Interesting! Three different basses with three different looking burst finishes. All of them look amazing btw. It's funny you say you asked jimmy to avoid the three band black / red / yellow because that is the exact look I am asking for. Each to his own of course, and each of these basses look crazy good.

Thanks for posting these pics. When trawling the old threads It's hard to tell which ones are poly and which ones are nitro without someone stating the case.

And here's my KBP5 poly that definitely has more of the 3 color separatism and
equally as cool.

Definitely. His "thin poly" finish. I did not want to pay for nitro, and I did not want to have the finish wear out as fast as nitro.

Jimmy's finishes are just superb. You absolutely can not go wrong. Jimmy's comments about nitro looking different than poly was not intended to raise alarm, but rather just describe a nuance. He's very particular about detail, which is where all that comes from.

Call for opinions here...

I currently have an older set of Jimmy's steel strings on my LG. Really great strings for sure, but I wanna' go nickel now for a while. I'm gonna' throw some D'Addario XL's on there, but thought I might ping you folks for thoughts/recommendations on nickel strings as well.

Tight feel, somewhat aggressive in the mids, great price... Dunlop nickels. Might be a great match/yin yang (i.e., grind that bass up a bit) with the smooth, relatively polite voicing of the LG.

I used Lo Rider nickels on mine. Sweeter top end, moderate tension, nice midrange when the zing settled down. Kind of played to the voicing of the LG... Smooth, relaxed.

Nuttin' wrong with the DA's, and, they make a nice "balanced tension" set now.
The Dunlops are nice, perhaps a little more polite, and maybe last a little longer.
The LaBella Super Alloy are nice too.

And: Jimmy's nickles are good too; as quality as his stainless.

XL's are nice, Roto steels KILL on an LG (I've had 2) ... They're kinda like bright nickels IMO, with killer MIDS for that build.

Actually, I think those were nickel, right? I was thinking the steels were new.

+1 Quite frankly, that was the only roundwound there was early on back in the day. It was something back then. I am looking forward to continuing not to think of them at this point:p

I never paid much attention to that stuff back in the day. I think the original Swing 66 strings were nickel wound, and don't remember when the steels came out. They were bright and grindy as heck either way. I was always under the impression that the 'red pack Swing 66' that I used in the 70's through early 80's (until the Deam Markley Super Wounds or Rounds or whatever they were called came out) were Stainless.

I picked up a set of Roto Sound strings at NAMM. Swing 66.
It looks like they are the "thing" again. Big presence at NAMM.
I was just like you and the others, it was all I used.
Have not tried them in years.
Gonna stick them on a Fender Jazz and see what happens.

Of course, many of us are remembering them back when there wasn't much else around and they were 'bright and grindy' compared to their contemporaries.

My point being, that today, DR HighBeams are brighter IMO, but thats not the whole story. What makes Roto's cool for me is that they do some nice grind while maintaining a very rich mid-range character (which is why I dig them on LG type builds).

Dr High Beams have less mid-mids IMO, but geeze, they really work with an LM type build once you get past the initial breakin and such. Dial up ANY 2.1k at all and you're quickly moving into shades of Chris Squire, but with more phaaat...

I would like to take a second and give Props to 'the bullet' truss rod design. Blows the doors off of the traditional Fender neck heel 'X' type, and while the MM 'wheel' is effective, it is big, and it is ugly.

Bullets RULE!
