I love that clip, and I believe this bass was just sold at Bass San Diego....

while we're on the topic of Marcus....I recently got to play a '61 jazz bass belonging to him and it was one of the first 3 knob jbasses Fender made. OMG this bass was not only in mint pristine condition like it was made yesterday but it played and sounded better than ANY pre-CBS Fender I've ever put my hands on. Aside from the original case, ALL the case candy, original strap, cable, mutes, and Fender cloth in sealed plastic bags, the craziest was this thing's slap tone. And I got chills when I realized slapping hadn't even been invented yet! Supposedly Marcus used this bass on a bunch of recordings and then gave it to his manager who sold the bass for $30,000....but glad to hear he bought that AC....I can't think of a better bass for Marcus but an LM!

Hahahaaha, me too, hey Mitch i would not be surprised if that is the case, as Mr. Miller is more of a 4 string player, man i love his freakin playing, every time i hear Marcus play i truthfully want to quit, it just blows my mind away to see how fast, accurate and just plain old insane in his style of playing...Its honestly beyond human to say the least.

That bass MARCUS is playing at NAMM is still with his camp. That I am certain of because I made a personal inquiry to that camp thinking that they may have sold that bass and or returned it...but ALAS...NOT.
That is a different bass at BASS SAN DIEGO and my inquiry on that piece was that it was marked down to $4K
to expedite selling it. There was a wood flaw ( perfectly corrected of course by JC himself-- BUT ya know those clear coats kinda show what really is under the hood...err wood

WELL maybe I am wrong too and it must have just been sent back BECAUSE I inquired after seeing the SAN DIEGO bass and was told by Marcus's manager--that he was playing and enjoying the bass from NAMM...well ????
Thanks fellas, for the gracious words about my help on Jimmy's upcoming new video. Rick has done a spectacular job- his footage looks completely cinematic. The project shows Jimmy in start-to-finish build mode, with great ruminations, anecdotes etc. It will be a benchmark release, and I look forward to the full final edit.
These pics show my recent attempt at a finish- I recently received Jimmy's prototype 6 (built for me, an honor) basically as it was shown at NAMM, where we brought it fresh after final cutting and assembling a few days earlier. It was raw virgin wood at NAMM, so I gave the body some nice rubbed-out coats of Minwax (poly/stain mix, "juniper satin" I think), with a few coats of boiled linseed oil on the neck. I was opting for an organic early 70s vibe and feel, and I think I came pretty close. This thing sounds incredible, and feels great. I'll put up clips soon. peace jg

beautiful Joe! Did Jimmy make a set of 6 string pickups or is the spacing just tighter over the 5 string set? And what does it say on the headstock?

below that is jimmy's nod to both the idea of a 6, and to post-9/11 NYC- "strength in numbers".
also, Minwax has a large selection of shades- it was easiest for me as a novice to work with one of their 1-step, poly/stain mixtures.
and yes, i do believe jimmy used a 5 pickup case- there was enough room in it, so it worked out great.

yeah, i ran both the linseed oil and minwax ideas past jimmy, prior to hittin' it.
he was cool with the mighty Min, also considering we're a continent apart geographically, with no time to have him do his beautiful custom finish work (as he's often said, it's a prototype, so we have some experimenting leeway).
it actually feels amazing- thin and sleek, like an oil coat but with poly protection, and it kicked up the grain in a great way.

Then Jimmy brought 3 basses from NAMM: Dayglow RA5, Oly White LG5 Classic Supreme and the funky Rainbow Sparkle KBP5. I was too busy mingling that I forgot to take pics... I'll post whatever I can get.

Well the 6 does look good, like you did a very even job and it definitely makes the grain pop. I hope one day to get Jimmy to make me a 6, but as a KBP. When I presented that idea to him a couple years ago he ixnayed it, so I'm very glad you got him to do it and see that it is viable. Meanwhile I've got an order in for a large body KBP5.
