Good points... Then I think this is where "Custom" comes into play. Like mine would be an LM Custom.
But actually in the case of Ken's ex-RA5... How could anyone but Jimmy know? Since it's a solid color and no blocks and binding. It's not like the model name is stamped anywhere y'know? That's one of those situations where you just call with the serial number and find out. And that trans blue that Gil has now is the same situation as mine.
In the case of the LowEnd, he should've done his research and listed the right model names... Call Jimmy if he had to. Brian has been around basses long enough that he should've known Ken's old bass didn't sound like Ash. No offense to Brian, he's a great guy.
So point is, yes the model names can be confusing... HAHAHAHA.
This is exactly the issue...What if the bass pops up on TB or Bassgear or eBay for that matter and Jimmy isnt available to answer your question in a timely manner do you just roll the dice and buy or do you pass on it out of fear of the unknown?

Agreed, this is an issue - but hardly one specific to Jimmy's basses. Honestly, if the price is low enough you roll the dice. If the price is reasonable you've likely got time to do due diligence. That's what you'd do for any other bass in this price range, correct?
Look, I'm not trying to say that Jimmy's business model is perfect, but he's experiencing massive growth, and the growing pains that go along with it. This undoubtedly has an effect on the time he has available for casual chatter - remember, as generous as he is (or at least has been with me) with his time when discussing instruments, buying a used instrument certainly doesn't advance his interests to any great degree. I think more realistic expectations are in order, and in point of fact if someone is that worried about the specs of their prospective instrument, then they should be prepared to pay for a new bass. I don't think it's fair to blame Jimmy for any misrepresentation of used instruments.
yo man, i know you were talking tone before with this thing and i mentioned pickups. another tb'r pm'd me some questions about pickups because he wasnt completely satisfied with his lg5. he took the resistance ratings and those suckers are hot. that would explain some of the lack of sparkle you might have been experiencing.
at this point you might absolutely love the sound of it though!
Better late than never. I do need to take some new pics though. Other than an old '72 franken Fender pj I've sold all my other basses. Haven't bought another bass since I got the kbp-5 in 2008, although I've gassed for an lm-5 since I changed my order from an lm-5 to the kbp-5.

#2 I keep thinking of trading her for an lm-5 or a Sadowsky ash maple 5. Then I play her and decide not so much. More lines on the maple neck than any guitar or bass neck I've ever seen.

Lovely. Big fan of the natural finish/tort guard on this. This is a bass I would love to try, just to get a feel for the ash/rosewood combo. It sure looks like it should sound awesome...
I like that one a lot. Beautiful... perfect look. I've played a few ash/RW Sadowsky basses and that is just a great combination. Don't dig alder/maple at all myself (pure personal taste there.. it of course sounds great in its own way), but the yin yang of that really does sound more like 'in between an LG and LM to my ear (again, based on my Sadowsky experience.
I love those old NYC shop pictures like a few posts above. Here is the picture I saw on the web a number of years ago that resulted in me taking the A-C plunge... my Harvest Gold LM.
Also, per the above discussion, Jimmy was VERY helpful when I purchased the two used A-C's a while back (the LG I have, and the RA that I eventually sold to another TBer who loves it).
