Club Alleva-Coppolo (Part 19)

The first sadowsky prototypes had a deeper cutaway on the lower bout.. My old attorney ron beinstock had one that i played in the early 1990s or late 80s.... The treb side cutaway was very deep with a much longer horn than pictured in the photo you commented on..... That was on the first few that roger made.. He later went to what looks like here with the smaller lower horn and continues to this day with that.. I have photos of the original Roger Prototype somewhere.. but it was pre Digital cameras.. i will have to find it ..

EDIT.. I just got off the phone with Jimmy..
Those pickups were originally my old set of soapbar EMGs. He confirmed that... I gave him a bunch a parts around that time. I dont know if that bass has been modified since or if the EMGs are still in there...
It was an early 5 string version made from parts that he bought form Frank at the NYC Guitar show around 1997 or so.
He would love to locate that bass.. If anyone know where it is ..... Contact Jimmy about it..

Actually, the cutaway is slightly deeper now (see below)... it's mainly that the lower horn was shortened to keep it from looking as odd. Older Lull "Moderns" like Bryan Beller's (and one I used to have) are the same way. Here's pics:

Not a huge diff... just a fret or so deeper now, but IMHO looking way better with the shorter lower horn.

What the bass I was talking about? Gunnar Biggs has it. I can put him in touch with Jimmy. We're not far from Jimmy, so maybe we can pay a visit.

Yeah Jimmy will get a kick out of it... Im sure he would love to see it. They are all like his kids. hahha

I had a pile of early EMGs pickups that had to eval way back , and one of them is what went into that bass .. unless they were changed out as i said earlier.. They were single coil in a SB shell... A few sets had slanted coils and others were at right angles to the string plane.. Dont want the TB nerdys to break out the slide ruler and micro analyze that.. :rollno::D

I think I liked the Straight perpendicular orientation the best and they turned out to be the quieter of the batch. That bass may have the slanted coils though...

Def get Jimmy in touch with Gunnar...

The preamp was originally the first generation Alleva preamp.... dont know if it was changed out over time....Only slight changes were made about 6 years ago while he was still in NY

I think most players would find pre-amping a P bass to be unnecessary, there is plenty of girth and depth to the sound of a good P already, whereas a lot of J's need some help in the lows, anyway. If someone really wanted it I bet Jimmy would put his preamp in a P or it could just be run through the stompbox version.

Just talked to Jimmy, the 2 basses are:

1. LM5 Deluxe in Rootbeer: 2-piece Ash body, 1-piece Maple neck.

2. LM5-RW Limited Edition/Custom in Iced Tea Burst: 1-piece Ash body in beautiful Poly Iced Tea Burst (thinner black edges - super cool!), Indian Rosewood fingerboard with white binding and celluloid dot inlays, Neck finished in Nitro, Pearloid pickguard w/ a gold/yellowish hue to match the Gold hardware. As far as I can remember, the body was made and painted last year and the neck is brand new... The bass has been spoken for in the past but has never left the shop, the customer who put down a deposit decided on an LG instead.
