lol hopefully it is very soon...just waiting on the neck to get back from paint and then he can throw it together.

I can't wait to see my bass - I haven't seen and AC with the look that I ordered (LM5 with 3TS and blocks/binding), not sure if Jimmy has done one or not. I think it's gonna look great!

Are the blocks and binding already done, or is that being done now as well as the actual finish right now? The reason I ask is, he told me a while back that the guy that does the blocks/binding is not only superb, but also kinda' slow (maybe because of that.) If that's the case, just try to mentally prepare for some extra time. How much, Jimmy should be able to forecast, I'd think.

I actually don't know, I was assuming that they were already done but maybe not. I'm sure Yohann knows though - he did some sanding work on my neck before it was sent out to paint.

If it went out to finish, the blocks at least should be done. I think that's the way it works, with the finish covering the blocks, and then the frets and binding put on after. I think!?!?!?

Yes, the finish should be done after the blocks are already on the bass. Waiting on delivery of one of my basses I sent out for blocks to another Luthier which should arrive by Monday. It took 7 weeks for my blocks and finish to get done so all the guys that apply blocks must be slowwww....what a long wait!

Hang on, folks... don't misunderstand me. OBVIOUSLY the finish is done after the blocks/binding are done. That's not at all where I'm going with this.

Again, he has BOTH processes done out of house, so it could possibly be that it's first stop is the B/B and then the last stop the finish shop (if they are not one and the same... another thing I don't know.)

Good plan to simply ask YCbass or Jimmy. At the end of the day, that's all I'm really suggesting.

Just trying to help you try and make sure your expectation is appropriate for how much time you actually have left. I know how frustrating it can be to have a special piece like this on the way and find out it's gonna' be longer than you expected. :)

+1...Jimmy told me it was going out to paint with a batch that is being done by his finish guy on last Monday, didn't mention anything about going to blocks and binding. (I think jonno's bass is in that same batch.) So unless Jimmy has the same guy doing both finishes and blocks then I would think that part is already done.

Is the finish actually done before the binding? Just curious. I thought the blocks were put in, then the clear finish, then the frets, then the binding over the fret ends.

I don't have a clue. Again, more just curious, since I never thought about it. Or is the finish the last thing to be done, after frets, blocks and binding?

Last step in the process, I believe.

My LG5 had nitro over the joint between where the binding and neck joined together. Nitro all the way to the edge of the binding.

Blocks and binding are done in house... Jimmy hasn't outsourced that since I met him.

And to Vic's question...
1. The inlays and binding are put in.
2. Then the binding is scraped and leveled.
3. Neck sanded.
4. Fingerboard trued.
5. Then the frets (the part that digs into the fretboard - I forget the name) are cut a bit shorter to fit within the binding.
6. Then the whole thing is sprayed and Jimmy scrapes the finish off the frets for the final fret job.

Hope that helps.

And to Jonno, your bass was hand delivered to the painter so it's just a matter of time now.

Cool! How far along is your LM5 Yohann? It should be getting pretty close now right?

The body is done (it was my sanding training piece), I picked up a new batch of necks from the lumberyard last week and have a piece picked out, hoping to get it cut next week... But I ain't holding my breath with NAMM on the way... Latest estimate is NAMM.

So for those who may think I (we, including Kirk and Jason) get special treatment... There you go, hahaha. By NAMM, it would be 15 months since my order. :D
I don't have a 5'er right now and need one so I may need to get something to gig with til the day comes.
