"Check In" here before and after your gigs this weekend!

I'm having the biggest gig I've had in my life and who knows, it might be the biggest I'll ever have.

My band and I aren't professional, we've only had two gigs so far and the whole gigging and music business in Israel is kind of dead. Yet, this hotel that offered us to play for them is going to charge 95nis per ticket (That's ~$30US) which is HUGE. I've seen actually POPULAR Israeli bands for less, lol.

I'm afraid of 2 things. I'm scared it'll be empty.

I'm more scared it'll be full and we end up dead by the end of the evening. :P

Anyhow, it's on the 27th somewhere near the Dead Sea in Israel. If I survive, I'll let you know how it went. :P

We have a "friend of the band" whose band has a gig tonight. I have sat in with her before when she was opening for us and was invited to do so again for this evening on her gig. No rehearsal and I only know one member of the group. This is gonna RULE!

Playing with the group I planned to play with went alright - slightly harder than expected because of lack of monitors and trying to play another person's originals by ear without no rehearsal (I'd done it before with no problems, but with monitors).

BUT I was also asked to sit in with an earlier player. His performance was quite good, but we didn't mesh well, and again, lack of monitors caused some conflict. I'll be generous and say that we sounded "pretty good" on two songs, and the rest was a train wreck. That said, "pretty good" on 2 out of 6 songs with someone I'd never played with before, hadn't met until 5 minutes before tuning up and playing, and couldn't hear very well - not too shameful.

If it had been a paying gig, I'd have set my standards higher.

Just finished up my casino gig tonight, same gig tomorrow.......right on the casino floor, among the video slots.....strange setup, but we always have a good crowd hanging with the band.....tonight was no exception. Always fun to see a bunch of drunk gamblers dancing around like crazy people. :p

20 hours to go the the biggest gig of my life. The people who arranged this gig charge 30 US dollars per ticket and we're the only band that plays. They never heard us, nobody ever heard us, they just got our number from some random guy.


2 things might happen:

A) Nobody comes
1) Alright.

B) Many people come
1) They like us and all is fine
2) They kill us because the bloody ticket is ~half the price of a Metallica ticket.


We're so dead. I need to bring something to protect my amplifier. D:

Majorly big show tomorrow night, but I'm quite confident. Rehearsals went fairly smoothly today, some minor bumps, nothing that cant be fixed by tomorrow. Bringing along a fairly big set up: Mesa Big Block 750 Head, 2 4x10 cabs and one 4x12, 2 of my Ibanez SR 700's, and A Stingray as well as ALOT of cable. Quite nervous about that. More Gear=more stuff that can go wrong/an or break:eek:. But its all manageable and everything has a backup.:smug:
So it should all be good

halloween gig last night.

a few notes.

There were 4 bands total. Headling was big D and the kids table. Now our band is very close with big D ( grew up together, same location and so on) BUT the very first opening band, Sonic Boom Six from England friggen ROCKED. Dont know if you have heard of them, but they were great.

I would say close to 500 people showed up. We played at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA ( downstairs)

It was a blast! when pics come up, i will post them.

So two days to go before my tour subbing gig was to start, and i get a call from the frontman saying that he decided that the band would rather play bass-less for the first leg of the tour that i was going to cover.. kinda lame, after a week of learning this guy's 30+ tunes for 8 hours a day, only to find out at the one and only rehearsal before hitting the road that the frontman changed the setlists from what i was given and adding a bunch of tunes i didn't have recordings of, nor charts for. No worries, I've got a great ear and know how to fake it if need be... but whatever, it was his choice, and i was only trying help out a fellow bassist buddy who needed a quick replacement. So, instead i took the 2 weeks i had already taken off from work and headed down to LA to jam & record with friends i hadn't seen in years.. good times indeed had instead.

got back into town on saturday, just in time to play a gig with half my bluegrass band + 8 others is a crazy one-off jam band (1 mandolin, 4 guitars, 1 drummer, 2 bassists, 1 flutist, 3 vocalists). fun and chaotic at the same time! (really made our soundman work for his money that night).

tonight i'm recording with The Dexter Street Stompers, the KEXP "Roadhouse" show's Jug "house band". Hopefully we can record 3-4 songs tonight, mix & master done by wednesday, and off to the presses by friday.. all in the hopes that we can have 7in vinyl EPs in our hands by 11/29 Release Party (yeah lets book our release party before we even record! ha!)

Well, My group is kinda new/old. i have played with 4 of the 5 in the group and we are having our first rehearsal in 2 weeks. It is really exciting for us as we all had "retired" from the music scene for the last 10 years except for playing in church. We have attended/played at open mics to see what the response would be and it has been positive. We are now going to take it to the next level and get the "weekend warrior" thing going--from there, who knows? I will let you know how it turns out. We have two female drummers, one talented female vocalist and 2 extreme guitarist and me on bass. The attraction will be those hot femaile in the group but hey, when they hear us, they will scream!

We'll be having a defining moment this Saturday. The gig is at a Ruritan club in a little town out in VA. Here's why it'll be interesting.
I gave my notice last Saturday. I'm moving on to a new band. This prompted an exchange of nasty-grams between the female singer and the bandleader on Tuesday, which ended with the singer giving her notice. Her close friend, the keyboard player, has already been having a beef with the bandleader, since a blowout in the summer. The two of them will no doubt be extra grumpy now. I'm guessing neither will feel any need to be polite, ha ha.
Saturday will be the first gig since these nasty-grams. We'll see who can remain professional, and who will have a meltdown. I'd really like to finish out the gigs I have with them, into December. I need the money. But at the moment, I'm not counting on it... better wait a while for those new strings... :rolleyes:

I'm glad to report that I was overly pessimistic. The three of them have patched things up enough to get through the gig w/no meltdowns. We went over very well with the crowd.
Thank goodness for small miracles!
