Funny how the smallest gigs are sometimes the most fun. This past weekend we only had one gig, at the smallest club we play, a little neighborhood bar that we can barely fit into. As usual, it was a blast..........great crowd, everyone lovin' the band.....and most importantly, the band was definately "on".......great weekend!

I gigged last night.

Biggest show of my life, 6,500 people. Played bass for a female singer/guitar player from LA and her good friend who is a drummer. We only got to rehearse 3 times together but we pulled off a flawless show of her original material and one cover.

Oh and the headlining act was the guy in the second set of photos.

I guess this is a good time for me to jump in this thread. My first gig ever is tonight at my high school, Eastern Technical High School just outside baltimroe in Essex, Maryland. There is an event each year called tech after hours and its pretty much just a good spot for local bands and its actually a lot of fun, only about 100-200 people in the crowd but still really fun and energetic. Now I'm just killing time until I have to leave for a soundcheck in about 2 hours. Its making me nervous considereing I'm pretty much just playing for friends and people I know.

I'll throw up our set list to kill some more time.

Played two gigs this weekend with my jammy bluegrass string band, Spare Rib & The Bluegrass Sauce (Link Removed).

First one was friday night at The Brick Tavern, in Rosyln, WA. Oldest drinking establishment in Washington state, that was featured as the bar in Nothern Exposure tv show. We had a decent turn out for a venue out in the middle of the mountains, and great energy from the crowd dancing. Rather than make the trek back down the mountain to Seattle, we opted to crash in the apartment over the bar. The next morning, we woke up to find ourselves locked in, all doors deadbolted and the windows way too small to even climb out. So we proceed to set off the alarm, and wait for the cops to show up... of course, being a small mountain town, the police never show, but the bar owner arrives 2 hours later to set us free.

Second gig was sunday afternoon for a community fundraiser in Everett, WA, to hopefully buy 100 acres of old growth slated for clearcut up near Index, WA. 4 bluegrass bands, silent auction, organic food catered, kid's craft fair.. The venue was a beautiful wooden hall, but the room was too alive and boomy to even attempt to set up our full PA, so we opted for the house system which was 4 mic inputs to a crown amp and one single huge PA speaker 20ft over head the stage. We decided to go for the old timey acoustic mic setup (open condensors all around) and basses into my bass rig. and NO monitors.. we made due, but i realized that from now on, i'm demanding monitors at every gig (especially when my bass rig is the only thing electric on stage and burying all other instruments in the stage mix).

next weekend we head into the studio to record at Paradise Sound. yay!

My show went quite well too. Sound guy also very bad, so bad so that, there was only one stage monitor, the mics were really low on both the stage monitors and the crowd monitors. Plus I couldn't even hear the guitar player because he put his amp up almost next to his mic. The crowd was definitly into us though, cool experience seeing people mosh to the song that you wrote, and sing along to you playing one of your favorite songs that you covered. I have a few pics, but they are from when me and the guitar player jumped on stage for the next band, and when I played guitar for a song. Instead I'll throw up a video later once our friend gets them up on youtube.

Playing at one of the local roadhouse bars in the Pine Barrens of NJ on Sat Nov 3. Haven't played there in a while. I drove by today and saw we are billed on the marquee ABOVE the $1.99 Wed. Pasta Special! Look out, Lump Crab Soup, you're next.

Here's a corporate Halloween gig I played Friday night. Lots of women is "sexy" Halloween costumes (not pictured). I actually liked wearing the hockey mask. I could roll my eyes during "Brown Eyed Girl" and no one knew.

On Monday night we had an audition for the Bodog battle of the bands...it was an amazing show. The sound was real good, great monitoring and the backline rocked - 8x10 Ampeg fridge with SVT-4 Pro head. There was a lot of good bands too... It was nice not having to lug around my gear, setting up and tearing down. It was definitely worth the 2 hour drive to audition and go to work the next day on 3 hours of sleep because we made it into the competition :) We are all pretty stocked because we went in there and just had fun...we didn't get too psyched for it and just went out there and played our hearts out. Can't wait till the next phase of the competition!

I agree about the comment on small gigs.
I had a gig with our band last night. Mid week gigs are pretty unusual for us and obviously for the little roadhouse we were playing in. For the first 3 hours our four piece literally outnumbered the audience.
I think what made it so great was that we fired the drummer last weekend and played with another guy last night that runs circles around our former guy.


For me as a bass player simple things like having an amazing drummer completely makes up for the fact we only made $7 a piece! :D
