If you don't already have a P bass, personally I'd do that first.
If you do have a P then the T40 would be cool.
The T40 had a great tone control that would take it from single coil to humbucking as you turned it down.
You will want the wiring diagram for the T45 (single pickup version of the T40) if you go the T40 pickup direction.

That said I think I’ll t40 swap, I loved it a whole bunch and it was my only player for a while, I switched to a pbass for the weight. Now I’ve got a bit of both worlds
Pawn shops are a "hagglers" dream. Pretty much all pawn shops price things so far above what they are willing to take that it is almost criminal. The way pawn sellers work is based upon an age old marketing principle. That principle being that you can always lower your price but you can't go up, so ask for the moon. Anyone who pays what a pawn shop is asking is a sucker. And pawn shops make most of their profit from suckers. They count on it. That is how they stay in business. That and the fact that very few people who pawn their items at ten cents on the dollar ever come back to claim them. And far fewer of those who pawn goods ever come back because they are fencing stolen goods. That is the dirty little secret of the pawn broker industry. It has always been that way. My guess is that it will continue to be so. Why? It is just not a big focus for prosecutors. That and the fact that pawn shops have been the go to for information by police.
My recommendation is that if you are looking to do a deal at a pawn shop, don't keep your own personal ethics in play. Throw them out the window and play the game. Offer them twenty-five cents on the dollar as a starting point and go from there.

I wouldn't pay more than $80 considering you need new pickups, pickguard and likely new electronics. If those things were abused.by the previous owner then the neck may need some work, too.

My plans for this will be - a fat humbucker mounted in that hole, and sanding the black paint down to natura woodl, and maybe a black pickguard down the road but for now I’ll just paint it matte black. Then I’ll get it all setup and probably play it a lot, I don’t think I’d sell it.

I was in the "$100 tops" camp. After thinking about it, I'd leave it and wait for something better to surface.
Bill Lawrence designed that pickup for Peavey, it’s great sounding. I’d research the T45 for pickup placement and harmonic location under the strings. The “T” means Todd, for Chip Todd who designed the actual T40, T45 basses and T60 guitar. They were originally called CT. Good luck!
You never know what's under the paint...
If the paint is salvageable you might just want to polish it. You can use compounds to remove light scratches
The paint is for sure not salvageable. it’s already messed up in a few spots and someone’s done some ugly touch ups, and if the wood beneath is hideous it’ll only be fitting, and I could always repaint
my first bass same model and color. neck warped though. ended up with a foundation as a replacement from the music store.

I have a Sterling SUB Ray 4 and a Sub Ray 5 on layaway for a total of $249. The 4 comes home on Friday, the Ray 5 I have until the end of March to pay off. Some prawn shops are better than others. I bought my SVT-3 Pro for $299 and my GK 800RB for a bit over $250, but I've been stuck a couple times, too. Gotta research whether that great deal really is or not.
This. Keep the original guard and get a large format pickup to cover it up. Rout a swimming pool into the body for any future experiments.
This is true. A mid to late 80s Peavey Fury started life as a well made, mid level bass that was brand shamed/bargained binned through the late 90s/early 2000s and now is recognized for the bang for the buck quality it always had. 80s ones are rising in value to a hefty $250-300 zone! Those comparison basses were $200 (new) entry level basses from the get go.
If I came across that bass, I would have done the same thing by haggling it down to as close to $100 as possible. It's a solid platform for making an interesting player bass. I have a Super Ferrite and pickup ring laying around, I would be tempted to drop that in there and have a virtual single coil P bass/1st gen G&L SB-1.It really is hard to go too far wrong with a US made Peavey.
Being a hot rodder, I'd be very tempted to hack the PG further and add a larger pickup.
Dark Star, MM, mudbucker, double J... hey a VFL would 'keep it in the family'!
Lots of choices there.
Don't overlook pickups that use a mounting ring.
They can hide gaps.
Going down that road probably means not having the option of breaking even on a resale,
but does open the door to an interesting player.
The world doesn't necessarily need another P bass derivative, but can always use a resurrection from a low-to-no budget hack job. No harm done modding a split coil Fury.
I did this to a $75 80s Ibanez RB630. Got a replacement guard, a T40 pickup, P knobs and Wilde Q filter. Push/pull coil split on the tone control. Virtual T45. Sounds and plays like a boss.
