+1 The primary difference between Jasons LM5 and mine is that his is the 'one piece neck' and mine has a board. Even with his being just slightly heavier than mine, the tone was about as similar as any two basses I've ever A/B'd.

My guess is, making a neck with a separate board is a bit more straightforward than getting a one piece neck right... just guessing there though.

Do you remember me from a couple of years ago- I had wrote that a particular AC LG5 I played didn't have as much "punch" as I would expected from a high end bass. Well, I got to play before a performance and hear in concert another LG5 bass owned by Ryan Owens from the Robbie Seay Band and it was the BOMB. It played like butter and the sound was even better. I also got to hear yours on YouTube and both of your AC's are sweet.

Ken I think my favorite part about your minty bass is the color of the clay dots against the finish....just disgusting....

so I'm sure you guys are sick of my CreativeControl episodes here haha but I just HAD to post these. If you don't have good speakers or are on a laptop don't even waste your time. But if you do, these 2 vids are probably the best ones to date that really capture the sound I'm going for on film and the AC just sounds SO NASTY (of course IMO haha) especially that little jam in the first one when he's introducing us....

but we're playing at this spot where we all basically met a few years ago. It's a club in the East Village in Manhattan (now closed) where every Monday a DOPE freestyle hip-hop jam would go down with a live band and about 30-40 MCs and everyone passes the mic and EVERYTHING was improv. I would say my true musical education came from this place and it's where I met all my contacts in the NY hip-hop scene. After I dropped out of NYU, this place was my home away from home and I would say Sin-Sin made me a better bass player than NYU EVER could have....so before they closed they asked us to do a set since we were born there....and here are some clips!

You know what's funny, I decided about 2 months ago that the mute had to go. The bass just rings/thumps perfectly with the TI flats as it is so there really isn't a need to mute the strings even more (IMO)....but the mute DEFINITELY makes a difference....I still keep it in my bass bag in case I feel like busting it out :D

...and totally smokin'. It's based on the LG, which in particular, is one of the best sounding basses I've ever heard in passive mode, as I think many have said here. And it's all the same guts and pickup position as the LG. You'd never miss the preamp in that bad boy.

What's also cool is he has the peace sign and 6571 under it on the face of the headstock to signify the "period of the hippies" (65 to 71)... because this bass, with it's water based simple finish, is also supposed to be about being green, or kind to mother earth, you get the point. :)

It is, I agree, and me neither, but I stood there while someone else played it and it was totally hooked up.

BTW, it was a pleasure to finally meet you in person. Too bad we couldn't hang out for a beer or something. Maybe next year. :)

So a bit more on this...

Back in the day, Fender used to call the two board types "slab" and "veneer" because they literally were... a radiused slab, and a thinner piece of rosewood that was bent over a radiused neck face.

But the veneer deal is not what Jimmy does. He told me he actually shapes the bottom of the board, so it's really more of a "cap", where the wood is "fitted" to the neck... not bent to fit the neck. This as opposed to a veneer, where the wood is bent to fit the neck. Again, I can't recall if that's the exact word he used tho... maybe Kirk, Jason, or Yohan can chime in on that.

I did a little reading on this and the tonal result should be as expected... the neck wood plays more of a role in the tone.

The big difference here is, I'm guessing Fender simply did it to save money, and didn't really care about wood grain distortion from bending. I take Jimmy's process to mean he wants the wood grain to be intact... identical to the grain in the blank he started with... when installed.

I think this is a really cool option, but I think my personal preference would still be the slab. Not because that's what I already have, but more because if I want a rosewood board, I really want as much participation from that as possible. That is obviously not going to be everybody's choice, but it would be mine. I can easily see, on the other hand, where someone wanted some influence from the rosewood, but still wanted as much maple participation as possible, and would find this a great option. Also, if you're trying to be period correct to a specific period, this is just one more way Jimmy offers a way to get there.
