Looks like I'm taking a half day off from work today.
Thanks to Rick for helping Jimmy and getting my

Seriously tho, I think I'm getting to the point where GAS is diminishing. I'm looking at my herd and noticing the basses that aren't getting played as much. Don't be surprised if some go up for sale soon, but kind of a moot point for this thread, 'cause my LG5 is not even remotely being considered at this point. Barring unforeseen crises, it's a lifer. No way I'll ever find a 60's spec J I'd be happier with. No way.

I hear you. I'm actually in a similar space. I have so much stuff that I really don't need. I should thin out a bit as well.

I think I might....I love it so much but I just bought another vintage P and if it sounds the way I think it might I can't really justify keeping an AC on my wall seeing no action....shall we start the bidding war?

Spoke to Jimmy today, my KBP5 6571 is finished and on the way. Should be here on wed, will post up some pictures. Cant wait to get it and play it. Nice and simple alder/rosewood with black pickguard.

Ugh. No offense to what I'm sure is a great church, but while your playing is great as usual, I hate the EQ they have on you. Sucked ALL the mids out. ALL of them. Bass just sounds boomy with very little clarity/definition... not at all like what an AC can really do in a mix... and without sacrificing the low end, too. I've heard your sound before in other recordings and it's a thousand times better than that. Argh.

I know what you mean, but part of that has to do with my strings...the service that they posted was the second service on Saturday night and my strings were completely dead by then. My strings die FAST because of the chemistry of my sweat. I swap them each day when I play (using the denatured alcohol method) but by the second service my strings are usually shot. I've heard recordings at the church when they posted our first service and there was definitely more mid/treble content there.

In the past I would talk to the engineers and try to get my tone in the house just the way I wanted it...now I just don't care as much. As long as I can hear myself in my inears then I'm good to go.

Yeah, this is very definitely the main issue. I have a church I play in which is pure Aviom as well, and I've had to talk to them about FOH before. They got a new sound guy, however, and he's good. He's a good bassist himself (actually, multi-talented) and has good recording experience too. Problem solved.

Ironically, we did a 10 song pretty much "all music" service very recently, and the purpose was to cut a CD to give to the people that go to the church. I'll definitely get a copy. I'll share audio if I'm allowed (and of course if the sound guy doesn't make a liar out of me LOL!!).

I mostly agree with this.

The mix is definately guitar heavy, both in arrangement and volume, and the result is that there are a lot of mid fequencies already being "loudly" occupied. Sometimes, (depending on many factors) the best way to go is for the bass to not add to the mids but fill in the supportive role in the low end. The bass might have been mixed louder relative to the guitars ( especially the Tele guy) but the soundman might have been hearing it the way I described.

I dont think "ugh" is an accurate way to describe the bass.

Don't get me wrong... I'm not looking for Jaco's tone here. I totally agree with what you're saying generally... they just went too far with it is all... at least IMHO.

These are great points. I've personally been working on dealing with the playing aspect of what you're talking about - I'm used to playing with either no guitars at all or one guitar player because my background is in jazz, funk, and urban Gospel. I've only been playing at this church for a few months, and I'm adjusting to playing with three guitar players and with a completely different style of music. In urban Gospel the bass line is usually a counter melody groove that drives the entire song. With this contemporary Christian music style though, the bass parts are usually repeated quarter notes or whole notes with the guitars driving the songs. So I am playing WAY more simple and without the licks that I would normally be doing. As you mentioned, this matters with the tone as well because the zingy, bright, grindy tone that I normally prefer would clash a bit with all the guitar that's in the mix.
