Club Alleva-Coppolo (Part 21)

May be that this has been discussed here already, but I could not find any post about it:

What is the reason that on Jimmy's newer models the body shaping on the back side has been shifted more towards the butt ? I have seen this on at least 4 newer (2011+) ACs and for me the newer shaping is much less comfortable. These basses tend to be neck heavy on my shoulders. At least they do not feel smooth in front of my waist due to the fat upper horn... I cannot see any reason to go that route. It feels simply against all ergonomics... not to mention the pure difference to the real 60s shapings.

Anyone who can put some lights on this ?

Example of the older ones left, newer ones right:

Jimmy changed the body style around that point. He went to a slightly larger (top to bottom) body 0n the 5's to be more proportioned to the five string neck. I personally prefer the older style also but it's honestly not that big of an issue for me. You can still request the older style when you order one.

He also made the bodies slightly thinner (font to back) to be more in-line with the size of vintage Fenders. I nice side benefit of that was that it also compensated for any weight that the bigger body added.

Hope that helps.

Shape doesn't really bother me. I have a prototype dinky size LG5. Similar to Sadowsky s smaller body shape. No body minds the smaller size in those basses. The newer Alleva. 2010 or so Are only about 1/8 in all around. Hardly discernible to me. But to each there own. He will do normal size body if you ask. Or dinky which is slightly downsized.

It's so funny but after playing AC's for a few years, the small body size of my Sadowsky's actually seems wrong to me. Still love them but kind of wish they were full sized bodies.

The shape of the belly cut will vary by bass since Jimmy does them by hand. When I was helping him at the shop a couple years back, the CNC was just getting underway so the programming was still being tweaked for it to do most of the carving, so some of the difference can be due to that. I'm not really sure if he got it to do what he wanted so as far as I know Jimmy was still mostly doing the belly and forearm cuts by hand (using his giant belt sander). I never specifically asked but I don't believe there was any conscious or firm decision to change the contour shaping. The last LG5 I had was the new bigger body but the belly cut shape was similar to the old picture you posted. I am fairly sure Jimmy would accommodate a request on this. Hope this helps.

You mean, the shift happened accidentally ? I owned 4 newer ACs now and they all have the shifted shaping. I own and owned 5 older ones and they all have the (imo) correct shaping... I never ordered one from Jimmy directly though.

Anyway - seems that nobody else has trouble with this... I will stick on my older ACs. Comfort matters.

I am definitely with you on the comfort. I have a less than flattering mid section so the change works for me. I guess I need to ask Jimmy to confirm. I need to check this thread more often as I was with him Thursday and could've asked. I wouldn't say the change was accidental but then again, a lot of good things are. I'll post what I find out.

Got my new RA5 with a Jimmywood board a couple weeks ago! I've been getting compliments on the tone at almost every gig I play! It's hard to see in the pics but the edges are more of a dark cherry color in the light. Best jazz I've ever played! Now all I need is a kbp!!!
