"Check In" here before and after your gigs this weekend!

Saturday night is my 1st gig w/ a new cover band. Three of us have been together for 5 months, but our two newest members (vocalist and guitar/vocalist) have only been practicing about a month or so. Our last two practices haven't been great, so I'm a little nervous. Plus it's outdoors at night, 7-10. It is a church fundraiser, and we are the headliner!! Hope it works out.

2 or 3 weeks ago, we had a personnel change. We replaced our guitarist, & subtracted a keyboard player. We've had 3 or 4 gigs since, and I must say, we're all enjoying things much better.

So, we're having our first gig back at a familiar venue with the new line up. Looking forward to unveiling the new line up to THESE folks tonight.

Saturday, my daughter's HS marches at the Buckeye Classic, so she gets to march in Ohio Stadium... YAY!

Then, Tuesday were cutting some demos... the demo's we have on our myspace havent been US this whole time... Just warmed over cuts from singers previous bands... Frankly, this always pissed me off, because I just dont care for the bass tone in these demos. So, its going to be a good couple of days.

Out Saturday night gig went pretty well. Although our drummer was a little nervous (his 1st real gig) and rushed the tempo on a few songs, I think we sounded good, and we got a few compliments.

We will need to tighten up a bit, but that will come with more practice.

Played an outdoor gig last night. High of about 49f, low of about 45f. Played in our black dress outfits. We were smart enough to bring black jackets, though.

It was a benefit for a camp that caters to kids with terminal illnesses. Very worthy cause. (But a paying gig for us.)

It was a little tough, because we were FREEZING on stage, and had 4 sets with about 45mins between each set, for various auctions and fund raising activities. So a long night. Much longer than usual for us. We had to pull out a lot of old material in the set list!

But I think we played a little better than usual, to make up for it. The drummer and I were tight all night. Solos were exceptional. The guitarist and keys were a little adventuous, but it all worked well.

Much fan love. And the sponsors met their fund raising goals, so "a good time was had by all" despite the weather.

Got a gig on friday, in a tiny little venue but its always a fun one because its packed with our mates and random people as well, almost always have a good reaction there. But playing with a load of hardcore bands, I'll let you know about it afterwards

Tomorrow, my country band has a private party right near home. It's 7 - 11 pm, which is good, because...
Saturday, my brother and I are opening for the Fabulous Thunderbirds at GEICO headquarters in Chevy Chase MD. We play one hour at 2 pm, they play at 4. Tuff Enuff baby!

Last Saturday, we had a date at the Atwood Lake Fall Festival in northeast Ohio. HUGE festival...........boaters, campers, crafts, food, all the normal stuff. We were scheduled from 1-4 PM, and around 12:15, the ENTIRE park lost electric power! Power wasn't restored until around 2:30, we started around 2:45 and played 'till just a few minutes after 4, as they had to move on with the schedule and attempt to get back on track. Still, a good set and a great time on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

This week, we have a concert set later today for local college's anniversary celebration. I get to be home on Saturday night, for a change!

Tomorrow, my country band has a private party right near home.

It was held on a cattle ranch about 20 minutes from my house. Lots of nice folks and some good barbeque & keg beer. This was the 3rd gig with a sub drummer, and we were minus our keyboard/guitar player, but in spite of those things, it went well. The sub drummer was a guy I brought in, and he made me happy I'd recommended him. Much better than the last 2 guys we tried.
The stage was a sort of podium thing, normally used to display the cattle for sale. It had a very uneven floor of shredded wood, with a few pieces of plywood laid on top. I set up my rig leaning against the side rail. I was lucky it didn't fall over during the gig!

We rehearsed a lot for this gig, and it really showed. It went very well. An actual stage, w/sound company & big PA system. We had a great time and got lots of nice compliments afterwards. I played my Spector NS4 through the Alembic F-1X & QSC to my 1x18 and 4x10 cabs.
The Thunderbirds were loose, but good. Although it was the biggest gig we've done, I suppose it was small by their standards.
Their bassist, Randy Bermudez, was playing a cream-colored Precision with a tort pickguard & bridge cover, and an Ampeg rig, I think it was two 1x15 cabs. I didn't get to meet him, or find out what year the bass was. He didn't play anything real fancy, but laid down a good solid bottom, in blues-approved fashion.
Two impressive things during their set: one guitarist broke a string at the beginning of a solo, but kept playing for several more times around the pattern, and sounded great! And Kim Wilson did a harmonica solo that was truly a solo. They started the song, then the rest of the band left the stage, and Wilson played constantly by himself for at least 10 minutes. And not just play a lick, take a breath, play a lick. This was constant sound from the harmonica, seemingly without taking a breath! Finally the rest of the band came back, and they finished the song. How did he do that?? He wasn't even breathing hard, didn't even seem to be winded at the end! And he's not a young guy! That was right impressive.
So all in all, a cool music weekend! Tomorrow I start my new job! Woohoo!

He may be able to cyclic breath, which is in through the nose out through the mouth constantly, or he just breathed in through the harmonica, which will also produce sound. You'd probably be able to hear this though.

My band The Reverend John's is playing @ Jeff Healeys Roadhouse in Toronto tonite (Fri Oct 19). Looking forward to it as we've got a new drummer.

First show tonight with a band I joined 14 days ago. We are playing a new club in town. They haven't played any shows for a couple months because of the old bass player departing and not wanting to get a rep for canceling. Hope it goes freakin great because the CD that was released a few months ago is killer

Playing the harmonica requires you to inhale for some notes and exhale for others. Its not as impressive as circular breathing on a sax but I'm sure it was good

My band plays at an Oktoberfest this wknd....both saturday and sunday.....this'll be my first time using my new gear in an outdoor setting and I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Healeys gig went really well. Good location - good sound - at least a few hundred people there. The crowd was really into it, and most of the people I didn't recognize so that's a good sign. Lots were coming up asking where they could see us again etc.

We had our FIRST gig as a band this weekend. It wasn't a paying gig, and we only did 13 songs. I work with our guitarist, and another guy in our office has a Halloween party every year. We thought it'd be a good chance for us to work out some kinks and get things rolling to more gigs in the future.

I should probably do some explaining before posting the pictures. I went as Michael Vick (I had the name "VICK" on the back of my orange t-shirt with the number 7. My wife went as a pit bull), so I had some face make-up on. I hope it doesn't offend anyone, it didn't seem to offend anyone at the gig - most people thought it was a good costume!
