Different animals in the Jazz bass category. But its what you would expect- the LG has a warmer rounder tone with a big smooth bottom end and a nice warm smooth but punchy midrange that makes the upper ranges sing.The RA would be like taking that tone and making the low end tighter and punchier and with the maple board you get some more clarity and definition with more ringing highs. All models do what they are supposed to do and are designed for IMO. If you get the nitro options for both the warmth and wood come through a little better also IMO...I've had numerous examples of both. The poly is great, nothing wrong with it but just to mention the ideal if you were able to go there. With the RAs I have they get the Marcus vibe too with the 70s back pup and poly/maple neck and board....so Jimmy and I have agreed for years if you Had to have one bass it might be an RA. However any of the three main J models can fit just about in anything with their own character.
As far as I know he still does for the Tom Barney models.Maybe he'd do it for any model I don't know.

Questions for the AC gang from a newbie.
I'm thinking of trading my 69 jazz for an AC in the classifieds. Some questions.
It is a 2005 LG 4 string. Do models from this year have the regular sized body? Not like some the larger ones I have seen since 2010.
The preamp only has 4 knobs. Pre amp is vol , Vol, treble, bass boost and 2nd volume is push pull active passive. Does that mean if I go passive I have no tone control? Or will the bass treble still work in passive? What is the difference between this preamp and the 5 knob?
Does Jimmy sell a bridge with tighter string spacing than 19mm for a 4 string? Would like an 18 or 17.5mm.

Oh man.....I know what you are doing and the only reason I'd caution you not to is so that I'd have a chance to get the AC haha! I'd trade a 69 (as amazing as it sure it is) for that AC any day.
If it has one less knob, there may just not be a passive tone control. I had one like that and it was still amazing. Jimmy would add it for you if you asked. I know from experience.
Hey there, as far as I know the LG4 you are looking at will have the standard four string body size that he still has. The five string models were changed to match the wider five string neck with a five string body and keep the same proportions aesthetically. The body was also thinned out a bit to compensate for weight/mass.
I don't know if at that time Jimmy was using the push pull knob for a passive tone control or not....the obvious thing to do is ask the seller to do it to confirm that it works as a tone knob in active or passive. Standard Coppolo preamps since Ive been owning them and before (2007) all have the passive tone working in active and passive both. I could be wrong but I'd be surprised if Jimmy put in a pre without one given his dedication to vintage vibe tone .
Jimmy probably does not stock smaller spacing bridges for 4 strings cause he builds less of them and he would most prob feel its not needed for the vintage 4 style Coppolo. However contact Hipshot as they do have 19 mm ( I had one on an FBass VF4), and I think 18mm also. Could be a custom order that you may be able to order OR contact any luthier that you know or deal with to order for you. Maybe Jimmy would do it but it might be a while as I'm not sure how often he gets shipments.
I don't know for sure, but around 2005 or possibly a year or two earlier is a guess. Maybe someone else knows.
I'm pretty sure the earliest I've seen was 2004 (SN was below B5-020 or B-020) but like Mitch wrote, could go back to 2003.
I'm getting B0013 that was made for 2005 NAMM show. Jimmy calls it an LG4 Classic Supreme Resurrection.
I was checking out old classifieds and saw someone sold B0017 listed as a 2004.
I guess since NAMM 2005 started on January 20th, then my bass would be considered a 2004 build?
Which prompted me to ask the question.

Yes cool bass!. Don't quote me on this but I don't think that bass has a passive tone. I've been looking for a LG4 for a while. So I've looked at many of them (online) and I have a memory of discussing this bass with the owner at the time.
As far as I know, 4-knob A-C's usually do not have a passive tone since Jimmy hasn't found a stacked pot that fits his requirements.
Thanks for the kind words. You are right. No passive tone on this one. Seems to be more of a Pensa Shur style layout.
