I have heard some variance in the LG's, with some quite 'airy' (I would describe the green one that way), and others with a bit more meat. Pretty similar though, and a slight EQing gets them pretty close. There was an LG that Mikebass had, and other TBers owned it also that had a different board on it (not rosewood... can't remember), and that sat in a bit of a different place... brighter and grindier than the other LG's I've owned and played.

The original LM5. You dont have that one anymore. Thought you had the green or was it the gold?

yeah, that one was the first to go actually....sold it to my good buddy and fellow brooklyn bassist. He's actually a crossed over guitarist but he has good taste! :D

I still get to play it about twice a week so it works out, and since my LM5 has been collecting dust since I got my Fodera, we decided to swap basses for a little bit so the RA5 will actually be my only AC for the next couple of months or so....

@Pete, while they all did great things, the LM is just the most versatile I think and for guys like us that play all different kinds of gigs that's clearly a winner....unfortunately I've been bitten by the Fodera bug so don't be surprised if you see my LM5 in the classifieds soon! :cool:

I still have my wonderful Harvest Gold LM5 that I've been playing for 5+ years now.

I sold the LG to Joel (the nitro Surf Green), since I've always been an ash/maple guy. Just didn't gig the LG ever, and so out it went as part of thinning the herd a while back. Wonderful bass, but if I'm going for a bit more warmth and punch versus the LM, I go all the way to the P for that:D

I had an RA a while back in the midst of my Alleva-Coppolo 'all in' phase, but that didn't speak to me at all. Great sounding bass, but just didn't bring to mind what I consider the classic J tones from the 60's (LG) and 70's (LM) for me. Kind of warm and round down low like the LG, but more sizzly up top than 'fat and grindy' (at least the one I had). IMO there... different strokes.

That LM that I bought from Jimmy's shop back in New York is pretty much the 'anchor' of my collection. I'm down to it and a wonderful Nordstrand 5 string P bass at this point. Pretty much got rid of everything else I wasn't regularly gigging...even the wonderful Sadowsky Orange Bomber.

I do still have the Rob Allen Mouse... such a unique bass, and great for noodling around the house, or for the occasional jazz trio cocktail gig.

Peter! Of course, now I remember that you had that bass also. Yes, very nice, but like my experience with the RA, the differences between that LG and my RA were both 'lose' to the LM. Of course, depends what you want, so pure IMO.

Mitch, I've got to be honest, I know you've had a Fodera bug but knowing your style I have a hard time coming to terms that she is in your wheel house. But you've got a nack for making just about anything sound great.

I tend to agree with Ken about the LG and LM occupying two distinct spaces and the RA falling clumsily in the middle. With that said and having sold you the KBP, watched you play my LG and LM and your RA. I really thought that the RA fitted you very well especially the way you had it set up with the black diamonds. Haven't got to hear you play the LM since you made it your own.

Personally haven't played a gig in a year now, just chasing the two boys (2nd is 2 months) and restoring the old Bertram, we'll have to get together.

Ha, thanks Pete....I agree though the RA5 and I really had something special for a minute but I was just coming out of my passive-only-P-bass with flats phase so with some dead strings I could really make it thump with that alder body. It's really a great jbass for someone looking for that medium between a jazz and a P. After getting a bunch of new gigs where everyone wanted me soloing constantly, I needed something brighter that could cut through, not just support in the low end. The LM5 did a great job, but the playability of the Fodera is just a whole other ball game. And I can come very close to my comfortable sound but with that beautiful Fodera high end....it works!

And I can't believe you have another kid already!! mazel tov dude!!! So no more gigging huh? Hangin up the strings for family time....that's cool with me! Maybe I'll have to buy that upright back from you after kid #4 haha

Thanks Ken, life is good at this point I want to be home for bath time and bed time stories it's ultra important. My time will come back around with playing, my wife and father in law play so we have a bunch of fun playing band with the boys.

Mitch I do an occasional jazz standard thing for fun and mostly use the kohl stein travel bass so if you want to buy the upright back or even borrow it your welcome to it. I've made some nice upgrades she's in great shape just needs dusting off.

Back to ACs You all might remember Jimmy did a one off thicker neck profile on my LM, it's a bit more of a baseball bat and I couldn't be happier.

Wow, so the kolstein can hang with the big boys? good to know....I would LOVE to play my old upright again especially after the work you put into it! We'll talk when I can put some $ together....

and for those who haven't played Pete's LM with the extra fat neck....it's incredible. Feels like a good old vintage Fender but plays like an LM! definitely something to think about if ordering a new one from Jimmy....

Ok, been trying different strings on the Hippie P. I've tried GHS flats, bass boomers and DR Sunbeams. The winner is the Sunbeams. They're more warm and the mids is a lil more controlled to my ear. I don't have to roll my tone back as much. The GHS growl more, but I like my growl a smooth. Still loving this bass!

What Fodera did you end up with?

I'm also surprised you made the move as the AC's are such different animals -- and you sounded great on every clip I've ever heard of you on your AC's. Foderas are great too. I still have mine -- though I dig my AC's much more for where I'm at personally right now. My Foderas aren't going anywhere though.

Dumped my Fodera years ago when I finally figured out all I was trying to do was make it sound like a J bass:D I guess it makes sense for some to go the 'other way around' on that. Of course, wonderful basses in their own right.

I think I actually purchased my Fodera through your shop back in the day! Almost forgot!
