I am about 2 months out from my LM5 and am confident Jimmy is going to make an awesome bass and if it's not perfect I am sure he will make it right. Maybe even more so now....

Sorry that happened to you Celindermotoman........I hope he get's it back to you soon and even more perfect then you originally expected...

I have not been able to speak with Jimmy in over 6 months... so lets get that out of the way.

The original poster has valid complaints.... but let me move on for a minute

mmm is anyone neutral....truly neutral ? Are you?
No BS now.
I find there is more slant and agenda pushing and more BS and hype in this forum than i have ever seen from a bunch of adults....

TB is great entertainment tool and a place to get some info.. its not the Bible!

First you don’t even know me. And I certainly don’t know you.
But people that do know me quickly realize that I’m a straight shooter.. You may not like what i say or how i say it , but that’s not my problem.

One of the reasons why we must put our affiliations on the Header is to let folks have a better understanding of the things we may say... Its TB Rule. Perhaps a silly rule but it is a rule anyway.

Would you believe me more if i did not have my affiliations posted? :rollno::rollno:
It could easily be done.
I could remove them.. And no one would know any better.
And i could post anything under the wire, and i would not have to defend myself against your statement. :D

But im being honest and stating my knowledge and experience from my REAL WORLD dealings.. Of which goes pretty deep and stretches pretty far, without wanting to toot my horn. Which i hate to do.

Anyway the Affiliation is posted so that the folks that are able to read, will see the affiliation and then they can choose to either take the written info or just move along to the next thread.

Now, I have known Jimmy for over 20 years. Both professionally and as a friend.
It goes back to when we both lived in new york city ,up until today.. He helped me out with my gear when in I was in the studio and on gigs, he introduced me to folks and I did the same for him. We go way back..

In fact it was I that busted his tail real hard for a long while, I was relentless trying to get him to make basses after seeing the incredible guitars he was making for some of the NYC studio cats.

Unfortunately I was not the first Alleva Owner .
Jason got the first Alleva bass. He was in town on tour and I met him and I saw he #1 bass, heard it live and played it after the show and said wow..It was a nitro Dakota Red JJ4, strung BEDG. I remember it well.

I said,Im glad he is doing it.. So my nest trip to NYC I picked out my wood..which became my favorite bass .

So am I Neutral?..In the big picture, I hope so..
But what I have written earlier in this thread has more to do with etiquette and the lack of it where the complaining person chose to pre-maturely aire dirty laundry in a forum. without even giving 24 hr to speak with the builder... thats just too weird to me
Something that should have been taken care of over the phone first with the builder..
It Doesn’t matter what his gripe was.
That’s not the way to handle that in the bizz world. That was improper etiquette.

Like I said I have not talked with Jimmy in over 6 months... so i dont know what the deal is with this.
I do know how he is as a person, as a builder, as a human being, dog lover and a guy that is real passionate about a the vintage vibe like no one i have ever met..

And to have his name and company name dragged through the mud the way one person has done so far in this thread bothers me and i need to say something in his defense.. If that makes me not neutral in your eyes, then that’s cool for you..

But I would do the same for Roger Sadowsky too..
I have known Roger since the early 80s, and I own his basses too. And I would defend him to the end too, if someone did a similar thing to him on a forum.

Someone emailed me to tell me that Jimmy has hired someone to help.
The guy who is now at Alleva is also has a good reputation in the bizz and has a slew of war medals to back up his work .

Like I said a page or two ago, Mistakes happen. And mistakes can be corrected if you give it a chance, and not to just send an email on a Friday night ( I assume after dinner since he waited for UPS to get there) and expect to get an email response right away… Its not an IM!!!:rollno:

And like I said yesterday, even Sadowsky (another great builder) has clearly listed on his site to not depend on EMAIL as a way to communicate Since It IS Unreliable.. Use the Phone..

Without going postal, I have seen the main complainer here have issues with other companies in the past, and I have witnessed that on a few occasions.. its all cool none of us are perfect .. not even me.:)
But that is what it is.. Does that make this right? Well like I said humans make mistakes on both sides.
And give jimmy a chance to address it before you go and try to drag his good name through the mud..
That’s me as a friend standing up for my friend, not a player or endorser. I hope you get that.

This has nothing to do as an endorser. He’s my longtime friend.

Lastly , the bridge is a mistake. OK, %^& happens… Theback plate would be good to see a photo.
Now the scratches.. I would ask the complainer a question..
is this his first dark colored bass? Is it Nitro or Poly. If you run your fingernail over the "scratches" ,do you feel the grooves of the scratch? If not it may be swirl marks..

