my bad performance, and listed my stupid excuses.

I might have invited too many people, because I spent every break going from table to table making sure I visited all of then at least once or twice. Too many distractions....

That's a good problem to have! But, yeah, you'd prefer to have a good night in front of them... gotta watch that beer! A couple means a couple, not 6 or 15!

Live and learn.

Maybe I'm just gettin' old, but I find myself drinking less and less beer at gigs, and while playing golf (my other obsession.) Every now and then someone will ask why, and I tell them that I've determined that I like to play bass (and golf) more than I like to drink beer.

All that being said, I've also found out that I can "catch up" very quickly once the gig (or round) is done. :D

Played Fri night at the catering facility attached to the Bethpage Golf Club (home of the famous Black course and the 2009 US Open). Had an email with 20 harsh rules about playing there (..no tank tops coming in, no parking here, no parking there, no cocktail hour food, no food in general....) and it turned out to be underwhelming. Sat wasn't work: I was at the LI GTG, surrounde by my Talkbass brothers , and a whole lot of impressive lumber. Sunday aft, going to NJ ( watch out for Yankee traffic) for a Bar Mitzvah.

I'm supposed to play a couple songs at my guitarist's old school on sunday for some little festival thing. We aren't getting paid, but thats ok because we don't really have any songs down yet. We're supposed to learn some stuff friday and saturday, and I'm guessing that we might get 3 songs good to go. Oh well, it's exposure at least.

Last night, did a video shoot, we'll let ya' know when it comes out. Kinda fun, a national act coming back to town to shoot at our old high school.

Looking forward to having Friday off for a change, but then 2 gigs on Saturday, one with the steel drum band, and a club date with the Benders.

Last night I had the great pleasure of mixing a long-time friend, Tony Furtado. Damian Erskine was playing bass, which was a treat to say the least. The whole band (a quartet) was ripping, and the show was pretty busy too. As much as I enjoy playing gigs myself, mixing world class players like this is a ton o' fun too.

Coming up Fri and Sat, our home away from home, Addy's in Manassas VA. I'm eager to get to this one and debut my new QSC PLX 1104 power amp! I won't be using it's full potential, though, because Addy's is one of those rooms where the quieter you play, the better for the overall sound. My last band just couldn't figure that out. Luckily, my current band is good with the concept. So I'll just be using one side of the QSC with my Hartke 4x10 cab. That's still 317 watts, according to the spec sheet!
