Had an RA for a while. Jason, I don't think you ever got to play my CAR one. Nice bass, but not for me. Not quite as warm as the LG down low, very sizzly up top (like Celinder sizzly), but not the grindy upper mids that define the LM. Great tone, but I'm pretty sure you made the right choice with the LM for your playing style. I either want the warm growl of a 60's style bass, or the aggressive grind of a 70's style bass if I'm playing a J. IMO there, but we tend to hear things similarly, and have relatively similar tone goals.

Lots of great choices for every playing style from Jimmy.

+1...I'm still sure that the LM is #1 for my tonal goals, but I have a feeling that I'll eventually end up getting another AC or two to go along with it!

Well, while that's always good if you can afford it, and while I did like the RA's I played at NAMM better than Ken liked his, I agree with Ken you made the right choice. IMHO, the LM is just "the formula" for that sound... just like the LG is "the formula" for its sound. No offense to the folks that like the RA best of course. No doubt, fantastic basses, and you could probably have less trouble with Jimmy getting one of those a bit lighter than an LM if you were looking for less filling while still tasting great in a 70's-ish spec. :)

Hey guys string question.

As you all know my LG5 with Honduran board is a mid monster. I've used this bass for the last two years as my primary gigging bass. I've always wanted to find a nickel set that really works for this bass but always end up back with a set of hi beams. The hi beams seem to tame those mids just enough to give it a great SS tone. What I would really love to do is use nickels on the LG but every attempt has been a bass that is very mid happy. Great for fingerstyle but not all that great for slap playing.

Can anyone recommend a nickel string with a slight mid scoop?

Now that I've got the LM it's giving me more time to play around with the LG a bit. I have a set of TIs on her now, a set of low rider stainless and hi beams in the draw. I also just ordered a set of Jimmy's nickels.

I would think DR SunBeams would be in order to at least try out.

I would point you in the direction of Sadowsky Nickels. Either standard or standard light.

:hyper:Hey guys I had a couple of questions about the LM5 Deluxe.

Does anyone out there have an LM5 Deluxe (blocks) with a micro-tilt maple neck-sort of baseball home bass design neck plate) ? If so would you be so kind as to post a few pics..actually any photos of any LM would suffice big time..Thanks

I spoke to Jimmy 2 months ago on this and he said that he no longer does this as he feels the sound was a bit more compressed with the micro-tilt feature.

2 more questions before I take the "plunge" please.
I should soon be getting my hands on a LM Deluxe 5 !!!!!

1. What was the price of say the Red LG5 and Sea Foam LG5 that both have pix on the forum from Jimmy's former NYC shop in 2008 ?

2. Now on a more controversial query--Wadda you guys think of an AC PJ set-up ? It should be do-able especially with a talented luthier like Jimmy ( he even has the pick-ups already ) and likely very do-able, especially on the controversially anticipated new CNC machine ??

Pete, Jimmy's nickels sound great, and if you haven't tried DR sunbeams, they're the warmest rounds I've ever played....

Really? I hadn't heard yet that he'd found a hum canceling J he was happy with?

..and likely very do-able, especially on the controversially anticipated new CNC machine ??

Actually, this is unrelated. Jimmy can do a PJ body without the CNC without any problem.

Jimmy is not gonna find an off the shelf hum free J that he likes... since he makes all his own Pups from scratch in house...

He has a few ideas and will be sending me some prototypes in a few months.. He just doesn't have the time to devote to actually start something new right now
When we were working out the J pups for the 4 and 5 string basses it took a while and many FedEx shipments to settle on what we (Jason, Jimmy and me) liked and are in the basses these days..
But as soon as he gets time there will be a Hum canceled J pup in 4 string coming.. 5 string is a little more tricky.

This sounds more like the last status I heard. Bottom line is, Jimmy doesn't currently have a hum canceling J he's happy with, so no PJ model yet.

+1 to the above recommendation. Sun Beams are literally the nickel version of Hi Beams. Too soft feeling for me and a bit too polite all around (I greatly prefer the Lo Rider Nickels). However, if you are looking for tension even lower than the Hi Beams, and that polite mid response of the Hi Beams but without the extended upper treble, they might work for you.

I tell you what, I like that black with black blocks and binding and maple neck spec. Whew.... LM max there!
