I finally snagged a KBP5. Not that I was surprised, but it's an absolutely awesome bass. Everything about it sounds and feels like the best of the vintage Fenders out there. I'm really digging it. I haven't spent enough time with it yet but this weekend I'll probably throw some flats on it.
You guys with KBP's, what strings are you using? Flats, rounds, etc?

Had TIs on my KPB4 but went to GHS Boomers (nickel rounds) which sound great to me.
how would you compare the tone to that white fodera in your avatar? that guy looks like 70's spaced singles right?
cool. thats a great collection of basses you have. when the pope failed on a recording session i was doing with my old emperor elite, i ended up using my coppolo stompbox pre. pretty different vibe indeed.
Joel when I owned a KBP5 that eventually went to Mitch I had TI jazz flats on it. I'm curious to get an honest opinion on how the KBP5 compares to the Fender American Standard 5 you have?

My sparkle KBP5 currently has Flats on it.... It sounds killer with Rounds too...
I have Fender flats with a round lowB string.... And when its rounds i use the Alleva KBP nickel rounds....

I'm curious about this also. I need to spend some time with both basses.
I mentioned in another thread that I recently, on a whim, picked up two American Standard V's -- A Jazz and a Precision.
They were completely sight unseen through Musician's Friend. It was a total leap of faith in that I didn't get to sift through a bunch to find the good ones. I have to say though, in all sincerity, they are awesome instruments in every way. They sound and play great, the fit and finish is perfect, they are both under 9 lbs, and they both have wonderful B strings.
They don't have the same vintage vibe nor the boutique cool factor that my AC's have -- but for the money, they are hard to beat. I'm actually going to have them both refinished in nitro. The JJ in Surf Green and the P in Purple sparkle.
And I'm keeping my AC's. It's the perfect collection for me. A Custom Supreme LG5, a Custom Supreme KBP5, and an LM5 Deluxe. All in sunburst!
wow, nitro refinsh on the fenders. any thoughy about getting the backs of the necks refinished in nitro too while youre at it?

THESE are sweet. I just go 3 sets shipped to me (1 nickle; 2 stainless ,all standard gauge .45-.105) I will be replacing the set that came with my recent A/C bass shortly (hours of playing time!) as well as slapping a set on my FCS. There is some fine tone contained within these sets.
Recommend.

awesome! that should close the vintage feel gap a little just from a tactile perspective. the finish on newer fenders feels pretty different than nitro.
I have TI flats on my KBP5 Standard (mine is the green one representing the Standard on the AC website), they sound great and are very easy-playing. The gauges are a little thin for me, though they were so expensive I'll use them for quite a while and then keep them for future use. I'd like to find nice supple sets of rounds and flats for this bass that are gauged 45-105 and around 130 for the B, so I'm open to suggestions.
I may have to reconsider the matching headstocks. The finisher can't replace the logos if I go matching headstock...
Guys, what's the deal with the '2008 NAMM KBP5's'? The one I just picked up was one of them and I've seen at least two others. It seems odd that Jimmy would make a bunch of the same exact basses to bring to a NAMM show. Just curious if anyone knows the background on these.

2008 was the unveiling of the KBP5 bass.. I got mine at that show.. . sadly i traded this one.. it was a good one.. He had a SB in Nitro at that show. .I almost picked that one.. But since i am the test boy for much of his stuff.. i volunteered on the test Painter and took the test Black.. might have been eh nicest Black that i have ever seen.. The last that i knew is that the Black one went to Canada,, DN fingerboard.. played so great .. very lightweight alder.. i picked teh blank myself .. and i believe it was the last bass to be made on NYE in the NY shop... Id like to get that one back one day... I know who has/ had it. but he wont sell...

here is the NAMM 2008 Booth.. I believe there were only two KBP5s at that show IIRC....my Black KBP5 #1 and the sunburst one on the tables.. All the rest from that show were 4 string p basses and 4 and 5 string Jazz... a few 6 string guitars too...
