So what Indian food do you normally go for? (I'm Indian so when someone mentions Indian food, I gotta talk grub).

I keep a vegetarian kitchen at home but am flex when I go out (I don't eat pork and beef). And though I love hotly spiced food, my favorite Indian food (and favorite food in general) is good ol' tandoori chicken. And I love anything paneer. Saag paneer is the stuff!

I'm simultaneously well aware of how fast the year has gone and yet struck by the fact that tomorrow is somehow already Christmas. Doesn't feel like it's quite yet time for it.

We're staying in this year. Typically we travel to see the wife's family, but we caught them earlier this month and decided that was "good enough." We will probably get Italian takeout for tonight and then Chinese tomorrow. We just moved into our new home on the 2nd, so we're still getting into the swing of things.

My parents lived in south India / Cochin / Kerala so I lean towards the vindaloos and stuff NOT fabricated for the English colonists. Large Christian and carnivore population! There is nothing I won't eat, even the vegan dishes....the spiced lentil dishes are my favorite with the dosas a close second. I also enjoy the lamb and goat. Susan will only eat the shrimp korma, no spice whatsoever. Same joint used to do a killer lunch buffet but discontinued as they said there was too much waste. Here's the menu:

First Christmas without dad , he died this past August.
Possibly last with mom , but I think she'll have more.
Wife's dad has been gone , mom is old.
Watching the first round of grandkids hit teenage years , wow.
We've 8 kids , ten grandkids and two on the way.

I'm not a lonely man. I am grateful for what I have , what I've achieved , and family.

Life's been mostly good so far. Plenty of ups, plenty of downs. I've been depressed lately, but I know what it is and I deal.

Hope all is well for everyone.

I haven't scrooged out, but I just did NOT feel it this year. I am thankful and lucky for many things, but if I'd have fell asleep in the middle of November and woke up a few days after New Year's, it would have been fine with me.

Regardless,

Merry Christmas, and My Best to all of You and Yours.

Siiiiiick menu!

My family's South Indian. My mom's from Kerala (she grew up outside of Trivandrum) and my dad's from Tamil Nadu (Chennai). I'm all about that idli and dosa life. The area I work at in southern New Jersey has a massive South Indian population, so the Indian grocery store there has all the snacks my dad (RIP) loved, and there's a new-ish restaurant called Amma's that specializes in South Indian food. And dosa is on trend, like, everywhere.

Sorry...should have referred as "Kochi". There's a handful here, most with the last name "Thomas". We have a restaurant across town that specializes in street food including the dosas. Re: snack food > used to get these rice chex looking squares that we chowed in hot oil...really good but really salty. I rarely see idli offered.

Pop worked for Apollo Tyres. He designed ADV (animal driven vehicle) tires for the bullock carts and such.

our Christmas plans are low key. My dad passed away on the 19th, we are all sad, rest of family is scattered or with in-laws, so it's a different one this year. Meeting my daughter for Chinese food tomorrow. Nice break from cooking big meals. I need to practice some, our gig starts back in January. I won't have any help from 'jack Daniels' maybe some from Absolute!

My kids are now young adults with significant others. -- and one is on her last trimester We have always snowboarded or ski on my son's birthday which is on the 27th. My wife asked me to help these SO's and their siblings and parents learn to ski and basically help run the mini ski vacation which will be bigger this year. I typically don't like to ski during the Christmas holidays. Too many people on the slopes is a crazy time.

I did record with a group earlier today and it was shrooms assisted.

Me and my wife do more intentional inner things on Solstice -- Christmas eve and Christmas day is with family. Lack of young ones means the carols are R rated lyric wise and that was fun. I think everyone was on some sort of cannabis or drink this evening

South Indian of course, Was my favorite when I lived in India -- I guess was a treat since I did not live in South India . I am still mostly vegetarian , my wife started eating meat and my son was the last to turn when he started dating this Vietnamese girl - oh well. You can bribe my wife with Saag Paneer anytime, This evening at my mother in laws party, I went to the South Indian restaurant and got me some Podi Dosa and Sambar Idli. Of course the meat eaters had to eat most of it. I got half an Idli and 2 inches of the dosa and a teaspoon of the coconut chutney.

It's that time of year. Christmas is upon us once again

Or, if you prefer, and I don't want to leave anyone out of these end of the year celebrations: Happy Winter Solstice, Saturnalia, Kwanzaa, Yule, Mōdraniht, Dong Zhi, Shab-e Yalda, Soyal, Hogmanay, St. Lucia's Day, and my favorite-name for an end-of-the-year celebration: Dies Natalis Solis Invicti (Birthday of the Unconquered Sun)

Do you have any big plans this season? Any big plans foisted upon you that you are now committed to? Perhaps instead you get to relax?

Happy Holidays to all of you here on TalkBass 🎄
I have 11 days off. We have several fams who don't have biofam nearby eating with us Christmas dinner. We have company the 1st week of January. Otherwise just chilling. Bike rides, bass, friends.

Aloo mutter is my go to, spicy as can be. I believe that is Northern Indian.

Sorry about your dad, I buried my dad 2 days ago. I know how you feel. My mom is 90 and struggles to do anything. I live out of town from family. Which adds its own issues. Same with depression. Mine is more regrets and mistakes I made. Life is good. A man told me that "all days are good, some are better". Which is true. I have done IT & support in a hospital for 25 years. some patient-care areas, some critical care. seeing patients; children included, really sick, Makes my perspective on life a little different.

I absolutely LOVE that there's a side discussion going on about Indian food.

On a few other forums/online hangouts, the moment someone casually slips Indian food into the conversation, everyone tangents off into it.

And why not? Indian food is effin' delicious!

(I made basic ol' pancakes this morning for Xmas breakfast. I had sour cream and vanilla extract left over from when I attempted to bake a bourbon-vanilla-maple cake yesterday, so I put that in my pancake batter for fluffy, flavorful pancakes. And I'm in the process of making baked potatoes for lunch).
