Ken,
The low light "fix" was a firmware update, and honestly, it didn't really do much (I also have a Q3). FYI on that.

On the clip... COP OUT!!! :bawl:

The main thing for me on the clip deal was I wanted to hear JASON playing his bass. :) Your clip of course is great, but that really doesn't get me there as to what I was looking forward to, and it was mainly about the audio, so crappy video wouldn't bug me at all... so my humble but adamant request is still out there... please oh please oh please... :)

We didn't actually record anything after seeing that the light wasn't good enogh so there's nothing to post.

Vic, you have a Q3 also? Man we need to see some clips from you of alot of the stuff in your collection!

I wonder how many times you write things that really resonate with me... it sure seems to happen a lot, including with this post.

I hate seeing myself in photos, I hate even more seeing myself in videos, and I rarely play anything solo in an audio clip that I want someone else to hear -- especially my bass playing peers. The only reason I do let some clips out into the wild is because I know guys are curious about the instrument.

Of course there are projects and gigs I'm mostly pleased with, but given the talent we frequently see and hear on talkbass I'm quite happy to be quietly pleased. :D

It's like vocals: I'm fine harmonizing and playing a supporting role, but usually not so fine as the lead.

EDIT: Of course, you may not have been saying anything like that -- I was just expressing MY thoughts which were provoked by your post. :-)

The 'better light thing' is in regards to their new model, which has a larger lense and is a totally different box. Again, not sure how much better it is.

Again, not enough motivation for me to spend the $300, since the Q3 is fabulous. I just record in the daytime if I have a rig or bass I want to demo.

Edit: And, Jason is welcome to my Q3 any time to record himself!

I guess I have a few comments since I post so many 'review clips'.

1) No offense, but if you suck on clips, then you most likely suck. A recording doesn't lie, and the absolute BEST way to gauge and evaluate your playing (time, execution, feel, etc.) is to record clips solo with no drum tracks or click. Man (as unfortunately some of my clips show:D), that will lay bare technique and especially time problems. Whether you eventually upload to Youtube or not is a separate point, but solo recording with no click track is the most brutally honest personal evaluation tool there is... a true 'look in the mirror' moment! The best way to do this is with a 'real time looper' when you practice... instant feedback on time and execution.

2) If you are putting up clips like mine, which are primarily designed to demo equipment versus convey anything of particular musical interest, absolute skill level becomes a moot point, as long as you have the skill to get a good sound out of the instrument.

3) Any performing artist, whether he/she is at my moderate level or at Victor Wooten's level, has to have 'thick skin'. There will always be as many people who think you suck as those who think you are burning, etc., no matter what your skill level.

Just put some out there and have fun:) These clips really do help some guys with an additional data point when having to 'buy without trying', and also puts your other posts in a meaningful context (i.e., skill level, preferred tone, playing style, etc.). IMO there, and with these high quality recorders, the sound quality is quite amazing and really does communicate the tone of a bass or rig wonderfully. I don't think I've ever done a 'second take' on any clip, and they literally take only minutes to do... just set the rig up, push the button and play! Simple, easy, and at least for some, very useful.

Seriously though, I was just a touch nervous about Jason's LM, given some of the issues that have been reported over the last year, and the unfortunate 'prototype' executions in the NAMM booth last year. I'll tell you what, it is just perfect, and EVERY bit as good (actually virtually identical in feel and tone) to my early NYC LM. I'm back on the Jimmy bandwagon all the way based on this execution!

As far as I know, Ken is right in that my body is the older style. That's what Jimmy told me back when the body was being sanded. But I don't know how subtle of a difference there is - we had to look HARD comparing his LM and mine to see the slight difference in the new headstock.

Yep, that's what I was thinking.

The LM5 absolutely KILLED in church yesterday...it was my first time playing it on stage with Hi Beams, and it was just smokin. I often play in service using left hand muting (I suck at thumb/palm muting) for slower songs - and I've never heard anything sound as articulate doing that as the LM. I just love the way that you can mellow out the grind in that bass when you want to, and then when you're ready you can just unleash it!

Cool! Did you use the S212 or the 410UL?

+1 also that I find it easier to mellow out my LM than the 'grind up' my LG.

lol I told him that night that Vic would kill us if we don't post a clip! But seriously - those two basses sounded about as identical as any two basses I've ever played back to back.

I have gear at my house that I can use to record (it would be direct though) but it isn't set up at the moment. I'll try to record something in the next week and post it up.
