Some thoughtful advice from one AC club member to another -
I would suggest you comb the classifieds to get a better idea of what these are going for on the used market before posting in the classifieds.

Since this isn't a for sale thread nor have you started one I am comfortable saying this. Il Capo recently sold a KBP4 for $2500, Celindermotoman's LM4 custom $3200 and Mattyiop just listed his KBP5 for $3000.

I love Jimmy's basses I own two already and have a third on order so I'm well aware of what the new prices are. I'd also tell you that $3500 is a great deal for a barely used AC, but the reality is on Talkbass they don't seem to be commanding what we may preceive as a "fair" used price.

Believe me I will soon own 3 of these basses and I'd like to see them sell for the highest price possible but the demand for one just isn't the same as some other more popular brand names...

In any case if and when you list it in the classifieds I'll be glad to delete my last few posts.....I hope I'm wrong and you get every penny you are asking honestly!!!!!

leona1, I gotta' back up Peter on this. It's just like buying a car. As soon as you drive it off the lot, it's "used" and you always take a bigger hit than you'd like if you flip it.

Here's a big reason why...

Even tho it may be essentially in new condition, you still have to compensate for the fact that someone else is buying YOUR preferences, not THEIRS, which really truly matters, and believe it or not, it also often really matters to a lot of people at the high end that, they are the original owners (or not).

Now, if you happen to find the person that has EXACTLY your same preferences, you might be able to squeeze more out of the deal, but that's rare, so the more typical case is, you have to compensate for the fact that the buyer is probably getting (for example) their second or third choice in finishes, etc, whereas if they bought new themselves, everything would be their first choice.

IMHO.

Just for the heck of it I went and looked at each and every AC classified ad on talkbass. The most interesting thing is the only LM5 for sale was Big Red's bass with a rosewood board.

I couldn't find a single for sale ad that listed an LM5 with a maple board. Adding to that the glowing reviews in the club thread says a lot about how great these basses are...

Yep. Before I placed the order for my LM5 I searched the classifieds just to get an idea of how often they popped up used and couldn't find one thread listing an LM5. I knew I had to order one new because chances are that I wouldn't see one pop up used at all!

I disagree. They are going for whatever the last one went for until the next one is sold.
If one is in the market as a bass seller/merchant, those constraints may apply, but not for a one off.
Ask away leona1, and if your timing is right, you'll do ok...if it sits and you are in a hurry, drop the price to where YOU are comfortable, not what others may suggest to you.

Believe it or not, I do agree with this... essentially saying the market, and the urgency to sell, will determine the actual selling price.

Also, I'd never recommend anyone start right off with the "lower than desired" price. I'm just predicting that's where it'll end up as history actually has shown here several times.

Again, tho, I agree that he should definitely ask what he wishes. Just saying he should also be prepared to get offers for less (and try not to take offense at it) and understand those offers are probably not really low-ball since we've seen some precedents set here.