The reason I ask those???? is because dark color basses will often show Swirl marks alot easier. Are they swirls .. I dont know, i have not seen it.. if so and a swirl bugs you , you call the guy on the phone...…

My good friend got a high dollar bass from a builder that is similar to the Alleva and well spoken for on this forum.
It was a black bass, just slightly darker that rootbeer.. and that bass, from that builder, had finish swirl marks on delivery..
They were not scratches, just some buff swirls… dark colors show that way more easily at times… Think about that before you go order a dark bass,, The same for Dark cars etc. doesnt happen all the time.. but it does happen..

Did my friend send the bass back, NO..
He going to play it, gig it ,not sit stare at it…
So I’m saying , is it finish swirls or scratches?

Hmm...endorsing artist, you're neutral?

I wouldn't call Jimmy's customer service into question over this in a public forum, yet, as it's only been a day and he should absolutly speak with Jimmy. But, give the guy a break. He's upset for valid reasons. I don't care how much Jimmy is stressed out gearing up for NAMM or Bass Day or whatever. Maybe he should hire someone if he is getting too many orders. I certainly wouldnt let my QC suffer.

And, public forums are for expressing dissatisfaction as well as excitment. Anyone reading the AC threads certainly couldn't miss the fact that there is everwhelming adulation by AC owners around here. I'm glad to now know of the no return policy.

Keep us posted MotoMan, my guess is that it will all work out well enough that all the AC fans and endorsers will be happy.

Im sure he will.. I know jimmy.. ask anyone else that knows him or the numerous stars that play his basses.. He is a guy of his word.

Please keep in mind that I am an Alleva Coppolo fan, own a silver RA4 and really want this bass. That being said, I wish this hadn't happened and hope that Jimmy does make this right.

forget what it looks like for one second.. How does that bass sound?

Jimmy admitted he spaced on the Badass bridge, but whoever screwed on that back plate HAD to have seen that there were gaps, that's all I'm saying. The scratches were light and only visable at a certain angle.
I understand people make mistakes, so only charge $2000 for your basses (not directed at just Jimmy but EVERY luthier that charges high $$$ for their CUSTOM or HANDMADE instruments).
If it had been a Fender, I wouldn't have even thought twice (but then I'd still have a few grand in my pocket)

+1

Also,
I just got in from a fly date and catching up on this thread.. so that is why i have one after the other posts going here

I agree that considering the pricepoint of these instruments (along with a host of other high-end luthiers), you expect a certain level of craftsmanship. I would be disappointed too, and I'm not saying that he shouldn't be. However, I think that the issue with "boutique" basses that we should be concerned about is not that every instrument coming out of the shop should be perfect the first time around. Jimmy's human and people make mistakes. I think the main issue is how it gets handled by the builder when they find out they have an unhappy customer.

If you talk to the guys that work at shops that carry high end basses, they send those basses back to the luthier from time to time because they're not happy with the attention to detail or craftsmanship. The good builders make their customers (retail stores and personal orders) happy, and the ones that can't generally don't find much business because of how word of mouth spreads on the internet these days.

I just feel like the whole picture wasn't being painted in his early posts. As a few have said, this is probably the exception to the rule, and not the norm for Jimmy. In a few of the posts, some people were jumping to conclusions and not giving Jimmy a chance to make it right.

+1 Vic
I agree with you.. from what i have been reading today , it has affected Jimmy in a negative due to the full story not coming to a conclusion until after i have read that some people wanted to cancel orders, etc. Or being skeptical about making an order.
Let me tell yall.. i dont really have a dog in this fight. I dont make any money either way... im only wanting my friend Jimmy to get a fair shake.. Of which at this point it appears to be leveling out.. But this has created almost 2 pages of slanted possible negative talk..
So +1 to your post..

But the "experience" wasn't completed yet, and in its premature state, really reflected poorly on Jimmy (IMHO moreso than was deserved... I've already agreed you have valid complaints), as if to say he'd had a fair chance to respond and chose not to. Consider Vision's reaction if you think I'm reading too much into it. Your posts almost cost Jimmy a sale. Doesn't seem right to me.

Again tho, just IMHO.

