Cherry burst on mahogany * Love the Charcoal Frost LG too—that's one of my favorite Fender colors of the era! And @gwangi he's still building, he's just got so many orders that have to go to Korea and Japan last I heard. Had to focus on some of those because they put through big orders AFAIK. I've been trying to find US dealers too just because AC presence makes me feel warm inside.

George it's John Tetley, I still have both of my Zon Legacy Elite VI string basses I bought thru Bass San Diego, I heard similar information roughly 2 years ago regarding Jimmy, I guess nothing has changed.

Hey John! Yeah, seems like it's on cruise for now—I'll try to get in touch with Jimmy and report back when I can. I ALSO miss BSD hahaha. It was great, and I'm still in close contact with the boys from the shop. I remember your Zons (as well as the incredible wait for them!), they were two of the most beautiful basses we ever had come through!

Yep. He is or was fulfilling a large batch of orders and I think these are hitting the dealers around now.
I would e mail him and maybe he can hook you up.
He is completing a move too so probably very busy.

With your '60s/70s ACs do you find the stereotype about the former being 'warmer' and the latter 'brighter' true? Personally I've always found '60s Jazzes to be plenty bright, but with a rounder sound, more in the low mids. The '70s, to my ears, don't have more highs, but a harder sound with more focus in the high mids.

I know it's not just about the fretboard, but body and pickup spacing too of course, but you always hear that rosewood is warmer as a fingerboard material, while maple is brighter. When you hear about the actual necks however, rosewood is sometimes said to be too bright (those '60s rosewood Teles for example, ok, so it's a guitar, not a bass but stil...).

Just my thoughts.

Yes, typical warmer than a maple but i really like the 60's sound.
However, I've found the maple just has that presence in the mix..not a better sound as i like them both, but i think the maple just allows the bass to speak better.
The LG5 suits my ears but I think the LM5 has that cut.
Both do their respective era sounds very well.
The pre amp is the money but passive they work too.

I hear a snap in the LM that I don't hear in the LG. The LG is round and punchy. The LM has snap and sizzle that makes it unique to my ears.

The LG5 has that 60's snap though which is the intended result, I guess.

I think the older design plate was continued because 'it sounded better'.
I have to say I prefer quick change bridges but wouldn't swap out my plate bridge...yet.

I hear you. I kinda like a high-mass bridge on an LM to be honest—gives it a little more tightness/natural compression and sustain that to my ears helps cop sort of a Marcus vibe.

Whats the deal with the Resurrection range..Still active, no tone though.

Ressurection model is passive with tone.

I was told by a dealer VV treble and bass but no tone on the 4 controls..? and the picture suggests same.

But official site indeed says 'passive'.

Typical Resurrection basses are passive like @basses55 stated. There can certainly be one-off basses or custom basses that Jimmy makes that might differ slightly. I'd love to see the picture you refer to.

I don't know what dealer told you that but the Ressurection model is a passive bass with VVT. No active bass/treble. Control plate also like Fender. I have 2.
Your bass sounds like it "could" be an early model when Jimmy developed his preamp without a tone control. I don't think there were many, probably just a few of these made. The dealer may be confused.

Resurrection LG5 Limited Edition.

RESURRECTION BASS
The Resurrection is the bass for purists. No Pre-amp, the plate for the volume and tone knobs. Passive bass, NItro Finish. Proprietary A-C pickups, lollypop tuners, and that classic sound we all search for.

Above from the website, I don't know what more you need. I have 2 ordered directly from Jimmy. Cheers.

The dealer told me active and the tone plate is 4 knobs VV treble and bass, no tone control, side jack.
And yep, Nitro.

Could just be an aftermarket modification too...

I know I'm super late to the party, but I think I can clear some things up!

Resurrection models are, as @basses55 mentioned, originally passive with VVT standard controls. The purist idea was because Jimmy found a model number for pickup wire from a vintage Fender spool, reached out to the manufacturer and figured out they could still produce that wire on special order. So he has/had very limited special spools of this cool vintage correct wire that he hand winds on the slow winder for the Resurrection pickups

Now the confusion comes because so many people love the AC onboard pre that he has produced them with Vol./Bass/Treble controls on the plate on 4-strings, as well as just using the Res pickups on a typical setup VVT/BT (you can see how this is confusing haha). There might be modified basses out there either aftermarket or by dealers, but I know for a fact that they've been made and sent out from Jimmy's shop as original with Res pickups and preamps. The naming conventions is just what throws everything off. Jimmy I think used to call an active Resurrection a Res Custom Modified, but it's not like production is high volume enough for it to take hold with the greater community.

FWIW at BSD I think we used to call them by long model names indicating Res pickups, like "LG5 CS Resurrection". But I'm not even 100% on that lol.

I like the idea of the 2 control active. Its very useable. Not sure I'd go with the safety net of the Tone control as yet, but never say never.

Love Charcoal Frost—picking a fav color is such a fun and difficult decision on an LG! LOL

I remember waffling so hard between my favorite classic Fender colors (Surf Green, Sonic Blue, Fiesta Red, Firemist Gold, Charcoal Frost) and my favorite Coppolo signature colors (Black Sparkle, Candy Apple Orange Juice, Fiesta Orange, Deep Purple Sparkle, Candy Dart Green). I love them all, but luckily won't have to seriously think about it until I can get another AC (either a P or a Goomahda)!

We need more Goomahdas and 81009s in the world. I mean 81009 essentially stands alone as a 5-string '51 (really '54) P—at least compared to how good other high-end super Js there are.

And the Goomahda preceded the wave of enthusiasm for both the Ray single H resurgence/disco funk sound AND shorter scale instruments. It's the EBMM Joe Dart before that was even thought of. And consistent with the name, it's about the only 4-string that I might keep as a side piece to my LG5
