Fun hang as usual! Both of the LM5's sounded absolutely killer through the Berg AE cabs. I played with different preamp settings on both and they sound pretty much identical, the only difference being that I just put new Hi Beams on mine so it had a bit more zingyness. The main things I noticed that distinguishes these basses from eveything else I've tried were there in both - extremely even from the G string down to the B, grindy aggressivenesss in the upper mids, very comfortable neck that is wide accross the fretboard and shallow front to back, and the ability to mellow out the aggressive grind when you need to with the passive tone. And man, both those basses just sound funky as heck - fingerstyle or slap!

My video recorder IS my audio recorder:) It does a beautiful job, but needs full light.

The good news is, if you've heard my LM clips on Youtube, you literally have also heard Jason's bass. Amazing sounding 70's style J bass, and IMO and IME, much better than the 'originals'.

I've played a number of LG's, and they were all quite similar in tone, but wasn't sure again if my slightly lighter weight LM was representative of what Jimmy is currently making. Good to know it is for those interested in an LM (i.e., that all those LM clips I have up are seemingly representative of this model in general). Cool! Fabulous execution of this spec IMO.

One more comment. The 'new' headstock style (assuming Jason's is representative of the current design) is VERY subtle. It took us quite a while to notice what Jimmy had done. The size and shape of the headstock has not changed, but there is a slight shift to the angle of the headstock relative to the neck. The A-C decal is now parallel to the strings, versus being on a slight angle.

So, kind of a 'you have to look for it' to notice it. From a design point of view, the change makes sense.

The other slight differences we noticed were that the 'string bar' was closer to the nut, so that you can get easy access to the 'bullet' truss rod adjuster at the headstock (given the one piece neck), and the transition from the headstock to the neck was smoother and rounder, versus the slight carved angled valute on mine.

Finally, I believe Jason's is a bit of a hybrid, with the new headstock design and one piece neck, but the original body design (versus the slightly larger but slightly thinner current LM body). Jason can correct me if I'm wrong on that one, but I did not notice a difference between the two bodies.

Just for the heck of it, I found an LM clip that I recorded relatively recently that I never uploaded. Since we are talking about LM's over the last page or two of the thread, here's another 'data point' for that model.

The clip was meant primarily to demo the amazing Thunderchild 112, but it also does a good job IMO communicating the 'flat' tone of the LM (i.e., preamp engaged with no boost) through a reasonably transparent and clean/accurate rig (also set totally flat).

The amp is the Markbass F500, strings are well broken in DR Hi Beams (funny how I've grown to actually hate the 'new string sizzle' that I loved for all those years!).

No need to touch any knobs going from fingerstyle to slap on these beauties, although on the gig, I would typically have just a bit of the on-board bass boost dialed in.

We spent most of the time last night with the Berg AE's, since those are cabs Jason is considering purchasing, but the little Thunderchild killed in its own way. Notice how 'off axis' the recording location is, and yet how even the tone is through the upper mids and treble... pretty nice design.

FYI, as a kind of proxy for what we were hearing last night (minus the scotch!):D

Zoom Q3. It does a wonderful job. VERY high quality audio (even the internal mics are quite good), and good video quality if you have a decent light source.

The newer Zoom model supposedly improves the quality and capability of video recording in lower light, but haven't really been motivated to spend the cash.

I think they even make an HD version of this now.
IIRC, the one Ken has is ~$199, the newer HD model about $299.
Even with the HD model, you can still shoot a whole show onto one bigger card....

I think that was the one I was talking about. They did something to it to allow for better quality in lower light conditions (supposedly). And +1, memory cards have gotten cheap!!! Almost unlimited recording time at this point.

If they ever come out with a Zoom with a gosh darn pause button, I'll upgrade.

Amazing stuff now for even a 'recording clueless' guy like me to be able to put up clips that sound very close to the live sound by spending a couple hundred dollars and pushing a button:bassist:

Thanks guys its been a long road and many many trials for me to completely realize what I want and need in tone,feel and aesthetics for my collection...

I will definitely have to get a group shot together real soon...

Hey Jonno,

Per the above post, the lighting was much too dark to shoot anything last night with my Q3, unfortunately. We had fun though, and all the basses (the A-C's, Steve's Sadowsky) sounded great, as did the rigs. Fun time. We rarely get together anymore in the Detroit area, so this was a rare treat for me.

Jason's bass is a GOOD one!

As a very satisfied Sadowsky user I must comment. Jason's Bass killed,, but then again the Red Wine prototype I played last year was the most impressive bass for me at NAMM. And even though it was too heavy for me I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one of Jimmy's fine instruments to anyone. The hang was cool, I also learned that, Pizzapopilis is still the best deep dish pizza, And both Don and I agreed that Ken and Jason have an unhealthy obsession with G-strings.:D

I played it today at church. Man, it sounds big. I'm a finger player, so I wanna feel boom...and it boomed! Lol I thought it would be zingy with maple board, but happy it's not. Nice punch & growl. I'm thinking about putting some FatBeams on it. It has nickels on it now, thought hi beams, but seem a lil stiff for them. The RA is a winner right now. Can't wait for my LG5 and also gassing for a KBP5. Lol