Just speaking from my experiences here, Jimmy has been exceptional in taking care of any issues with my basses and going out of his way to make me happy. I dont think I've ever owned a bass that has been literally 100% perfect at any price point, but the real mark of a company is how issues are handled, and even the style they are handled in when they happen (as people have been saying here already). Whatever happened and/or why, I'm sure Jimmy feels bad about a customer being unsatisfied and will make it right. This is not always the case.....

I can see validity in forums being both a source of information and at the same time an outlet for people with emotion for whatever reasons about music or instruments.....its really hard IMO to know exactly (without reproach) where that line should or has to be. I think this case is one of those that can straddle both. So I'll just note the facts, the conclusion, and not get too excited over whether or not he should have said what when and in which order and/or said it in a different way.
The important focus here (for me) is what were the defects, how were they resolved, and most importantly, how does the bass sound/perform in the music you are trying to make? Thats how I live with the discovery of the inevitable imperfections when they do happen whether or not they should or shouldent have occured. Thats just my perspective and priority I'm throwing out here....not to imply it should be everyone's either...

I do feel the OP will get the situation resolved asap.

I guess I would throw my .02 behind CelinderMoto...I don't have any reason to think the issues won't be resolved but there is obviously some "out of the box" expectation when you're ordering a pricey custom Fender style instrument. You could get an imperfect jazz bass for $1000.00. At 3x that price you're paying for the details, so I understand the frustration. In any event, I would give A-C a chance to make it right before getting too upset.

Yeah, I'm not upset with Jimmy and have spoken to him (as I stated before) I am upset at the knuckleheads who think I am in the wrong for (not slandering, but stating my personal experience) reporting on something that I was asked. I guess I shouldve waited until it was fixed and pretended it never happened.

You are looking too deep to find something negative again.. So no. i said to look beyond the visuals for a second and let us know how that Bass sounds.
I cant say it any simpler.:rollno:

What? So you're saying it doesn't matter what condition a bass is delivered in..as long as it sounds good? That's hilarious

dood this isn't Twitter where we have to give a minute by minute play of what we do.:D

Why are so many people upset that the OP reported a problem he had with his bass? This could have happened in a thread supporting any popular custom luthier... if someone receives something that probably shouldn't have been let out of the factory, they're certainly within their right to want to talk about it.

Let's face it: we all knew Jimmy was going to make this right. Even though he doesn't take refunds (and it makes perfect sense that he wouldn't), one of the main reasons that any of us buy from a custom (read: expensive) luthier is that they stand behind their product, and in the event that something does go wrong, they handle it. I didn't read anything the OP wrote as overtly negative, outside of the fact that the bass had defects. As has been stated a few times already, the real news here is how the situation is handled, not that there were some oversights.

Yeah, the rumors are true,
I deleted my Twitter,
Can you believe it
I got my 2 million
I had to say adios
I had to say goodbye
And this little rap
Is to tell my fans why

Sorry...

Hey, you want to put yourself out there, then you have to accept the bad with the good. It probably should have been handled privately instead of on here, but it appears that the courtesy of allowing people to make things right before you trash them on the internet is a thing of the past, so I guess people are going to have to start accepting it.

I've missed part 8 as I've been too busy at work but I couldn't let this topic pass. FWIW I agree that celindermotoman has issues with his bass. Personally I would have spoken with Jimmy before I posted the details here but that's me. I bought my first LG-5 sight unseen based on what I'd read here and when it arrived the first thing I saw was where the painter had sanded through the finish when buffing the color coat. I mentioned this to Jimmy, via phone, and he offered to refinish the bass. I declined as to me the defect wasn't that big a deal to me. A month later when I ordered my second bass, a sunburst KBP-5, I received a discount on the bass as ordered and while I ordered it with a nitro body and a poly neck he had the neck shot with tinted nitro at no additional charge as he thought it would be a better bass. While I certainly am no where near the bass player that any of the other AC players are, I'm in a cover band and jam with friends hack, Jimmy's a stand up guy and will make things right. While I want a perfect bass at this price point my initial finish issue has been eclipsed by my own relicing as my LG5 is my go to bass. And since I can't resist a little bass porn and I missed the start of part 8....

Moving on...

In between all the fuss today, I decided to open my set of Alleva Coppolo Kirk Powers Signature Nickel strings (light gauge I believe) an install them on an MIM Fender Precision (ooohhh, sacriledge). I bought this one super cheap because my son wants to learn to play bass. I have to say these are really nice sounding strings, and have helped to make this MIM sound and play well beyond my expectations. So, kudos to Jimmy, Kirk, and anyone else who may have been involved in the design of the strings.
