I now own Two Allevas and they are in my opinion the best basses I have ever owned.
The Sadowskys, Celinders, Roscoes and GB's were all great great basses do not get me wrong but the Alleva's just work for me in every situation so I paid what I needed to in order to get what I needed :)

I'm not saying those basses aren't worth the money, it's just that I resent paying a big mark-up. If you take the price to be $4ooo, I think that comes to around $4800 with tax, plus shipping ($150?)
I make that around £3000 - a huge mark-up. I think it might be cheaper to fly to Jimmy's and pick one up! Good luck to you on buying one, but I just hate the English system of "pile the low, and sell them dear". I think I'll end up importing a NY Sad, and hopefully paying a bit less than that for it. If i was paul turner, I'd buy one like a shot!

I know what you mean. My wife is English, and 4 of our 7 children were born in England (Bournemouth), the rest in Alaska of course.

I like Sadowsky's as well, but I'm sure Vic and Ken and others would tell you that they can sound quite different.

If a Coppolo is what you think you want, keep an eye out for a used one. You'll wait a little longer -- or maybe not depending on how things go -- but you'll get what you want for a fairer price.

Again, that's not a knock on Sadowskys, I LOVE them too, but if a Coppolo is what you want, you can have it with patience and a little elbow grease I'm sure.

Besides, the exchange rate has been swinging in your favor lately as well. The pound buys more priced as dollars as of late.

Yeah, an AC and a Sadowsky are not going to be the same sound. The AC is going to be a lot more faithful to the original, whereas the Sadowsky has a modern twist to it which gives it its particular mix-cutting magic.

I started off with an LG5 I picked up used in the classifieds a while back. I knew I wanted a 34" scale 5 string that had an approx 10" radius neck and wanted it to be faithful to a early 60s jazz. I live pretty close to the Sadowsky shop and stopped in a few times but while they make great basses it wasn't what I was looking for.

A few months later a KBP5 in nitro with a DB board popped up in the classifieds with my love for the LG5 I jumped at it and it is the best passive 5 string P bass I've ever touched.

I mention all this because when I knew I wanted a 70s spec'd 5 string jazz bass I was very confident that the LM5 would fit the bill both sonically and the feel I preferred in my other AC basses. When I contacted Jimmy I really didn't care where that bass was priced relative to other basses like a NYC Sad I simply knew that is what I wanted.

No Worries, To be honest I don't know what my LG5 would have been if I had bought it in the States, I have a feeling that it may have been closer to $4500 but I can't remember where I read that. Also I have had some ludicrously high shipping costs recently so, again, I can't be exactly sure.
I think its safe to say the dealer is making a decent profit in the UK however :)
As others have said NY Sad's (and Metros) are great great basses but they won't sound of feel like the AC.
If you are near Birmingham ever you are welcome to try mine out and see what you think.
Also consider a US Lakland perhaps as that may get you closer to what you are after possibly than a Sadowsky. I forgot in my previous thread to mention Laklands but the US JO that I had was superb!

More options for you. The white KBP4 Classic is for sale right now. This bass was at Bass Player Live and I was supposed to get it, but got the other one instead.

Call Jimmy and ask him about it.

Thanks all for the advice - the only trouble is that now I've got to start saving up!
They really have gained a fantastic reputation, and from what little I've heard, it's all justified. I'll just have to bite the bullet I suppose. You US residents really have got it made with regard to prices and choice when it comes to instruments!
