Hey Mitch,

Selling the RA? Never! But I do have a bass exactly like it that you may be interested in. It's not ice blue metallic like the RA5, it has no blocks or binding, it only has four strings, it has a rosewood neck, and a precision pickup. Other than that it's nearly identical (except it's a Fender), and it's a little less than half the price! How can you say no?

Seriously, you've got your own RA coming soon, and I think it's soon going to be time for a heavy duty Markham area AC fest/BBQ type deal.

So, I've been thinking these past couple days about how lately, I've been noticing a lot of people talking about how great their basses are which have the truss rod wheel, so they can do easy adjustments in all this heat and humidity that recently hit the east coast. These guys are saying how wonderful it is to make quick adjustments on the fly when the neck moves due to the weather...and I have to agree with these people since many of my non-AC basses have the wheel and I find it very useful!

Based off my previous experience, I would fully agree with these guys that the truss rod wheel is one of the greatest things ever to happen to the E. Bass...untill my brutal gigs this weekend.
I just realized I'd rather have an old cut/old growth neck that's stable as hell and not going anywhere, than a device designed to easily compensate for a lesser neck's instability.

I am afraid my fear has come to pass. I got a notice of liquidation of some of my assets from my wife's attorney the other day and I am going to have to sell my Alleva....


I have gotten PMs from a number of people in the past asking for dibs but I have inadvertently deleted them. I am waiting to hear back from 1 person who is interested but I wanted to put this out there to you guys that follow this thread before I list her in case it falls through with this party. She is no doubt, without question the finest specimen of a bass I have ever had the privilege of possessing. I have given serious thought of asking more than I paid for her and I am certain she would sell. If I have to I am going to do a for sale listing in the Classifieds here for $4750 shipped to the lower 48 in the original Gig bag she came in (I paid $4990 I think it was). I don't have to tell anyone how terribly upset I am to have to sell her but I really have no other choice. It seems this is my punishment for selling a lot of guitars and some of my other basses and other gear for "less than fair value". She has gotten a lot of my cash already and they are liquidating nearly all of my musical assets to allow me to keep some of my other non musical assets (like my Jeep and my cars, I have a collection of classic muscle cars and the lawyer wanted to force me to sell those but they are titled in my mom's name....) She is really going for the throat just like I figured she would. It seems like sooner or later they all do! It sucks!!!!!!

Anyway, I have posted a lot of pics here in the thread obviously but if there is anything specific that you want to see just let me know and I will try and post it up. After the dust settles (and I can afford it again) I will definitely get another one and I only hope it is close to equal to this one. I hope one of you guys can get her and keep it in the family. I am taking numbers so to speak in case the other deal falls through so this is sort of a heads up before I list her formally. Thanks for reading and all the kind words and thoughts and prayers I have gotten from a LOT of you guys over the last few years while I have been here. I know it seems I have the worst luck of anyone in the world (and sometimes I believe it!!) but just remember that life is full of challenges that we must all face and these are simply the challenges of my life. In the end, I expect to be happier and healthier for getting it all behind me so I can move forward again. I really appreciate having Talkbass as an outlet for me to give something back to the music that has given me so much joy in my life. Thanks!

I am so sorry to hear about that Tom. A few years ago, I went through the same thing and more than one instrument had to take the bullet for me (so to speak). But I am here to tell you there is life after divorce, and you will most certainly rise from the ashes. Best of luck. If that was a 5 string, I'd be figuring out how to sell a kidney or something!

The problem is I have a LOT of tools. I play bass and I am an engineer. I have a lot of basses, guitars, amps, keyboards, drums, recording, and PA gear as well. My outboard stuff alone is worth a pile. I am hoping that a judge will put a stop to it. Unfortunately for me I NEED a lot of the other tools I have to do all the things I need to do. I am pushing to limit what she can outright take without letting me pay fair market to keep it. My biggest argument is that most of the vintage stuff I had before we even met. Because of the fire they are trying to say that even though I replaced most of what was lost, I still acquired the stuff after the marriage and therefore she is entitled to half! I really hope that a judge agrees with our contention that it is simply gear that was replaced due to the loss in the fire and she has no claim to anything that I had acquired before marriage but had to replace since due to the fire. I am hoping that my attorney will get me a reprieve from losing a lot of this to the highest bidder. I have some really great old stuff that I know I won't get 10 cents on the dollar for because the people in charge are just liquidators, they have no idea what this stuff is worth! Anyway, I appreciate the sentiment! I am crossing my fingers that it works out that I can keep her....edit - THE BASS that is! Somebody else can have the other her!

Tom.. I am so sorry to hear what you are going through.. I thougt that my recent ex was the most civil, warm hearted, intellegent, morally in tune and the most un crazy woman that i EVER knew...and i mean ever.. and she is a nurse.. but sadly i too found out that the most sane woman, will eventually go crazy... they ALL do.. I NEVER thought that this one would.. she was too stable.. some show it real early on... some dont for years and years... they all go crazy.. its just a matter of time......
I am so sorry for you for what you have to go through now, and i know how you love that bass too...

I am hanging with a friend today in austin that is on a legal case... its crazy but he has copy written his name and challenging the jurisdiction of the court , lawyers, maritime law vs whatever the other law is.. its too deep for me ... ect.. i hope he just doesnt piss of the judge... but it has got me thinking of maybe starting the drop out of the THE SYSTEM thing too..

can the bass be stolen.. by me and then somehow you get it back at some later date?

be closing the doors at the NYC shop this week and
heading to the San Bernadino area.

He's going to be REALLY close to John Suhr's shop.
He will also be very close to Carey Nordstrand's shop.
Anyone living in that area is going to be in bass heaven!

Now for the not so fun part of the post. . . One of the reasons I bought this bass is the scale length and neck profile. I used to play 36 in scale basses, then 35, but my tendinitis/carpal has gotten quite bad in recent years. A doctor told me to scale back (pun intended) so I dropped back to 34.

So, here's the bittersweet part - I played this beast on Sunday at church and there was pre-CBS Jazz bass mojo just flowing out of my 12's all morning. Clear, tight, punchy as all get out, the B was perfectly integrated and perfectly clear (much to my surprise) even with the bent-plate bridge. I barely had the bass/treble engaged and really left the passive tone alone as well and it just oozed nastiness. It was everything I expected it to be. . .

Problem is that my left hand was numb for about an hour after our set, which was only 35 minutes long. I sat through the service trying to do some hand exercises the doctor showed me to get the feeling back. I've only played her twice for about 10 minutes since Sunday. I'm going back to PT to try and figure some things out here because I'm not keen on going to a 32 in scale bass - and I'm even less keen on this beautiful thing becoming a wall ornament!

Beautiful bass!!!! I've gotten to the point of literally not wanting to play anything else (other than my Sadowsky every once in a while). That is an amazing instrument you have!!!

Be careful with the hands, and good luck with that. I had some problems a while back. As most can tell, I spend a lot of time on the keyboard with my job. I purchased a 'split-ergonomic' keyboard for my PC, and slightly lowered the standing position of my bass a while back to reduce the 'bend' of my right wrist, and I've never had any more problems.

Be creative with your right hand technique... a little bit can really help (at least in my case).
