I did 3 songs on Sat night with the band at the club I go to. The only thing is, I am not used to "sudden changes"...the singer/guitarist messed up at the end and screwed me up and I about died! lol! But the good thing is nobody noticed in the crowd. But I am so embarrassed about it!
3 gigs last week, and 1 new toy!
now usually, i go DI->PA for most gigs, as i'm lazy and don't want to haul my mesa-boogie M-2000 amp and ashdown mini15 cab (as my little scion xB is always packed to the brim with hauling a full PA + monitors + the awkward fitting washtub bass), but on tuesday decided to splurge and purchased a new Phil Jones Bass Briefcase amp (chosen for it's small size and the optional DC/Battery ability).
So first gig of the week was wednesday at a local irish pub in Seattle that my bluegrass string band plays at the 2nd wed of every month. for this venue (which has a wood stage, hard wood floors, and wood paneled walls), we go with an old-timey single condenser mic setup, but of course that leaves me out of the mix (but the washtub projects louder than any traditional upright bass, so i'm still heard/felt). i plugged the 'tub into just the PJB Briefcase for the night, turned it up to about 10 o'clock for some additional sound reinforcement to my acoustic sound. damn that sounded good!
second gig of the week was on friday at a little bar up in Leavenworth, WA. For this gig, it was 3 of us from the bluegrass band (2 members couldn't make it) and a guest drummer. I brought out my new-to-me 1981 Ibanez Musician (the half-fretted one) and my monster pedal board (both which never get any gig time). I placed the PJB Briefcase on the opposite side of the stage, next to the drummer, DI'd it into the mains (just barely up in the mix). Man, that little amp, still only set to about 3 o'clock, was able to keep up with a powerful worldbeat drummer! Amazing! Also, amazingly, for an un-promoted out-of-town show we had 100 ppl show up just by word of mouth.
third gig was saturday at a wedding with 250+ guests. They had built us a nice wooden 16x16 stage, outdoors, with a breath-taking scenic view of the mountains rising behind us as our "backdrop". The full bluegrass band was there for this one. Played for 4 hours with one short setbreak. And again, that little PJB kicked some serious behind, even with out having a backwall to bounce the bass off of. Also, the washtub has never sounded so good! perhaps i got so used to hearing myself only through 15s w/ no horns (the typical cab setup i've been using for the past 15 years).
upcoming, i've got a gig this saturday with the KEXP jugband, The Dexter Street Stompers, playing some work-party for the Nature Consortium. So basically we'll be playing way out in the woods for a bunch of hippies cleaning up the forest, which means NO POWER! and in steps the PJB Briefcase amp with it's battery! Wheeee!!

My country band is out in Winchester VA tonight, at the Moose lodge. The event was to be a wedding, but the groom got laid off, so the wedding was postponed. But evidently they still wanted to have a party! Gotta love that!
Oddly enough, there was a wedding in progress when I got there. We concluded that it was some other wedding. It did provide us with some extra (very well-dressed) people, and some delicious cake.
The good news: the new ear-buds I got worked fairly well, once I got the right rubber tips on them. They stayed in my ears for most of the set, instead of falling out 30 seconds into the first song. Also, my new Ashdown 2x10 combo amp worked well. I ran my 4x10 cab with it, and the drummer said it sounded tighter.
They booked us for more dates, well into next year.

No clubdate this weekend. Instead, I'm playing at a jazz club with a 16 piece big band. Sunday night in the Theater district: a night where there are no shows, therefore no street crowd. And this place is a tourist trap for prices. And did i mention that we're working for the door? Which means the door divided by 16. All donations to the "JGSBASS Bitchin' 'Bout Gigs and Money Fund" are tax deductable and greatly appreciated.
Well Thinking For Tuesday are out gigging again this weekend and are Supporting Die So Fluid at the Railway in Winchester!

Heading out for one of our regular club gigs in our hometown tonight. Tomorrow, we take it on the road to Akron OH where we headline the grand opening of a new club.
ok first off, here's a funny review of the show i did 2 weekends ago with The Dexter Street Stompers, the KEXP "House" jug band.

The funniest part about that review.. the reviewer never came to our show! Also, we didn't do "Whole Lotta Love", but have since worked that one up.
Last weekend, The Dexter Street Stompers played two gigs down in Portland, OR. Saturday night was at a house party.. was a fun time, and many cute girls (but sadly no pictures to prove it). Sunday we played at the Oktober Fest held at McMenamins Edgefield resort. Tons of great bands, good brews, and tasty food. We played two sets, an hour each, in the Herb Garden, which was a lovely location.
Upcoming this weekend, Spare Rib & The Bluegrass Sauce are playing a big show on Friday night, at the Sunset Tavern in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. One of my favorite mid-sized venues in town. Should be a great night, as we've got a lot of surprises in store for our fans (bunch of special guests, an artist painting live on stage while we play, and a great opener act - Squirrel Butter, which features members of The Tall Boys and Appalachia-style clogging to claw-hammer banjo).
The next night, saturday, we'll be playing back up in the mountains for the Friends of Heybrook celebration party in the town of Index, WA. The local community was able to raise enough funds to purchase 100+ acres of old growth forest that slated to be clearcut, and now will be turned into a public trail system and eco-educational center. This gig should be a fun time, as the town of Index just loves our band (last time we played up there, the town council had to have an emergency meeting to extend the "noise curfew" by an extra hour so that we could play a 3rd set and keep the people dancing in the streets. also helped that our Mandolin picker is on the town council.

I've had my Trace Elliot Twin head in the shop for a while, and meaning to go pick it up, so as the repair place is near the venue I figured I'd grab it on the way, and use it. The Trace isn't my regular gig amp, but thought it would be fun to use it - I took the regular rig too just in case.
Got the amp - all shiny and cleaned out inside. Looked great. Plugged in. Sounded a bit fuzzy at first, but once it got warmed up it was sounding killer, until the very last song when it started making some nasty noises :-(
Oh well - back to the shop it goes. The guy is usually really good, so I'm sure he'll sort it. Fortunatly it was the last song, so it didn't matter (hooking up the spare under preasure would be a pain). It's actually a good thing, as if I hadn't found the problem it might have been several months before I put it under preasure for a few hours, to find the problem.

Tonight we are playing a private birthday party for the mother of a friend. Last I heard, 80 guests had RSVP'd. It's at our local Country Club and has a cash bar, so the liquor will be flowing. Promises to be a fun evening. This will be our first gig with our new lead guitarist; we've been getting him up to speed for the last couple of weeks. The crowd will be comprised of mostly mid-forties to mid-sixties - MY PEOPLE!

Heading out in just a few minutes to play the Atwood Lake Fall Festival.......kind of an Octoberfest type event......outdoors, food, crafts, etc. Played the last 2 or 3 years, always a huge crowd. I'll be home by 6 PM or so, and get to enjoy a rare Saturday night off, hanging out with my family. 
Down to no money once: sucky clubowner cancelled us out of the afternoon gig ( it only costs him 2 boxes of ziti and some red sauce and cheese for the band, we work for the cover charge) with barely 24 hours notice. Actually works out better for me. I would be stuck in Manhattans theater district for 5 hours in a tux between jobs. Now I can finish my driveway and watch my daughters soccer game.

Well here's something different for me today.......I'm filling in with a vocal group for an afternoon concert.......I don't get the chance to do much fill in anymore, as my regular bands work enough to keep my schedule full......this will be fun.
