I totally dig the whole NF vibe... I know it's not necessarily true, but, IMO, bringing a bass down to its bare essentials makes that bass all about the tone... and there's something magical about that.

Love it.

I really like the look of that lefty NF 5. The alder looks so clean. I'd like to do that for an Old Fashioned 5, just right-handed!
I have a KBP4 and a KBP5, both with Indian rosewood boards. They are my only solid-body basses. Personally, I would never sell them to fund another.

Once in a while I keep reading discussion on vintage tone of pre-cbs Fender bass, but never really have a reference of what a real vintage sound is.
Can anybody suggest any records that showcase the organic sound of pre-cbs fender bass (J and P)?
Pure, organic with no effect maybe?

This, to me, is what "real vintage Fender tone" sounds like in my head.

It's not the tone I strive for personally most of the time, but that doesn't mean I don't love how it sounds in the mix.

These are some original bass tracks of some popular tunes, and I believe they're all played on vintage Fenders.

Well... I could've probably posted a recent recording of someone running a '57 P-Bass with flats into a vintage Ampeg B-15 Portaflex, recorded with an old tube mic and tube preamps onto analog tape, doing their best to emulate the original tone that Jamerson got... but I chose to post the real thing instead.

The alternative would be to post a modern sound achieved using a real vintage bass, but... I guess I didn't think that's what he wanted to hear.

he asked for the organic sound of a pre cbs fender. a mic'd up amp quiet amp recording the rolled off high end of a foam muted bass isnt the organic sound of a vintage fender. maybe thats "vintage tone", but you dont need a vintage bass to get that if thats all your trying to achieve. and hell, if all youre trying to get is "vintage tone" get any fender ever, put on some flats, raise the hell out of the action, stick some foam in there and only play out of low wattage combos and youre there all while saving a ton of bread!

Normally I wouldn't say anything until AFTER a bass was in my hands... but... let's just say I got a tracking number today and I'll be taking half of Friday off.

I traded the KBP5 for a NYC Sadowsky PJ5 about 6 months ago. I promised the wife when the LG5 was finished I
would get Jimmy to sell it for me since the company I work for has had a lot of problems. I don't know if they will
even be in business this time next year. When Jimmy finished the LG5 I just couldn't do it. But, I will have to sell something soon.
I only have 4 basses to choose from but something will have to go.:(

Yeah, it all happened rather suddenly, and... to be honest... I'm still in shock.

I picked up one of the Limited Edition Spalted Alder LG basses... it has a spalted alder body, maple neck, and "Jimmywood" board, which JC told me is "an exclusive hybrid/cross bread of two different species of Brazilian rosewood."

It was ordered by another lefty player who ultimately decided to order 5-string to match his current favorite 4-string rather than going in that direction... so, being that there are very few lefties who would be in the market for a bass like this, I guess this is one of those rare times where it was beneficial to be a southpaw.

I have a Fender Custom Shop '64 NOS that is my favorite bass in tone, feel and vibe... BUT, because of my current gig, I need the modern thing too... it's been my goal for a really long time to capture both of those flavors in a single bass and I think the A-C is going to knock it out of the park.

Anyway, here's a picture...

The burst finish on the neck, blonde striping on the fingerboard and spalting in the alder make it look like a late 19th century piece of folk art... it's so rustic and beefy looking. I love it so much. :D

Yeah, it was a HUGE risk on my part... but I'm PUMPED.

Beautiful bass!

I have a spalted alder Alleva Coppolo myself, bocate fingerboard - love it!
