Club Alleva-Coppolo (Part 21)

I just got a Alleva bass. It is an LG5 TB. It is a great bass with a huge sound.

I was surprised that I had to take the neck off to adjust the truss rod. I see from this thread that some have bought the cross head screw driver - does that allow adjustment of the truss rod without removing the neck? Seems like it would align for every orientation of the truss rod nut?

Has any one changed the truss rod nut to an Allen style nut? If so, what thread size is used on the truss rod?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, why do you need to remove the neck?

Hi, why do you need to remove the neck?

I'm going to assume the "truss rod access routing" or the pickguard doesn't provide enough clearance for whatever tool they are using. They may want access to the truss rod nut straight on as well.
Taking the neck off just gives you full access to the butt of the neck on any bolt-on (with neck butt end nut access that is) including Jimmy's basses.

I don"t like the idea of using a flat head screw driver at an angle. That said, the lack of a solution on TB and @SamuelSandoval's question (above #2926) prompted me to dive in a try it and it works better than I assumed it would.

Thanks for the help.
That's what I've always done on my AC EUT5. Mind you, I've had it 10+ yrs and have only had to adjust a couple of times. It's very solid

That’s a great bass! It used to be mine. Check out this tool @sonicyogi recommended. I just ordered one.

Just to clarify, I asked not out of sarcasm, but to make sure I understood the actual scenario. Neil I thought it might because maybe the neck was unique and the board’s slab wasn’t allowing access or maybe some other reason that I wasn’t understanding.

To be completely honest, I think it’s a bad idea to take off the neck to adjust the relief. I’ve always found that having some string tension helps in being able to make the fine adjustment. Besides, when you loosen those four neck screws, my personal opinion has always been that you never quite screw it back exactly how it was. Perhaps I’m crazy and very well could be flat out wrong, but I think anytime I’ve unbolted the neck, things change enough for me to notice.

Timothy did shine light on a really cool stubby tool that gives access to tighter truss rod spaces. I would always recommend a tool like that over disassembling. My current LG’s nut has a hex head instead of a Philips. I bought a 7/32” hex wrench and I cut off about 3/8” off the short end. Works just fine. Have a great weekend everyone!

Hello dear Alleva Coppolo Club
I am a happy owner of a KBP 4 (AC LBP), and have a question about the LG 4 and LG 5
I have noticed on reverb a LG 4 and a LG 5 and there can deceive but is it possible that the LG 4 has a narrower body?

Alleva Coppolo LG4 Custom Red CAOJ 2020 | Reverb

I thank you for an answer and wish you much pleasure with your beautiful AC basses

greetings from switzerland
Claudio

The body size of the 4 string basses are similar to the standard Fender. Only the 5 strings have the newer/wider/bigger/Cali style body unless someone ordered a dinky, which would then be the same size as a 4 string, and of course the original NYC era instruments.

it could be the lighting but the LG 5 doesn’t look like a Dakota Red. Dakota red is darker

So, my 06 made NYC EUT5 would have the smaller bod?
I s'pose I could measure it.... but it's at home and I'm at work etc etc
