They all showed, and bought beers for the band! No rig problems, but I was using a Eden 410 for the first time, and it's a bit louder than I'm used to, so it took some time to adjust. Put on some new strings too, forgot how good that sounds.

New strings...+1,000!!! I picked up some DR Mellow Yellows at Summer NAMM, and put them on last week. They sounded, felt, and looked great!

No more gigs for a while, sadly. I hope we will record again this weekend. We'll be on tv on 11/19. They have a web stream for the shows, so I'll post that when we get done.

my first show this weekend went quite well. lots of folks showed up, we rocked the place, and got a show opening for a very good local band out of the deal. all in all, it couldn't have gone any better.

I put on DR Low Riders for the first time, based on opinions here. DR makes a good string, both in sound and feel. What are Mellow Yellows?

The Eden 410 was loaned to me for a tryout. It's used but looks brand new. Sounds great but weighs a ton. I really want a UL410, but this would be over $500 less. Hard to pass up. What would you do?

Is taking risks and playing on the edge a good way to keep things fresh? I'm kind of worried people may get bored after hearing the same stuff all the time. I just try to play my best. We did roll out some new stuff though.... Bennie and the Jets, Jump (Van Halen), and a TV theme medley (still in developement) that goes from Cheers, Fat Albert, The Jeffersons, and finishes with Three's Company. I guess you could consider that risky!

Oy, what a weekend. Started with 1. Turns out I had it for the wrong day ( my mistake). Picked up a Sunday afternoon without realizing I had a 6 PM start far away. Then I picked up Saturday night at the last minute on Friday

UPDATE!!!!


Got in from my gig just an hour ago and it went really well! Did 30 minutes practice, then the service went as smoothly as I could have wished for.

The only major problem came when I overtensioned my G string and it snapped. So I replaced the string and have a souvenir of my first gig!

Could have also been the bridge if your bass was a cheapy, look out for that. That is, unless the string broke when you were tuning it.

I was using my Shergold (which cost me a lot!) and it broke because I turned the machinehead far too tight.

Saturdays gig reunited me with a drummer I hadn't played with for 25 years, Benny Gramm. You might know his brother Lou, of Foreigner.
Sunday I had 1 hour to pack up, drive 50 miles and set up for a 2nd gig. It was close but no cigar as I was 20 minutes late. So was the wedding party so it was a close call.

My former jazz band conned me into doing a couple of holiday gigs, so it's jazz arrangements of Christmas chestnuts for me this Saturday. This is at our old home, Maryhill Winery, in the boonies of south central Washington.

I have a gig tomorrow afternoon. My first show I'm gonna bring my Ashdown amp and my five string Ibanez. They're supposed to have a backline there (some cab), so I hope it works out well.

Got my last trial church gig tomorrow at 5.30! I think I'm gonna be brave and use my 5 stringer and maybe an effects pedal, probably my ovedrive.

My first gig was tonight... we were playing with a lot of big local bands, unfortunately my band played first. But we got people into our music and it went well. I brought my amp but I ended up not using it. They had a Hartke 4x10 setup for stage sound and I just went through a DI. My tone was surprisingly good. One of the other bassists there was playing a Bongo 4 HH and it was the sickest tone I've ever heard. I need to get me the 5 string.

I had a great weekend and want to share. We played Friday and Saturday nights at the same place, filling in for two cancellations. I've heard that Thankgiving weekend has low crowd turnout, so there was no expectations on my part. Maybe that's why the other two bands cancelled.

Friday night had a decent crowd, and most everybody stayed the whole night. I really think that every time we play together, we get better. This was the second gig with the (new to me)Eden 410xst, and this time I put it on a milk crate to reduce stage coupling with the hollow stage. Tone and volume mix was perfect. The crowd was enjoying themselfs and we even played past 1:00 am. Since we were coming back the next day, we were allowed to leave our stuff on the stage. This was especially good news to me, as I also own and transport the PA, with 2 mains and 2 monitors.

Saturday was too cool. No lugging of cabinets, 5 minute setup, lots of friends came, and the place was packed by the end of the first set. I played really well, concentrating on locking with drummer, proper hand positioning, and relaxing. A friend who is giving me some free lessons was there, and confirmed I was looking good and playing good. We invited the bar staff to come up and sing a song or two. One guy sang Van Halen's Jump, it was the only the second time we played it, but it came off great. I have to repeat this again: every time we play together, we get better, even though we been together for over a year. It's a good feeling for someone like me with moderate ability and experience. This was also the first time we had a tip jar, and made around $40. I would actually prefer someone buying me a drink, as the bar would profit from it. I don't know if anybody would agree with me, but I feel like I was hired by the bar to bring drinking patrons in for their profit. I got paid for playing, 2 drinks included, the rest half price, and don't want to be greedy, so I'm happy.

I'm glad this has been stickied... I've never been able to find it when looking for it....

Anyway, my band had a last-minute surprise fill-in show last night... I've been sick for the past couple weeks and definitely am not up to full speed yet... and last night was very chilly here in Sacramento, and my hands were still ice cold by the time we were starting. I'm sure you all know what cold temperature will do you your hands and fingers as far as dexterity and velocity are concerned. Needless to say, I was absolutely awful on the first few tunes, until my hands were able to warm up sufficiently. But then I had major issues seeing the dots on my Hellcat VI's fretboard (they are made of dark grey mother-of-pearl material and totally vanish into the dark wood of the fretboard unless you are looking at it almost straight on). So that messed me up a bunch of times too. I wish it had big bright parallelogram markers like my guitar (being played by the guy on the right in the pic below. I'm the one on the left). Anyway, I plan to get a pair of warm gloves to keep in my box of gear for instances like last night so I can warm up my hands before we go onstage, and I plan to get some phosphorescent adhesive material that I can cut into shapes and stick to my fretboard over the dots (at least until I can afford to have new bigger and brighter inlays put in).

Anyway, the show was fun and people said we sounded good. Although our cover of "A Means to an End" sounded a bit off for some unknown reason. It was one of our last ones, and I know I played it just fine....
