lol I told him that night that Vic would kill us if we don't post a clip! But seriously - those two basses sounded about as identical as any two basses I've ever played back to back.

I have gear at my house that I can use to record (it would be direct though) but it isn't set up at the moment. I'll try to record something in the next week and post it up.

+1 also that I find it easier to mellow out my LM than the 'grind up' my LG.

410UL...I didn't want to break out the S212 for the first time during a service just in case the absolute volume wasn't enough for the room. But I'm gonna bring it tomorrow night for a rehearsal and A/B it with the 410UL while in a mix - that'll be fun!

In all honesty, just to clarify, I'm not trying to learn anything here, so a reference clip is irrelevant. I just wanna' hear you play your new bass. If that's a bigger deal than I'm imagining, I'll quit bugging you guys about it.

I guess I have a few comments since I post so many 'review clips'.

1) No offense, but if you suck on clips, then you most likely suck. A recording doesn't lie, and the absolute BEST way to gauge and evaluate your playing (time, execution, feel, etc.) is to record clips solo with no drum tracks or click. Man (as unfortunately some of my clips show), that will lay bare technique and especially time problems. Whether you eventually upload to Youtube or not is a separate point, but solo recording with no click track is the most brutally honest personal evaluation tool there is... a true 'look in the mirror' moment! The best way to do this is with a 'real time looper' when you practice... instant feedback on time and execution.

2) If you are putting up clips like mine, which are primarily designed to demo equipment versus convey anything of particular musical interest, absolute skill level becomes a moot point, as long as you have the skill to get a good sound out of the instrument.

3) Any performing artist, whether he/she is at my moderate level or at Victor Wooten's level, has to have 'thick skin'. There will always be as many people who think you suck as those who think you are burning, etc., no matter what your skill level.

Just put some out there and have fun These clips really do help some guys with an additional data point when having to 'buy without trying', and also puts your other posts in a meaningful context (i.e., skill level, preferred tone, playing style, etc.). IMO there, and with these high quality recorders, the sound quality is quite amazing and really does communicate the tone of a bass or rig wonderfully. I don't think I've ever done a 'second take' on any clip, and they literally take only minutes to do... just set the rig up, push the button and play! Simple, easy, and at least for some, very useful.

(1) I LOVE that you are so prolific with clips. I'm a youtube subscriber of yours, and check out pretty much everything I come across that you post.

I cannot tell you how appreciative I am of your clips. The more remote you are, the harder it is to try gear in person.

Also helpful is how you tend to play the same in many of the clips; it gives us a baseline for comparing gear.

(2) I also agree with your thick skin recommendation.

Even if we are trying to showcase gear, not chops, someone is always going to miss that point and criticize the playing.

(2) I couldn't agree more that recordings are "brutally honest" tools to help us evaluate our playing skills. I've often been surprised by how bad I suck in my own clips, and therefore very happy to have caught those problems in private so I wouldn't be embarrassing myself unawares at a gig.

(3) However, I'm often struck by how different a bass can sound recorded than it does live in a room.

Of course with your Q3, you are probably capturing the live sound more than the recorded sound anyway, which is another reason I enjoy your clips.

But when a bass is recorded in ways that aren't as true to its live sound, which is usually the case when a bass is professionally recorded as part of an album, it can be a surprise to a buyer who may have bought a bass to have a sound he heard on an album.

So while the recording may not "lie" per se, it can definitely deceive.

(4) And not only can recordings deceive, they CAN actually lie. Probably every modern track is quantized to make the rhythm tighter than the musicians played it, and adjusted to make the vocals (or fretless bass) more in tune than the studio performance was.

But my MAIN POINT is...

(5) Sucking isn't the only reason for having a reluctance for posting clips.

It's just not some people's thing. Here's an analogy to help me say what I'm trying to say.

My wife is gorgeous. I met her when she was 16 years old, and over the years I've seen countless guys stare, drool and even hit on her. The inappropriateness of some things some guys have said and done just boggles the mind.

But even though she has no rational reason for it, she has always hated to see herself in a photo or on video. There is not one that she would be happy with me posting to help me prove my point.

Some people are just that way.

People are just different, that's all.

It's not as cut and dry as sucking or not sucking... some people would just rather not, you know?

Anyway, thanks again for your clips, Ken. You're a good man.

Hey Tom!

Yeah, I only record in a room live with a rig. As you say, direct recordings are not really representative of much from a true 'demo' perspective IMO for most players.

And, +1 about your 'clips don't lie' comment... I was only talking about the raw, live type clips that I put up, versus the more processed 'through the board' or clips as part of a studio recording, which often are sweetened in a lot of ways.

My 'sucking' comment was more of a general statement (not relating to Vic, of course, who I've heard play many times). Again, recording a live clip in a room without a backing track really IS what you sound like, for better or worse. Unless you are an absolutely fantastic player, you will hear (as I am painfully aware of in my clips), rushing, dragging in the time, less that perfect execution, etc., etc. It is a bit disconcerting for a schlubb like me when listening back, but my point is, sometimes you just have to put it out there and basically say 'this is me... this is how I sound... and this is the context in which you should put my TB comments'

This is more applicable to me, as well. It's not rational, it's just... well... I'm weird.
