Since Jimmy's pre is SO transparent with the bass and treble flat, engaging the pre pretty much does the same thing as that 'Redeemer' thing... pure buffering with very little added tonal change. However, the buffering really does change the nature of the thing, and does remove some of that gruntiness that you get from the pickup loading, etc.

I'm not as persnickety as some folks are regarding passive overrides on basses with preamps (for example, unlike a lot of people, I actually do like to play a Sadowsky in passive mode... not just rescue-only for me), but I will say the LG is probably my favorite to play passively.

I think it also has a lot to do with Jimmy's pickup faithfulness. Given different pickups not as faithful to the original sound, I'm not totally sure I'd feel as strongly about this.

+1 My LG is the only bass I've owned in 25 years that sounds better to me passive than active (and it sounds darn good active). I never use passive mode on my other instruments.

I think there is a reason why SO many of the 70's era J's seemed to be modified with preamps, versus most 60's era J's, which seemed to stay passive through their whole lifetime with most owners.

As usual, an insightful and informative discussion regarding the pre and buffering. Thanks you guys, I won't be so quick to engage the pre. Also I'm diggin the nickel lo riders on the LG Ken per your advice. Salud.

Yup, this is the same reason that I did not even opt for a preamp on my '60s style Nordy VJ5 Classic. It just nails that vibe right out of the box, without a preamp. I kind of like Ken's idea of rewiring my LG4 to default to passive.

Another point of interest in the active/passive discussion is that with some all-tube heads, there is a certain magic in the interaction with a passive instrument, especially when you have the gain set just so... :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :cool:

Hey, here's my LG-5 classic sunburst, it was Jimmys showroom bass that i bought from him 3 months ago, very light weight ,made in 2008, been on tour this mars/april and been using this one and my '56 p-bass and my '64 jazz, actually now i'm only playing the LG-5:) i'm also thinking of a rewiring as i only play in passive mode,also a pic from the tour with LG-5, '56 p-bass and my Bjarton double bass.
