I was just in New York last weekend at Jimmy's shop checking on my soon to be born 5 string with black blocks and binding. I believe he is making only four of these at this time. I decided to go with the black finish. I almost went with sunburst because the alder body had a very nice grain to it, but chose black instead. I am getting # 2. Jimmy thinks it should be about 6 more weeks until completion. He also has a few other secrets under his hat that he will unveil at the October bass show in NY and at NAMM in LA. I can only echo all the praise that Jimmy has gotten and say that it is well deserved. He is doing some special things.

Do you know if you can get it without the Sadowsky emblem on the back or front? Don't get me wrong i have nothing against Sadowsky as i have one. But I feel funny carrying the A~C which i use all the time with a Sadowsky Emblem on it.
When I purchased my bass from Jimmy, he had sent the pickup cover that was originally on my bass somewhere to have it copied and produced. None were available at that time (a couple of months ago). I assume he will have some in stock soon (if not already), and that they will be an 'option'.
I mentioned on the other thread that Jimmy sent me a replacement pickguard without the cover holes drilled into it, since I don't use the pickup cover. That was a very nice customer service touch.
Regarding the Sadowsky bag, I don't think there is a 'generic' version. I believe they are Roger's proprietary design. Great bag!
I have a LG-5 being finished up....an INCASE or PORTABAG? what do you guys think?
I'm with Ken on the InCase bags... I strongly prefer the old (yellow writing) InCase Slim as opposed to the newer version. I also feel that the Sadowsky bag is a close second to the old Slim, but beats out the new Slim by a small margin.
I wouldn't say it's designed by Sadowsky.. matter of fact I wouldn't be surprised if they were made by Protec for Sadowsky, since it's basically the same as the Protec Contego Bass case, if you didn't want the Sadowsky badge, you could get the Protec, and save some cash too!

Actually, as I understand it, Roger did in fact have a hand in the design of the Portabag...I own one and I have to say that from what I can tell the Protec you have linked here is nowhere near the design of the Portabag. Just take a look at both and you will see what I mean...The Portabag is the best of it's kind as far as I am concerned. The old Incase design was better than the new one (but not as good as the Sadowsky IMO) because the zipper is better and the overall design of the backpack system was better. As always this is just my opinion.

Honestly, for me it mostly comes down to the neck support strip (moveable via velcro in the older, yellow writing ones). For me, the Slim is the only one I've got and the ability to move that support strip has been great. That's the main thing for me, but additional pockets and a bit different layout of storage makes the older one preferable as well.
The primary difference for me is the very nice, thickly padded, easy to use standard straps on the original model. They were replaced by the very heavy duty 'alpine' type backpack strap system from the DUB bag.
Also, the original had two additional pockets on the outside of the case. I believe they were originally designed to hold the 'hanger hook' and the rather silly 'rain poncho' that came with the original. It just so happens that the small pocket is the exact size of a pack of strings (similar to the Portabag small pocket) and the larger pocket was PERFECT for music... perfect size for, for example, PDF printouts of tunes, etc. I just love it.
That's all minor stuff though.... the main thing is that goofy (IMO) backpack system. I'm sure if I was living in New York, and possibly walking 30 blocks to a gig, it might be cool. It's an overdesigned hassle for me to go from the house to the car, and the car to the gig!
The Portabag is VERY similar to the original Slim. Not quite as heavy duty, but lighter weight with still plenty of protection IME.

of your collection. I am sure you will have another instrument to your liking from Jimmy. With some of your Vintage fenders did you find Jimmy's basses to be similar to sound and feel? Maybe you would like to add some of your impressions and comparisons.

When the bass arrives, I will definitely A/B it with my early Fenders and give my impressions. I've played a few 4 string AC's in the shop and they definitely do have a vintage Fender vibe to them. In particular, I played a passive P-bass and it just felt "handmade" in a very good way. The neck was super comfortable and it played like it had been broken in for 40 years! It's hard to compare the sound with a pre CBS Fender without one there to A/B against, but it did sound great.
